Titanfall 2 Catch-All

Titanfall 2 - Titans with Personality - Preview

The original Titanfall was a lot better when I came to it. They had added co-op play by then which meant you could level by playing fun relaxing co-op rounds rather than the more intense multiplayer. I loved the multiplayer but it was nice, when I wasn't in the mood, to just shoot AI enemies. I suspect I'd have stopped playing earlier without the co-op.

Theres some sort of Beta for consoles starting today I think...

TITANFALL 2 Single-Player Tutorial Mission Gameplay - Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Tech Test

I am so ready for single player Titanfall!

EDIT: Jebus! Watching someone play this game with a gamepad is painful. Is that what it's like playing FPS games with a gamepad? Cause that's awful!

It's a 'technical test' COMPLETELY different. It's this weekend and another weekend later on. You can sign up here.

Some multiplayer game play:

The Respawn and Titanfall twitter accounts are pooping out test access codes.

In a way that bots/scripts could easily harvest them. I am irrationally annoyed by this.

I am very excited for this game and will be playing it for many hours.

Amen to that! Will you be subjecting yourself to the Xbox version? Or are we finally going to be able to play something together?

Watch me fumble through my first Titanfall 2 game:

I'm in the PS4 beta and I'm terrible at FPS games using a controller.

I've very annoyed that they didnt learn their lesson with the PC last round or just completely said f*ck it and dont care. The fact that the tech tests are on console only makes me think the latter.

Hmmmm, the tech test isn't up in the UK yet on PS4. I do hope it's just a time zone thing and not a 'Didn't we mention it was only in the US?' thing.

Embrace the imprecision

I employ the age old tactic of walking my bullets onto the target. Just sometimes I take the long way around.

Edit: The beta is now up in the UK. Interestingly it was being described as a 'Technical Test' yesterday and you had to sign up to it. Today it's an open beta type affair that you can just download. Perhaps a sign that they weren't getting the interest they needed to do a proper test.

I saw ads saying it would open up for everyone on the 19th as early as Tuesday.

Ah ok. Clearly I have dodgy news sources .

I've played a few rounds. My very, very early impressions are that the maps aren't as expansive or as clearly divided into areas as those in the original Titanfall. They seem smaller and more confused. The Titans take a long time to start showing up in the current game modes and there are only a few at a time. I play the game for pilot on Titan or Titan on Titan action so having to fight as pilots for the first half of the match is a bit of a turn off (I know you had to do that for a little while in the first game but this seems to take longer.) Maybe everyone, including me, will get to the Titans faster as we improve. The Titanfall metre doesn't fill up over time anymore. It fills up on kills and objectives completed which I'm not a fan off. Somehow it feels more like work and makes the game that little bit more frustrating to play.

Great! I love being a pilot!

I only played one map so these are very quick impressions but I also noticed the longer time between Titans.

I'd also say that the map I was on didn't feel like it had any kind of flow. It was just a big chaotic mess with nothing in its design to encourage area control or steer player movement.

The first game had at least a couple maps like that while the others all generally had some meaningful design work put into their layout, so hopefully the map I played on is an exception. I'll try to get some more time in this evening and see if all that holds.

Wow. This went from a day one purchase to a wait for a sale on Origin when it's 20 or 30. Complete opposite of the first one.

I only played one match of hardpoint, but only one person got out a Titan. In the first one I was getting around 3 on average. I liked in the first one how your Titan was on a timer, and getting grunt and player kills would just speed up the process. I know its a tech test, but I didn't see any AI at all.

I'll second the lackluster map design. In the first one I was jumping and wallrunning all over the place. In Homestead there weren't even really many places to wallrun. It kind of just felt like a Call of Duty map.

I used to never be a keyboard and mouse snob, but holly hell. How could console people stand playing the first game. I really hope they release a beta for the PC.

Yeah, not the way to suck me back in. I think last time I got most of my fun out of the game during the beta, then didn't find much more to hold me in the game once retail came out.

I could download it on Xbox, but I know that's not the way I'd play it long term, so can't decide if I should even bother.

It feels like they are de-emphasising the Titans so they become a bonus for good performance and trying to move the game in more of a Call of Duty direction or at least emphaisie it's Call of Duty elements (which seems crazy when you have giant mechs as a USP.) I'd rather they gave you Titans more often. Even starting you in a Titan (not sure why you wouldn't start a mission in a Titan in a real military encounter where you'd had time to prepare.)

