Civilization VI

Give Stars in Shadow a try. Doesn't overcomplicate things, fairly good AI, and you can jump right in and start playing.

This! Stars in Shadow is great.

I'll also throw in an endorsement for Stars in Shadow, and add Interstellar Space as another good MOO2 clone

What about Endless Legends?

I love Endless Legend. A mashup of several game styles plus the addition of Dust, a sort of universal resource currency that allows game options beyond the usual resources. It's a very clever system and in my mind marks the first real shot at mixing the Civ lineage games with Age of Wonders and some additional bits. Great lore too.

Amplitude Studio also brought us Humankind, recently, so that is worth checking out too.

Just wanted to give a heads up that Civ 6 Platinum (all dlc) is on sale for $16 on the playstation store until 4/26. Got it for some couch conquering.

I'm new to this forum, and haven't played as much Civ VI as earlier versions. Would someone be willing to play a kind of "tutorial" game with me, to teach me some ropes?

Are there Civ IV and V fora?

Civ Fanatics and Apolyton were the big Civ forums for 4 and 5, they're both still around.

So most of the online ‘help’ these days has basically shifted from forums to YouTuber streamers doing series on how to play the game.

PotatoMcWhiskey is one of the best - admittedly in my opinion - at Civ VI and explain what he’s doing. His editor is also very good at what he (I think) does, so you get very informative videos that McWhiskey is very good in explaining what he is doing and why. He got me from being a Prince level player to an Emperor level player - that’s a big leap for me.

This is on of the ‘Overexplained’ series he did a couple of years back. It covers the New Frontier pass and you can easily find stuff for the New Leaders pack.

Adding to this, I picked back up on Civ VI a few months ago, absolutely loving the whole experience.

PotatoMcWhiskey has a list of recommended UI mods and over time I've installed probably 80% of them; "Extended Policy Cards" should be standard in the game, as well as the "Simple UI Adjustments". Incredible quality of life improvements:

Anyone know why it won't let me install it on either my Samsung Galaxy S22 or Galaxy Tab 8 but it will on my POS Amazon Fire tablet?

Support for Samsung devices was dropped. Some incompatibility or bug issue.

Android is a mess.

uhhg. I read that clearing the play services cache allowed you to downlad unsupported apps and that actually worked. Played a bit then purchased it, for a trip, only to find out later it requires internet. What a terrible developer move. The whole thing is a mess.

Just spoke to Sid at a local Yakitori restaurant in northern Maryland. His wife asked me how I knew it was him.

It’s Sid!!!

I should have asked when Civ 7 was coming out.

Isn't he retired yet?

He seems like the sort of guy who still enjoys tinkering with software, even if he's rarely attached to anything that releases these days. And he's too much of an industry luminary for 2k to force him out.

I've lived in NYC for a quarter century and I haven't had a celebrity sighting like that! Of course, I'd fanboy over Ed Beach as well.

My wife and I actually went to Firaxicon almost 10 years ago. I got a photo with him and got him to autograph a copy of Civ 4.

On our way out, the owner of the restaurant asked me what he did that was special. I said: "do you know Civilization?" His eyes lit up and ran back to where Sid was seated.

I was there too! At 2 Firaxicons. I think there were only 3. Might even still have some swag from there...

Civilization VII announcement has leaked via the 2K website. It’s all been taken down but I suspect there’ll be something more official in the coming days.

Edit: Possibly coming hours. Sounds like Civfanatics have been all over this and they were expecting the official announcement in about 8 hours time. Looks like someone at 2K accidentally jumped the gun.

As long as it runs well on the Steam Deck!

It's been quite a while since I played Civ 6. Steam says i have 190 hours in it, which is probably rookie numbers for a lot of folks here, but I did really enjoy it. Sadly I'm not sure I ever spent any time with the second expansion. Maybe I should fire up a new game as a sort of farewell before moving on to Civ 7.

Take your time. Firaxis’s track record with both Civ V and VI has very much been a case of ‘requires improvement’ on initial release.

I might break the habit of a lifetime for this one and wait a while after release too see what state it’s in.

Who am I kidding. I’ll be pre-ordering along with the rest of the lemmings

Definitely buying on release (outside of some horror scenario of it being a mobile live service game).
But I would also bet money on the standard "it will be good with the second expansion".

I'm a Firaxis fan. I typically buy their games on release. Just to support the studio and Sid. I met Sid at a restaurant a couple months ago.

Even the messes that were Civs V and VI on release gave me ~20 hours of enjoyment before I realized that enough stuff didn't work that I'd have to wait and pick it back up again later.

Anyway -- IIRC the last several Civ releases have been ~6 months between reveal and release, so I'm looking forward to playing this one later this year.

Yeah Civ isn't something I'm desperate to get into on Day 1.

I'll absolutely be playing it at some point, tho. Haven't missed a Civ since i got into PC gaming.

.... Or at least so i thought.... apparently there was a Civ Revolution 2? Who knew?

Hype train is real. I'll set up a new thread
