The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild Catch All

Pages

I just made it through this 56 minute gameplay video and I couldn't help but create a thread. Zelda was getting a bit lost in the discussion about the NX but really this game deserves a thread.

If you have an hour watch this video - it is incredible. If you don't just be aware this game looks incredible.

It got my so hyped for Zelda I started playing Windwaker HD again the other night. It looks really good from the gameplay I've seen so far and I just love the art style.

I watched a tiny part of the livestream stuff and then went "yup. That's probably for me" and decided not to watch any more. I'd rather hold off and go into it knowing as little as possible.
(Would have been even better with a lady Link option grumblegrumblegrumble...)

I never did play Windwaker despite getting the WiiU version as a gift a while back.

I should probably get on that...

I know this game will probably be very divisive with long time fans, but it looks like it is finally the Zelda game for me too. I'm finally stoked about a new Zelda game!

Did they confirm a dual console release? If so, I hope it runs well on the Wii U.

That actually looks amazing! Kinda wish I had a Wii U now....

Skull Bashing Stalchildren with their own Skulls

Burning Hyrule with the Fire Rod

I'm actually avoiding watching anything beyond the initial trailer because I'm going to try to go into this one with as little knowledge or expectations as possible. That benefitted my experience playing Link Between Worlds quite a bit.

To each their own. I love to watch every video I can get my eyes on.

Great videos, thank you farley3k for posting! I watched a good chunk of the first one last night and absolutely cannot wait.

I pre-ordered on Amazon and it lists the release date as Dec 31, 2016 - I know it is just a placeholder but darn I wouldn't complain.

You can craft clothes and dress Link in those clothes, which clearly makes this a superior game.

Nine Cool Moments

From what I've read, all the game footage from E3 was running on the Wii U.

I want this game now and I'm not really happy about having to wait until 2017 just for the NX. Oh well, plenty of other stuff in the back log to keep me busy until then.

That's right. And they're releasing the two simultaneously, not a staggered release like I think they did with Twilight Princess, so there'll be plenty of opportunity to compare the two.

Lack of Lady!Link aside, I am way excited for this game. It looks fantastic, kind of a return to that open-world explor-y feel of the earliest games in the franchise. Suuuuuper hype.

I'll probably buy a NX for this. It's going to be better on it right? I hope.

I could be wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that Ninentdo stated it would be identical on both consoles.

Just checking in because of course I'll buy it. I'm not hyped at all because we're still a ways out, and I've been waiting so long.

They said that players would "have the same experience" on both platforms. My expectation is that the two versions will be identical in content and performance, but they've obviously given themselves a bit of an out to make the NX version prettier or perform better.

I can honestly say I haven't bought a Nintendo console since the 64. I think this game just might be the thing that does it. That and me having two little kids now so maybe I can sell the wife on the need for a more family friendly console.

Yep, does give them some wiggle room. It'll be interesting to see both side by side and compare the differences.

A few tidbits I didn't pickup elsewhere.

Did anyone else notice that the Zelda weapon select would make a ton more sense if you were to map that to a should button scroll wheel like that one (rumored NX) patent? I haven't been keeping up since a freak storm knocked out power here Thursday night until late last night after being out of the office during the days since Wednesday, but I also have not seen anyone mention this at all.

This is the first I've seen anyone suggest that. Interesting idea.

Tagging.

That would explain the horizontal action of the menu for sure. Then again, the entire UI looks bland but functional so it may simply be functional to have it horizontal instead of a wheel or whatever as there looks to be many weapons to choose from. Meaning, there isn't just six or eight that would fit perfectly on a wheel so instead it's a simple scroll bar that would also work perfectly with a shoulder scroll wheel. Two birds one stone?

So, two thoughts as I read/look at more stuff.

(1) The climb motion looks super weird. It looks like something from a game or movie and I can't put my finger on it. It sends my brain in a tizzy every time Link climbs.

(2) Any indication the stamina bar can be leveled up? I kept seeing people climbing up, reaching a safe spot, waiting for stamina to recharge and then start climbing again. That's not a fun game system. I'm all for stamina in combat, but the way climbing and jumping works seems more limiting than interesting.

I heard on one of the Giant Bomb streams that you can cook foods to temporarily increase your stamina, but they weren't sure if you could permanently buff it.

And I disagree about it being inherently un-fun. Open world games often become overwhelming if there aren't any limits on your freedom to start, so building up toward discovering more of the map seems like a fine approach in theory.

This is the most excited I've been for a Zelda game in years. I haven't really gotten into a huge 3D Zelda since Wind Waker. I love that they're trying some really different game mechanics, so the game doesn't feel super predictable, and I look forward to exploring a huge open world in a Zelda game.

I'm glad I have a WiiU for this game. Nintendo has made some amazing games for the WiiU, but I'm not all that fond of the console itself. Not many third party games, very limited storage, and making people re-buy the same virtual console games for the sixth time are just a few reasons. The NX is going to need to really impress me for me to get Nintendo's next system right away. Right now, I'm leaning toward the WiiU Zelda.

The limit to climbing everywhere and everything doesn't need to be a stamina bar though. They've designed all these towers and buildings to be climable with little rest stops on them. If that's the tradeoff for being able to climb at all (which looks like a great addition to the series) no big deal, but I don't personally think it's up to snuff with the elegant ways Nintendo tends to work around things.

Of course we've still only seen a small chunk.