You do start to get more Titans showing up when people have figured out how to get them but, for me, the difference between a progressing timer to your next Titanfall and earning a Titan purely from kills, etc is vast. It feels like you are a pilot who occasionally gets a Titan rather than a game where everyone is regularly getting Titans and fighting with them.

The maps don't seem to suit the Titans as much as they do the pilots. There are a few openish areas but the spaces between some buildings can feel cramped.

If you are used to playing with a controller Titanfall one was fantastic. I can see that, if you are used to the laser precision of moving a mouse onto a target and firing the controller could feel horribly imprecise. The saving grace of that is that, on console, everyone is in the same boat (which is why I'm not sure about the Xbox one allowing mouse and keyboard and console players to mix. I don't want to have to use a mouse and keyboard to be competitive.)

Just opened up Origin to play the tech-test build for myself and see about all those changes for the worse they seem to have made, but apparently it's only available on consoles? What the hell.

I dont think we know this yet. This is just the modes they gave us to test and they're different from TF1. PvP is the only one that is a hold over.

The TTK seems to have been shortened. I havent unlocked the shotgun yet, but the CAR and even the pistol are laser beams of death.

Just made a GWJ network for the PS4 Tech Test. Message me here or on PSN (DemiurgeGWJ) if you want to join.

They don't want people to datamine the game before it releases so... no PC test yet.

You're right. It could be a false impression made by these game modes or even a beta set up to emphasis pilot game play in order to draw some players in when the actual game doesn't have this leaning away from Titans.

Also, to be fair, other people might love the changes but they don't suit me personally (including the shorter time to kill that I noticed as well.)

Got on this morning and played ten or so rounds, and . . . meh. I loved Titanfall; it was one of those silly games that was essentially built around getting a few crazy moments a match. You'd fly into a room and take out three people or drop your titan down onto somebody else or make a mad dash to the extraction and do a nuke-eject of your titan to take out some enemies while landing in the escape ship. it didn't have depth, but it was just insanely fun?

Titanfall 2 so far has shown me:
- It's a lot harder to get a Titan in the first place; it takes forever for one to come down.
- Ridiculously quick death; a few bullets kill your pilot. I had this happen at the start of an extraction, and got to spend a good full minute watching other people play. You die FAST in this game.
- Muddy, grainy environments where I can't really tell everything going on. It's like someone put a muddy filter over the game world where everything bleeds together into various shades of brown or tan. The first game was a bit cartoony, but it was very crisp and I could easily keep track of everything on the battlefield. Now, it's way more difficult to see what the hell is happening.
- Movement just feels more janky and sluggish. I like the idea of the grappling hook, but it's a slow enough process where it's really not that helpful. The first game was incredibly fluid and movement was very intuitive, and it just doesn't seem as crisp.

I really like the Bounty Hunt mode; it's a neat idea to have to kill enemies to make money, and then deposit money between rounds. That being said, I'm so far pretty darn disappointed in Titanfall 2. When the beta comes around, I'll give it another shot, but it really does feel like they took the unique character of the first game (the great parkour elements of movement plus lots of giant stompy death robots) and turned it into just another shooter.

Meh.

Wow. Given that the original Titanfall was one of my favorite multiplayer experiences, this seemed like it would be an easy sell for me. But, no, this seems to be CoD multiplayer with titans as a kill streak reward. I'm...just confused about how they misstepped so much. The only thing this test has done is make me want to play the first one again.

Wow, I really hope they change things around. I enjoyed the hell out of playing the first one with you, Dan, and think we enjoyed it for the same reasons. Your negative impressions really make me pause.

I was actually thinking I needed to just throw the first Titanfall on for a couple matches, just so I could nail down exactly what the differences between the two are that bother me so much. It really feels very, very different, and, from a gameplay perspective, the first Titanfall was just great. It lacked depth, customization, or really long legs because there wasn't really anything outside of frenetic combat, but it was not a game that needed fundamental restructuring from the ground up. Some story and some ways to actually earn rewards that allowed you to feel like you were really making your experience more unique is what it needed; it did not need whatever the hell it has become.

I always enjoy playing games with you for the five minutes it takes you to complete all the achievements before you run off to some other game.

Spoiler:

Because SallyNasty is a dirty, dirty Achievement whore.

I would say download the tech demo and try it out; I'll likely Female Doggo and moan a bit over on the Respawn forums, but the level of changes they seem to have made are not the kind of things that could be tweaked between now and release day. They really changed the game a lot, and I don't like the direction they've gone.

They patched Amped CP map where you get the titan faster. By the time you get 500 defense points you have 60% toward the titan with no kills. I suspect 2 kills on defense will also give you the titan. It used to take 4.
