Monster Hunter Generations (Ultimate) (3DS/Switch) Catch-all

Did a bit of fashion hunting, myself

Full Astalos gear and Astalos Heavy bowgun. Probably not the best set for gunning, but the chain crit ability seems useful for pierce rounds (multiple hits going through long monsters should trigger the extra affinity). And hell, it just looks cool.

Much of the HBG intricacies remain a mystery to me, but I'm getting the hang of consistently shooting the monster in the face so there's that.

Welcome to Fashion Hunter!

For some reason your image isn't appearing for me. I didn't even realise there was one until I quoted you. I manually followed the link though and that's awesome! Puts my Robin Hood get-up to shame!

Congratulations on consistently hitting the monsters... I'm still working on that. I have a great 30sec clip that starts with me doing a nice combo just behind a monster and ends with me hitting Cat in the face with my shield while they held an explosive barrel over their head...

The barrel exploded.

I will echo the feeling that his was like coming home after playin MH World.

My approach this time was to use hints I never used before, so I’m mainig Insect Glaive and seconding Heavy Bow Gun. It’s fun learning new weapons!

I've been having a great time as an Adept Charge Blade user. Definitely took a couple of days to get the hang of it but now I'm (mostly) comfortable. Just got into the 3 star quests. It's probably time to upgrade my starting armor. What I really want is evasion, but it looks like I can't get that at this point without a lucky Charm. (Logambi suit is only +9, and I can't make a jewel yet). With that off the table I think I'll go for a Hermitaur set, if that ends up being too hard to farm in my starter gear I'll make a Battle set instead.

What are the rest of you wearing at the end of 2/beginning of 3 stars?

Edit: I thought about Rhenoplos for the stronger Impact Phial hits, but it's just too hideous, I can't bear it. The worst part is the Gauntlets. Three metal graspers instead of a glove? WTH? Hmm, although those don't add artillery, so I don't really need them...

I'm wearing Rheno armour, and it's alright. I'm also wearing the Edel set for gunning, for no reason than it makes my hunter look like a flower.

BuJaBuJaBu for me right now. Attack Up L from the outset is pretty hard to pass up

I tried Daimyo Hermitaur once and had to bow out after two deaths. I could probably "git gud" at him by playing a bit more carefully and learning his moves a bit better (like, you know, you're supposed to) but instead I decided that it was time for me to have more than 20 defense. I'm definitely failing Fashion Souls right now. Rheno helmet and boots. Acorn chestplate because it finishes off the artillery with a tad more defense. With my artillery requirements met I grabbed the devil frog gloves and pants for the highest armor pieces I had the ability to immediately make.

I'm pretty hideous now, but with a bit more impact damage on my phials, and I believe north of 3x the defense, I'm probably ready for Daimyo Hermitaur now. Depending on how things go with the rest of the 3 star quests I may make the crab armor, or wait for Nicca, because that set looks nice indeed.

Hermitaur's are harder because of how they move and attack - so don't feel too bad! Don't forget to upgrade the armor pieces at the smith when you have the spheres and mats for it - that will help.

The problem usually is how wide the back shell is, and causing bounces because of it. Coming in at an angle from the front and attacking the legs is a good bet - you should be able to see the side swipes, water cannon, and be far enough away to back off when it pulls the claws in for defense or moves. Then it's a matter of outlasting and getting in hits.

In other news - I'm back at Village 4* and starting to crank through Hub 1 quests. Trying to get up to HR this week. Guild Hunting Horn, Alchemy SnS and Gunlance (still trying to decide on the style). BuJaBuJaBu is doing work (like usual).

Yeah, it's weird. I wouldn't consider Daimyo Hermitaur one of the tougher monsters in the game, but every once in a while, it will destroy me. The way it moves is so spastic and unpredictable. Even after fighting dozens of Hermitaurs, there is still an occasional fight where I just can't seem to hit the damn thing.

I'm enjoying hanging out in this thread. You all know so much about the game. Meanwhile I'm just combining random items to see what happens...

...

Did you know that you can make Paintballs?

Even those of us that have been playing this series for hundreds of hours are still learning. There's so much to learn. I still know nothing beyond the basics of dual blading or bow gunning, for instance.

Wait until you figure out what a Slickaxe does hehe.

I'm that way with anything other than the Hunting Horn. The golf swing (A -> A) and slams (forward X, X+A) with the Self Improvement song usually makes short work of it, and even then it will get in a couple of good hits and I'll cart.

Cephaladrome, Nibelsnarf and Pleisoth can all go die - I still have problems with all of them, every single damn time I have to hunt them. I've never been able to get those hunts to under 40 minutes, and I'll often double cart.

I just made the Rhenoplos Armour. I look ridiculous...but I feel strong.

That's dark magic right there!

I'm seeing the appeal of these games. It feels like there's a massive amount of content here. I could actually see this being a great game for someone who has their one or two franchises that they buy every year.

Those three just aren't any fun. Aerial Switch Axe alleviated a lot of that pain and suffering for me, especially Nibelsnarf.

Pumpkin Armor 4ever!

Yonder have you upgraded your armor? or is it still Level 1? I handled Hermitaur with my Rheno armor pretty well.

I upgraded my starter armor to level 2. My new mismatch set is all still level 1, we'll see how I do against the crab (didn't get a chance to try last night). At this point if I'm having trouble I'll definitely fork over a couple spheres for some upgrades, especially now that I am starting to mine them semi-regularly. I always keep my weapon up to date, but I only upgrade my armor "as needed".

