How long in does it take to get the ability for coop?
Depends on how quickly you can beat the first boss. The White Sign Soapstone can be bought from the vendor found after you enter
the hub area.
I'm surprised at how positive I feel going into this game. I actually have faith that I will finish it!
I think I'm just gonna unsub from the thread for a few weeks. Catch y'all in a while!
Just a heads up, if you kill someone by knocking them off of a ledge and think they were supposed to drop something, you can exit and load back in and it should be where they spawn. I found this out early on for reasons
Some weird slowdown on the PC when graphic boxes pop up when you loot something
Runs super smooth on my old CPU and last gen video card, much better than previous games. I am however experiencing crashing around bonfires, especially if I approach one instead of respawn. Hope there is a patch soon, as its a real progress killer.
Got three hours in. One was playing directly on the computer, the last two and change were via the Link. No problems to report. Game self-set everything to high. I left it there, it looks dandy and runs between 40 and 55fps, which is good enough for me.
So far, so good. I'm still getting my legs under me. Haven't found a 100% damage block shield yet, and having only 4 flasks means some runs are...shorter.
That "THRUMBBB" when you first enter an area. Welcome to Dark Souls.
EDIT: I beat the first boss (after several attempts)I was down to a sliver of health. Whew.
I'm playing on the PS4, and it seems fine so far. I have seen some bloodstains, but when I touch them I don't see anything. I remember the same thing happened in Bloodborne when it launched.

Love it! That sound makes me so happy!
I love that you can hear the level up lady chanting in the background whIle you make your choices. Nice touch.
Got through the first boss, nearly on my first try. I like the new mechanic for dual wielding, makes a lot of sense to me.
Tomorrow, I think I'm going to go through the first boss with a couple of different builds, see what I like.
Hmmm... I have an i7-2600k (old but still great if I believe what I read) and a GTX970. I have to put everything on low to get 60fps at 1080p. That doesn't seem right.
No crashes though and the game is playable. Beat the first Boss, that crystal creature, and I cant beat Uchigatana guy.
I engaged in some jolly cooperation in the first main area. I was summoned pretty quick the two times I put down my sign. Nice way to explore the first area.
For pre-ordering the PS4 version, I also got the DS3 soundtrack. Just to let you know, it shows screenshots of the game as it plays, so if you are spoiler-adverse, keep that in mind.
Dyni wrote:My crashes started at the first bonfire, so hopefully you'll be fine.
of all people, not you Dyni! I wish I could swap rigs with you and let you play!
Love you too, bud
Thankfully, I think I figured out how to work around the crashes for now, as I played for two hours straight after my last one. Setting lighting to Low eliminated my crashing for an hour, then it started again because for some reason, the graphics settings all reset to defaults after a crash or exiting without saving. I figured this out after a couple more tries, put the lighting back on low and haven't crashed again since. It's working well enough to tide me over until a patch at least.
I made it far enough in to kill three bosses and meet an old friend. I started Deprived, so the beginning was pretty tough. Finding my first 100% physical block shield was a big help.
I'm going for a stat-free damage build, which means I'm only putting enough points into str/dex to meet minimum weapon requirements and relying on fire (or maybe lightning) infused weapons for damage. This frees up all of the points I would otherwise be putting in damage stats and allows me to pump up my health, stamina, and equip load instead.
Whaaaaaaaat! (Hub spoilers)
Andre the Blacksmith? Firelink Shrine? Old lady firekeeper from DS2! I'M SO CONFUSED!
Pretty neat so far though
Even though I'm getting that same amibient wind cutoff problem mentioned up-thread.
The plank shield that a deprived starts with seems to have a weird lunging rush that gets me killed instead of a normal parry- is this different for each shield or did they just decide that parrying wasn't finicky enough already?
In the stats for shields, they list an ability or something. A bunch of them specifically say "parry", but some have something different. Maybe the plank shield is one?
Man, staying up til 1am playing games is something I'm totally too old for now.

Those are the arts at work. Read the item descriptions, different items have different arts.
I am finding the PS4 to be a bit more comfortable so far. There is something weirdly sped-up feeling about the 60 FPS on the PC. Having finished Bloodborne my timing is just geared towards 30 FPS, I suppose. I'm also getting less weird stuttering and sound issues on the PS4. PC looks sharper and the lighting is better but performance seems herky-jerky. For example I get random stutters when I pick up an item. Ambient sound loops are constantly cutting out and restarting. Quitting and starting the game on PC is annoying. The frame rate dips on PS4 are more significant but have been less disruptive to gameplay.
(And yes, I have both PC and PS4 versions... long story).
I was getting constant crashes at the first bonfire (760 gpu) and turned my lighting settings to low and haven't had an issue since (although I've only played about an hour). If anyone else is having issues try that. I literally crashed everytime I lit that first bonfire 6 times in a row, lighting fixed it right away.
Graphics still look good with lighting on low as well but I hope this gets fixed by the weekend.
When do you get combat arts or do you have them from the start and just have to figure it out? (answer in spoilers)
RooksGambit (vague, and not really a spoiler):
Every weapon/shield has its own skill. Examine the item description for more information.
Rooks:
Pretty sure there was a tutorial message about it. If I remember (I haven't actually tried it myself): you two-hand your weapon, then it's LT. If you hit LT with a shield equipped, it does whatever the ability of the shield is, frequently parry. I assume it's the same for off-hand weapons.
Stuff for some early enemies, but after the tutorial boss:
So, those guys that transform into big corruption demons, huh? I can't figure out how to deal with them, other than running in and taking them out before they transform. Once they're demons, they just murder me. Makes that run in pretty damn exciting, I tell you what.
I had a random crash to desktop on the PC this morning..and the stutter and slowdown is fairly consistent when you pick up an item for some reason. And arggghhhhh no 21:9 widescreen support so that means probably no multi-monitor support either.

Yeaaahh.... just gonna go PS4 for now. You be you, FROM.
Was playing the ps4 version last night, and I had no stuttering or lag.
So the ps4 version is capped at 30 fps? Wasn't the ps4 version of Scholar of First Sin 60fps?

Bloodborne was 30FPS too. Being built for the prior platforms, the geometry and lighting in SotFS is far less complex so it could get to 60.
Tagging so as not to go hollow
The Steam Controller looks like the best way to play Dark Souls III
Now that Dark Souls III is out in the wild on Steam, Valve has released an official configuration setting for the Steam Controller to help you praise the sun in style. Now, I'm not the biggest fan of the controller -- unlike some writers around here (Hi Joe!) -- but this just looks like the best way to play. Not only can you easily navigate menus, you can also quickly spin around as if you were using a mouse. Who needs skills when you can just buy the Steam Controller? Luckily it is being offered in a price-reduced bundle with the game on Steam so if you've been thinking about buying one, now would be a good time.
It looks like Dark Souls III managed to sneak in an easy mode. ;)
