A Thread 4 Fast 4 Furious

By Popular Request!

Here is the thread for the greatest cinematic triumph of the past two decades, the movie series that defies the logic of its own world and ours, the modern American saga of the Toretto family, The Fasts and the Furiouses. Movie news, or simply acclaim, time your NOS correctly and bring it here. You can have any beer you want, as long as it's Corona.

Rank on.

5 > 3, 6 > 1, 4, 7 > 2

Hah! I approve of this thread as much as I approve of the fact that Helen Mirren has asked to do all her own driving in Fast 8.

The cast for the next one is awesome, Mirren, Charlize Theron, Kurt Russell.

The only way Fast 8 could be better is if Judi Dench plays the bad guy.

I demand that the thread image be changed to when Dom is catching Letty in mid-air in Fast Six.

As for ranking:

5, 6, 3, 7, 4, 1, 2

I might need to see 4 again but it's the one I remember least of them all.

I bet Helen Mirren will play Paul Walker's character's mom, who taught him everything he knows.

Kind of slow to get this thread started... 7 movies...

Haven't seen 2 or 4, even though I've read I should skip 2. Might marathon the series soon. Have to know how Luda came into the world.

3 > 7 > 6 > 5 > 1 > 4 > 2 > Turbo-Charged Prelude > Los Bandoleros

Tokyo Drift is the odd duck, but my favourite because it delivers what I thought I wanted from the F&F movies: lots of street racing with JDMs. The stakes are low and the violence minimal, making it a relatively believable street racing movie.

But since Fast 8 is promising a return to street racing, on the back of the insane level the series has hit, plus Mirren, Theron, and new-look Hobbs, it's looking pretty promising. I'll miss the normal-human-being-ness Paul Walker brought to the films, and the interesting homoeroticism, but at least they're bringing more women back in after dumping a few. What's Suki up to? And is there a loop in the F&F space-time continuum that'll let them bring Gisele back to life?

Hey, if they bring back Gisele, Han has to come back too. He's my favorite, damnit!

Helen Mirren will probably be Luke and Jason's mother. Charlize will maybe her child too.
My only link is the British/South African accent.

Although I need to rewatch the first ones, here's my preference of the movies:
5, 6, 3, 1, 7, 2/4 (can't decide on these last two).

The street race at the beginning of 2 is great, and it's a John Singleton movie so if you have two hours to spare then it's worth seeing what he did with the sequel to a low-budget no-name Point Break remake.

[Edit: And it's no less gay than the Dom/Brian movies. I find this all really interesting, but as a straight person I really miss a lot of it until it's pointed out to me.]

4 is pretty forgettable for story and action, but it set the new direction for the series, and it especially emphasizes Dom's love of Brian, so it's important thematically.

They already brought him back! I have to believe that even the F&F universe has its limits... Plus he was properly mourned and avenged. No one except Han really cared when Gisele died.

From this thread I think I need to see these movies.

Based on past performance, I think I'm going like 2 best.

Does a streaming service have them? I don't particularly want to buy the DVDs unless I know I'm going to enjoy them.

Nope. Just checked JustWatch.com over dinner. Only 7 is available on HBO right now. The other 6 are not free /included anywhere. $2.99 a piece to rent from multiple places.

Gosh darn it!

The first six movies are for sale on DVD for $25 on Amazon.

I wonder if there would be a market for a TLDP of movies...

Weird, I watched a most of them on Netflix. Maybe they're only on Canadian Netflix?

Also I think 2 is waaay better than 1 or 4. My ranking from best to worst would probably be 5, 3, 6, 7, 2, 4, 1. Everything about 1 is just awful, and 4 somehow manages to be a complete snoozefest despite all the over-the-top action. The only good thing about 4 is the introduction of Gisele.

Yeah, the first six are on Netflix Canada.

If you want a summary of the series so far just imagine a hand endlessly switching gears while random objects explode and Vin Diesel grunts "FAMILY" over and over in his gravelliest voice.

I'd see that.

The first time I saw the very first Fast and the Furious movie it was a pirated version that somehow came with the dialogue and sounds but without any of the music. It was a surreal experience. I only realized what was happening when there was a scene with speakers showing movement, but no music going. It was fascinating.

A nice compromise to watching 5 and 6 might be the How Did This Get Made podcast. It has Adam Scott guest starring for all the movies as they explain it.

That's no substitute. It's the thing you listen to AFTER watching them.