This is a total noob question... But how do you decide between upgrading armour/weapons and just holding off to make new ones?

I dont start upgrading until I start running into monsters that give me trouble, or if there is a set that comes available with skills that will unlock or be useful.

Most of the time is cosmetic for me especially on LR.

So I always increase weapons if I can, I want to dish out as much damage as I can. When I have a decision to make I look at the trees to see if the highest thing I can make in one branch does more damage than the highest in another branch.

As far as armor goes I play until I'm struggling. If things are frequently hitting me for over 1/3 health with pretty "normal" hits, or if their big hits are much above 1/2 health that usually means I'm starting to struggle. (Although later on in the game that will become more normal even if you aren't over-equipped, depending on your build). When I start struggling, like right not, I look at the armor sets I can make at the time. Right now I can make a couple of Rarity 2 pieces, and basically any Rarity 1 piece. Since my old armor didn't have a skill I'm super attached to (and my current one doesn't either) with such a defense boost from making a new set there is no reason to upgrade my old stuff.

As it is when I next start struggling if I can make Nicca armor I will. If not I'll probably upgrade this stuff. Although... an all crab set will look a lot better than what I'm wearing right now, so if I start to struggle I may just switch to that and upgrade that.

Also you can take some Adamant Pill and Armorskin potion to help be tougher. The effects also stack so you can take a Adamant pill, Armorskin potion and mega Armorskin potion for extra hardening. And carry an Armor charm around with you. It helps if you don't want to sink a bunch of armor spheres into an armor set you aren't 100% on. Although really, at low rank it really doesn't matter what you make, it will be useless come High rank and you'll need to make something else anyway.

Right now I'm finding that better armour sets are becoming available regularly enough so I should stick with that pattern...but if new sets aren't becoming available and I'm struggling I should upgrade? That makes sense!

I just faced, and defeated, my first Cephadrome. Hated every minute of it. Turns out I'm a tiny bit weirded our by sharks that swim through the ground! Unfortunately it's armour set is better than my current one and it looks cool too so I might have to face it again...

Does anyone (athros ) have any more tips for a beginner in the early stages of the game? Anything along the lines of the Buja armor, like a nice SnS that I could probably get if I knew to try? I'm thinking I might aim for the Hidden Edge SnS, I don't think I'm too far from being able to craft it.

I'll put my current set in spoilers for reference. I'm open to suggestions!

Spoiler:

I mainly use the Cephalos Set, all Lvl 2. So my Def. is 111 and I also have Heat Cancel. I don't have Cold Surge, because I equipped a Cold Res Jwl 1. Most importantly, this armour set looks great. With this, I use a Bone Tabar Lvl 2. so the Attack is 120.

I also have the Bujabujabu Armour, and at Lvl 2. that works out at 79 Def and 140 Attack.

Like I said, a short-medium term goal could be to get the Hidden Edge SnS. Attack is a little lower than my Tabar but it has green sharpness and 40% affinity instead of just yellow and -5%. And it looks ~25% more badass.

I think a good beginner tip is to aim for SnS that have elemental qualities to their attacks. Because you attack quickly, the extra elemental damage really adds up. It does require some research to know what element to use on what monster (and making a few sets) though.

That's good to know, I think that at its current level my Tabar can actually become a slightly weaker poison elemental SnS. I'm happy to make duplicates of weapons to go down different branches too. Maybe I'll spend some time looking at what elementals I have access to instead of mainly just looking at Attack.

Try to make the Serpent Bite -> Hydra Bite or Bone Tabor -> Poison Axe. Poison is ridiculously good in MHGU, especially for the early game. You'll need Velicoprey and Velicodrome kills to get Serpents Bite up to Level 2, and then Ioprey, Iodrome and some breaks on Tetsucabra for Paddock Oil to transition to Hydra's Bite. Bone Tabor needs bone (shocking) and Gypceros parts. I'm rocking the Hydra's Bite right now as I'm getting more and more used to Alchemy SnS (SPIV is nuts in groups. Seriously). I'm currently hunting for Remobra Heads to upgrade it. 80 and Green, so it's not the best that I have right now.

With SnS, and most quick weapons (DB, Lance in some cases), Elemental is really good since every hit you're pumping in the Elemental Damage on top of Raw. For slower weapons, Raw tends to win as it's not as many hits and thus less elemental/status damage (Unless Hammer/HH, because Exhaust and KO are really good with the right sets and then to add more status on top of that? Yeah, good times.).

aspect wrote:

That is very true, but utilizing elemental damage (water, fire, etc.) well means you need to know what element each monster is weak to AND what points on their body are weak. I would call it more of an intermediate to advanced tip for that reason alone. Also, focusing on elemental damage as you level will greatly extend the amount of farming you'll have to do to make the various elemental weapons.

As a beginner, you should focus on high raw damage and sharpness or damage status (poison and blast). As Athros mentioned, poison is incredibly useful against almost every monster, and the SnS is great at quickly applying it. Blast damage will be the same. It's much easier to maintain and upgrade one poison or blast weapon than 4 different elemental weapons. Save that for the end game unless you're up for farming a lot of extra materials.

So based on the helpful advice I've gotten here and on discord, I've made myself a Frost Edge and a Poison Axe. I pretty much had everything I needed for them both anyway, so it wasn't too much work. Next up is a Hidden Edge for Raw and Affinity. I don't think I've too much work to do to get that.

For Blast I'm thinking Dios Edge, but I think I've a bit to do before I can get that.
