Dark Souls III Catch-All 2.0

Today is a good day to die! Welcome to the Dark Souls III catch-all. Please use spoiler tags for plot(?) points, areas and bosses with some vague nod toward what your spoiler may contain. Good luck!

Hurrah for vagaries!

First boss is interesting... I've died a few times!

Spoiler:

Kinda wish I could upgrade or something, I feel like my estoc wielding assassin with no upgrades is struggling a bit. I'm totally two-handing my estoc and bouncing around naked. Got him down to 1 hit worth of life and died.

General hot tip for folks since I know even some reviewers missed this basic new feature: every weapon can use focus points (the blue mana bar) and has a special move set for it. Hold the weapon two-handed, hold left trigger and then attack with the usual right trigger/right bumper. You should see the blue bar go down when you do.

Two minutes in I already encountered an odd an annoying bug. If I stop moving for a second or go into menus and navigate, the ambient sound stops for a moment then 'ramps up' from the beginning of the sound loop again. So if I stop for a moment then take a step the wind sound starts over again. It is extremely distracting.

I'm really enjoying the visuals, always been impressed at how the Souls game builds worlds. I chose a Cleric and so far it's been pretty easy going. I'm still not sure how a splat of blood shoots out of an undead hit by a mace

Anyone on PC getting frame rate dips? I'm getting 60 fps most times, then suddenly the FPS will drop to the teens for a second or two.

Twitter seems to be telling me that there are crashing issues on all versions of the game. Can someone who plays the PS4 version post about it by, say, 5pm eastern tomorrow?

Well, just in case, I tried launching DS3 on PS4. No dice. Midnight Eastern.

What a terribly handled game launch. Japan gets it three weeks early. The game leaks on Xbox One due to an obvious region exploit. Steam users get the game six hours earlier than console users. I know a lot of Redditors objected to streamers getting the game several weeks early, too, particularly since so much of the game experience is about exploration.

I've read that this may be the last Souls game published by Namco Bandai. Hopefully some of these issues will be handled better in the future.

That whole controversy really made me feel like shaking my cane at the young folk, and I don't even feel very old. Let me tell you all about how much I wanted to play Final Fantasy V and how long I had to wait to do so...

I'm seeing very slight stuttering every once in a while. Not at all frequent, though.

I had a really unstable framerate when I first started the game, but a reboot completely fixed it. It'd only been six or so hours since I last rebooted, too.

I'm crashing a ton on PC I might have to shelve it until they get a patch out. It's barely playable for me right now.

21 hours clocked and zero crashes for me so far. That sucks, Dyni! Got all your drivers and junk updated?

"Frame rate detected is insufficient for online play, reverting to offline mode."

Uh-oh.

Hmmm, so any chance anyone playing this on Xbox One? Anyone? Does it run decent or horrible?

My limited impression and I have to stop until tomorrow. I beat the intro! I AM A GOD AHHHAHAHAHA. I died quite a few times first though.

I need to quit the game and do some other things. Let's see here...

Start
Scroll over 3 buttons
Menu
Scroll to last tab
Quit
Are you sure?
yes
Logo
Press any button to start
Connecting to server...
Scroll down 4 options
Quit

It's not a souls game without challenges is it?

Quit the game and come back in after you create your character. I hit that every time I made a new one.

Speaking of "uh oh" I had my first crash after the new release patch.

Rooks, yeah that is pretty insane.
Civ V had a save and quit game one button from the game itself.

(non native) Steam players in Japan are having real issues getting the game going, seems only the Japanese Ui is available if you have your Steam language set to japanese, if not the game won't download. Wonder if it's just a Snafu by FROM or somehow Namco own the rights to the english UI and therefor FROM can't release the game in English in Japan.

I played 3 hours with no crashes or stuttering. Fingers crossed, this continues for me.

Beat the intro, found some interesting weapons and chose the starting gift

Spoiler:

drake ember? Fire sword is ok, upgraded it once or twice so far. Also found a dark axe, which seems fun.

I'll be playing on Xbox One. I haven't heard too much about it, but the Giant Bomb quick look of the PS4 seemed to run nicely so I'm hoping for similar performance. They also mentioned that the load times aren't too bad, which was a big concern for me.

I thought about switching to PC but my processor is a FX-6100 and they recommend a 6300 at minimum. Plus I have all of the achievements for the first two games, so I have to round out the trilogy, right?!

Runs fine..recent patches did a ton to smooth out the frame rate dips.

Yeah, that was the first stuff I checked. I checked reddit quickly to see if others were having problems and found this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/darksouls3/...

It seems like almost everyone posting there has an NVidia 760, 770, or 780. I have a 770, so at least I know that it's a common issue.

I took someone's suggestion in that thread of turning the lighting down to low. That worked for about an hour, but it just crashed on me again now.

FWIW I am running a 670 .. so far no issues.

I have a 780 so that doesn't bode well for me either. Hopefully they get that patched quick. Thankfully no crashes yet but I'm not super far into it either, I got to the next area after you can level up for the first time...so maybe 40 minutes in.

My crashes started at the first bonfire, so hopefully you'll be fine.

Tagging thread.

Will report on PS4 performance post tomorrow. Fingers crossed...

Well, this later release for consoles compared to PC did have the fringe benefit of giving me time to finish our taxes, fold laundry with Sigsbee, and in a moment, watch Castle with her. I guess it's a good idea to begin the new Age of Dark with some good will stored up.

of all people, not you Dyni! I wish I could swap rigs with you and let you play!

I was wondering why steam kept notifying me you were playing DS3. So far no crashes for me running an amd 390x but I do get the odd dips in frame rate into the lower 50's at weird times but for the most part i have been running a solid 60.

Do I have to buy some of the stones they normally give you in the previous games like the one for leaving messages and the one for coop?

Soapstone needs to be bought, yep (the vendor is where you level up). Writing messages is done from the menu, second option from the right.

One thing I didn't notice at first is that you can now charge heavy attacks by holding R2. It costs more stamina, but (appropriately) does more damage. You can charge the follow-up, too.

There was probably a tutorial message that said this, but I definitely missed it.