Absolutely. Don't forget 7!

That video is hilarious!

I'm hoping Helen Mirren is Jason Statham's mom out for revenge.

I actually haven't seen 2, 3 or 4. Without the original cast I didn't see the point of carrying on with the series and wrote it off, then one day I randomly caught 5 on TV and fell in love. Caper movies are one of my favourites so the complete surprise of what the series had become gripped me.

So my ranking is 5>6,7>1

I still haven't seen the first three, but of the one I've seen it's:

5>6>>7>>>>>4.

Still angry they didn't name no. 4 "Fast and Fourious"

I was hoping they'd call the next movie "And 8". I mean the already had Fast Five and Furious 7

Alas, cces, I couldn't find a quality enough pic of that moment. And now to pull from the movie thread:

The Fast and the Furious (2001) is, at this point, a delightful throwback. Movies aren't exactly made this way anymore, with wall-to-wall (bad) music, and people just sort of being. It's so dedicated to simply existing in the world, the truth of Paul Walker isn't revealed until nearly 45 minutes into the movie.

You definitely have to watch it to appreciate where the series grows. And then because it will cause you to cry crocodile tears when you get to the end of 7.

SpacePPoliceman wrote:

I love Tokyo Drift, and do recommend watching in release order because there is a parabolic rise in craziness from 4 to 5 to 6, so slotting in TD is jarring in its low stakes and restraint (an odd thing to say of a movie with a Yakuza drifting duel of honor, but that's what makes this series such a beautiful creature). It's also the one with the purest car chases.

This is a good point, about watching it in order so you aren't confused about it dropping down 1000 notches on the intensity. I amend my earlier statement. I hadn't thought about watching it with fresh eyes and how confused you'd be. And if it hasn't been spoiled for you the end of Fast and Furious 6 will be all the sweeter.

SpacePPoliceman wrote:

Fast & Furious (2009) is...man, I know this is one you're supposed to hate, but I can't, I love it. It's weird and dark and has an all-time great villain death.

It's my second favorite in the series and the companion piece to 5. It's indispensable. This is when they were starting to flex their muscles and realize they could do so much more with the series. It's also when Justin Lin joined on and you can see the difference.

SpacePPoliceman wrote:

Fast Five is one of the best action movies of the decade full stop.

This is an understatement.

SpacePPoliceman wrote:

For me, F&F is infinitely superior to even the Marvel juggernaut. They defy all Hollywood logic and reason, and if there is joy anywhere in your heart, you'll probably find something to love about them. I know better than to make predictions on your likes and dislikes, Clock, you will do you, but you do also seem like you have that requisite joy. It's not the best series to women, however (though, I'd argue...better than Marvel!).

Sorry for chopping up your excellent post but I basically wanted to +1 all these great points. I sincerely believe in this last one above all else. It's my favorite franchise and has been for a while. When I see the news of a new Star Wars, Star Trek or Marvel trailer I'm *far* less excited than when I hear news about a new Fast and Furious movie. That's ridiculous, but it's true.

Thanks kindly, chop away. I'd say in addition to the craziness issue with Tokyo Drift, the characterization of Han in that movie doesn't quite align with the end of 6, obviously. Makes it odd.

I'd read of Dame Helen's dream of being in F&F a year or so ago, and thought it was an amazing dream. Yet, at the same time, the series is so playful, I couldn't imagine it not happening. I'm ecstatic that it is.

+1'ing chopped up post

Man, which thread have I been missing for the F&F discussion? I don't follow any movie threads (except Name That Movie—never forget) since it's not a hobby I'm into as much as others, but I'm always up for talking about F&F.

One correction: Tokyo Drift was Justin Lin's first F&F movie.

Also agreed that F&F series is absolutely my superhero franchise of choice. I think I've mentioned this before, but since I'm here: practical effects, human(-ish) characters, racial diversity, and only one film every two years.

Also also, they weren't crocodile tears at the end of 7! I won't argue that F&F isn't the most ridiculous thing on film right now (though I don't believe it), but they earned that ending. I admit I have a bit of Stockholm syndrome with the characters due to mainlining the series ahead of 7, but even Mrs. Gravey, who is only into it for the Rock, teared up.

I'm ashamed to admit that I forgot what crocodile tears actually meant in the moment I typed that. I thought they meant giant tears. Oops. That's the truth. I legitimately cried at the end of 7. Real, honest, manly tears.
