Salt and Sanctuary Catch-All

I was really happy with this except for the Pitchwoods area. The platforming there was pretty poor, but it was much easier on the second go around so I guess that's something.

That part sucked.. its a semi-optional area so thats at least something.. on my Mage playthrough though I will have to do the second part of those platforms which looks to be the suck.

I was very angry on my blind play through as a 0 magic character to get to the end of the second part you speak of to find out there was 0 gain from it.

Spoiler:

Well you get an achievement for joining the creed that you find up there, which is important if you dont plan on playing it more than once.

So took out the Kraeken Dragon and wrapping up the optional bosses.. the Forgotten Kings wasn't too bad (got them on my second try) but Murdiella Mal can bite me.. another almost insta kill mechanic boss.

Ah only just noticed there was a thread for this. Just finished up NG on a mage build while I was recuperating from surgery.

Overall I enjoyed the game and it certainly scratched the itch left once I'd gathered all the DS3 achievements.

I think I would have enjoyed my time with it more if the graphics were a touch brighter and more lively it was all a bit drab to look at. I would also have really, really appreciated a mini map of some description as I spent a bit too long backtracking looking for half remembered things. Also the game balance seems a little quirky, the opening of the game with a mage seemed really tough but by the end my build was completely imbalanced, I'm not sure if any of the final 4 or 5 bosses caused me any problems.

A definite recommendation for anyone who liked the Souls games or likes a fairly challenging and well put together platformer.

Much as I liked it I doubt I'll be back for NG+ or to gather the last handful of achievements.

I never did finish this. Should go back.

I Just started this about a week ago and I really have been enjoying it. Great art style, measured combat, and it definitely nails the Dark Souls "regular enemies will kill you in seconds if you are being lazy/not paying attention" vibe.

I've been playing a nearly pure-mage build (with a little bit of cleric tossed in there), and the beginning was definitely rough. The Mad Alchemist killed me 43 times before I finally took him down.

Now, though, my greatest irritation are the damn saltbats - they seem to be highly resistant to magic, so it takes me forever to take them out if one materializes after a death. It's worse if they are in a boss area - I'd say at least 15 of my 32 deaths to the Tree of Men were because a damn salt bat kept interrupting my attacks.

I also love the amount of lore that's packed into the game - every item, every skill node has some sort of world-building exposition attached to it, and it's a breath of fresh air. It definitely makes the rather dull skill tree a lot more interesting, having the chance to learn tidbits about the world as you progress your skills.

Am I a bad person for waiting for this to go on sale on the PS4? I'll buy at full price if the promised Vita version. Sounds like a good game.

So I picked this up at release for the PS4 and bounced off it hard. Wanted to like it, but something just didn't work for me.

Earlier this week I was searching Steam for games with native 21:9 support and noticed this was on the list. Figured I'd give it another shot. It really clicked this time and I'm loving it. I think maybe the big monitor right in front of me is making it easier for me to see what's going on and dodge/parry attacks, which I had significant difficulty with on the PS4 with a smaller TV far away.

Anyway, up to level 40 and just vanquished the Tree of Man (lost a lot of salt to that fight) and having a blast!

Wow, some of these bosses are difficult. This definitely feels very much like a Souls game in spirit, but it isn't grabbing me like a Souls game does. While the exploration feels like a Souls game - finding locked doors that you can open up to provide short cuts once you make it far enough around to unlock them, the 2D just doesn't inspire the Wow that DS does.

I beat The Sodden Knight and the Queen of Smiles within a couple tries or so each, but the Alchemist is a bastard. The Cyclops doesn't seem like it will be crazy hard, but if may take several tries.

Not sure how much I'll continue. It just doesn't feel as intuitive as DS or as satisfying. I think it may be one of those games I can appreciate for what it does and how it captured the essence of DS, but I don't think I'll enjoy it long term. I've played it for 3 hours.

^ I was digging it, however a lot of that goodwill was based on the amazing amount of what it packs in from a small indie dev (I've heard it's, what, two people? Haven't verified). I sort of lost interest after the aforementioned tree of man. There was some dragon I killed just before or after that then I sort of shelved it. I think my magic build had gotten a bit OP.

Anyone pick up the vita release? Impressions?
I haven't bought this game yet but thinking about.
It. The lack of discussion about this game might suggest it's not very good?

Incorrect, this game is awesome.

The game is great, but Jason at Giantbomb said the Vita version has serious performance issues. If you can overlook that, I'd recommend it.

I've been playing the Vita version and it can certainly get framey at times if theres a good deal of action on the screen.. but so far its a decent port of a fantastic game. Well worth picking it up if you havent yet. It's a perfect handheld game.

Agreed, I haven't seen any ludicrous slowdowns, game's been fairly responsive so far.

Good to hear. This will make a great travel game in the summer.

I might have to find my Vita.

This game for Vita is absolutely fantastic! As stated before there are times when it slows down, but it never effects the experience in my opinion. To put it into perspective, I found Xcom on Vita completely unplayable due to its framerate. This? Perfectly fine.

If aa 2D, Darksouls type game is your thing, then you'll enjoy this.

Limited Run Games will be doing physical releases of this tomorrow. Both PS4 & Vita, in both "normal" and "collector's edition" configurations; the latter includes a soundtrack CD, poster, and map. First batch at 10 AM EST; second batch at 6pm EST.
