[movie] The Dark Tower

A search found a thread from 10 years ago about the comics but I thought this might warrant a new thread.

Here's the First Look at Idris Elba as the Gunslinger in The Dark Tower

The first photos of Idris Elba on the South African set of The Dark Tower have leaked, and they look great. Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) is directing the much-anticipated Stephen King adaptation, which stars Elba as the gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey as the man in black.

*edited to get the series right.

Well, I am seeing this movie.

I am not sure if Matthew McConaughey is playing the man in black or is the man in black

Is this movie just covering the first book? Or is it somehow trying to do all of them? If it's just the first, it's got a lot of potential. I'm just confused because they keep calling it "The Dark Tower".

Roland never had a cell phone. This movie looks garbage. /s

I had no idea they started shooting. Very cool. One of those projects I thought would bounce around and never get made.

Since Eddie and Susannah haven't been cast, it's only The Gungslinger. I was actually kind of hoping they would combine the first two books for the first movie.

Actually those are just shots of Elba walking around Texas and/or Florida.

There are all sorts of weird casting announcements, though, for characters who are decidedly not in the first novel. They're also from novels after the last one I read (4), so I don't know if they're flashback people, or what, but rumors are flying that this may turn out weird.

The Man In Black fled across the desert, and the Gunslinger requested an Uber to follow.

Cry your pardon, swipe left, thankee sai.

From Stephen King's Twitter.

The Dark Tower is close, now. The Crimson King awaits. Soon Roland will raise the Horn of Eld. And blow.

And another tid bit

For those of you thinking He Who Must Not Be Named will be playing the Crimson King in THE DARK TOWER...good guess, but wrong.

I read the Dark Tower right as the 3rd book came out. King is the original George R.R. Martin, he put the series on the shelf and I don't know when he picked it up again as I had lost interest.

Still, I'm all in if they can make a decent adaptation on the book. They had a wide range of actors that could have played the gunslinger so they'd have had to work very hard to screw it up.

I find Idris Elba extremely watchable, it's still a weird role if I recall from the books. The Gunslinger was almost supernaturally good, not necessarily a straight up cowboy. I mean, no weirder than dressing up as an Asgardian bridgekeeper so it's got to be a step up.

i also saw that King said this will NOT be a direct adaptation which I feel is good. It has been so long since I read the books but it may be too incoherent for a movie.

Here's the thing - the way the books are set up, it doesn't have to be a faithful adaptation to still 100% fit into canon.

Spoiler:

Yea, the image above, "Last Time Around" could imply that this is less an adaptation and more a continuation.

If that's what they're going for, it's f*cking brilliant. It gives you the established world but allows you to go off the original narrative, be canon and try new things (like bring back old Gunslinger buddies back to life).

I really need to keep expectations in check, this is, after all, Sony Pictures we're talking about...

I think I'm gonna be a whole lot happier with Idris Elba as my mental image of Roland than my current bastardized Clint Eastwood...

From Elba's twitter

I am Roland, son of Steven, son of Henry, true descendant of Arthur. And I have not forgotten. #TheDarkTowerMovie

Not sure what to think about MRC as a production company.
Searching for them, I came across their Wikipedia page.

Trailer tomorrow.

And in current hollywood fashion here are some teaser tweets about the trailer we will get tomorrow.

And there it is.

Seems an odd trailer, like the first half reminded me of a YA movie adaptation, while the second half showed off a little more of the ruin and weirdness of Mid-World. Lots of elements of both The Gunslinger and The Waste Lands. I'll definitely be watching this, but I'm not fully sold on it yet, especially Matthew McConaughey's portrayal of the Man in Black.

I'm super excited for this but also super afraid. I want to reread the books but in doing so I'll probably nitpick the movie a lot more.

Yeah, I have been rereading the series again and have many mixed feelings about the trailer.

Spoiler:

The only way I see this working is as a continuation of the story. He better have the Horn of Eld with him or there will be many upset fans of the books.

So it looks like Roland reloads like Rushuna from Grenadier. I'm assuming he also keeps spare ammo in his bountiful cleavage.

This is exactly what they're doing. One of the posters for the movie shows the Horn of Eld.

I don't know anything about this series and I am not a fan of King even a little bit.

That said the choice to use the song that the watch played in For a Few Dollars More grabbed my attention so hard that I am actually interested in checking this out. How strange.

Debating if I should go on blackout or not for this. It has really helped with the last two Star Wars. So fun to watch and nothing ruined.

Ohhhh, man, I was trying to figure out where I remembered it from.

If this is the case I'm more on board. I barely saw anything recognizable from the books in the trailer.

I did like the little easter egg of the picture of the Stanley Hotel from The Shining in the doctor's office when it started shaking.
