Factorio

Video – Factorio & Conversation

Section:

Despite not writing as many opinion pieces of late, I assure you the problem is not that I've run out of opinions.

One of my problems with Let's Play videos has always been that I only have so much capacity for hearing someone think about how they're playing a game out loud. So, in the spirit of those two ideas, I've been trying a little bit of an experiment. I've started a new Let's Play series called Factorio & Conversation.

The idea is this, I'll play Factorio and cover what's happening in the game as interesting (to me) things come up. But, mostly it's an excuse to cover some topic I'm interested in. Think of it as a mini-podcast where instead of watching my face make shapes that help words come out of my mouth, you're watching a cool game.

If you're interested – and, with the way I've really sold it here, how couldn't you be? – here are some links to a few videos I've worked up.

Topic – Disney drops out of gaming

Topic – Bethesda decides not to provide review copies of Doom

Topic – Early Access Games

If you have a topic you'd like me to cover, let me know in the comments ... god, I sound like such a YouTuber.

At least our comments are better than YouTube's comments!

This is the most grudging 'like' I've given so far. I hope you're proud of yourself.

Playing Factorio and uttering cohesive thoughts at the same time is quite an impressive feat.
Early access:
It's actually pretty ironic that you discuss early access while playing a game that seems so much different from most other early access games. Factorio has been in a very playable state for quite some time before it hit early access, so if you bought Factorio now, you would have a more satisfying experience than buying a game like Spacebase DF-9 which was in early access before release, but that still feels so clunky that it behaves like an okayish early access game at best.

I'm generally not the biggest fan of early access and as you've covered the main arguments against it in the video, I won't repeat those here. But, all in all, there are some types of games that make much more sense in early access than others:

Sandbox games like Factorio, Kerbal or Besiege are good examples, because a lot is left to your own imagination and there is not a lot of scripting that has to be done by the developers. In these cases, I even think that early access is the best way for programmers to iron out mistakes. How are they supposed to know beforehand what kind of conveyor belt shenanigans you come up with next?

On the other hand, there are games that don't make much sense being in early access - either because of the game genres themselves or because of the experiences that are offered. For example, from what I've seen so far, the early access version of Torment: Tides of Numenera (rpgs with a lot of dialogue don't seem to be a good idea for an early access game) is more like a glorified demo than something that is really offering players a way to stress test a game, because you can only play the first area of that game. I'm not paying 45€ for a demo of a game that I'm actually really interested in and then, when the final release hits the shelves, I might have to go through the same area again, because by then they have changed so much that my save file won't be usable anymore. If they had said: "Hey, pay us ten bucks now and at final release you only have to pay 35€ instead of 45€ if you like what you see," I would have been perfectly fine with it. But if I pay full price, I actually want to have full price access... (Factorio's demo - that I took roughly 5 hours out of - is for free, by the way)

Great idea! Reminds me of one of my favorite background-listening series: John Green playing FIFA.
