If you are planning to play multiplayer, hopping in voice chat with a veteran or two early on will help you learn more quickly than anything else. If you aren't planning on using voice chat at all, that's fine too.

This should be your primary video resource: https://www.youtube.com/c/gaijinhunt...

Use his weapon tutorials to help your decide on a weapon, or use them to learn how to properly use a weapon if you've already decided.

He has also written many useful articles about the game, but many are hard to find or outdated. I'll link to a few relevant ones here.

If you don't want to watch the whole video on a weapon, here are links to his weapon guides from 4U. These will translate almost perfectly to the guild-style from Generations with a few exceptions: http://gaijinhunter.tumblr.com/post/...

These are probably better left until you've played the game for a bit, but if you want to start a deep dive right off the bat, here are articles that explain the complexities of the combat system, damage, and status calculations: http://gaijinhunter.tumblr.com/post/...

I'm cross posting my hype gif whether you like it or not!

Well, since I was successful teaming up with ya'll on MH4U, I'll toss my name in the hunter list. I suspect I'll probably only be available to play like once or twice with everyone

Doesn't mean I'm any less hype though. Let's go collect some materials! Mine those rocks! Oh, and I guess fight crazy big monsters.

Count me in as well! I probably won't play online often though (I only have 80 hours on the clock in MH4U, and I expect 75 of those were played offline).

We will love playing online, and we will do it copiously.

Honestly, there's not much of a single player story, it's really geared around hunting and more hunting. And cats.

I'll be playing, of course.

If I wind up getting it, it'll be 100% for offline play. I managed to get a good 80 hours out of MH4 entirely offline. The question I have to ask myself is whether I should drop another $40 on the new one, and that'll come down to how much is new about this vs 4.

Basically everything, including the combat model.

I won't be getting this. My little bleeding heart can't take it. But I'm super glad this is getting localized and didn't wait for the inevitable second edition.

Each weapon type now has 4 (I think 4?) hunter styles which change up the attack animations.

You can play as the cats.

I'm in.

The best description that I can come up with, based on what I've seen, is basically that Generations is Bloodbourne to traditional Monster Hunter's Dark Souls(DOWN THE BOTTLE EVERYONE).

The new arts and styles seem to make combat a lot faster and flashier.

If you want to look up more info, the Monster Hunter wikia has a ton of info from the Japanese release:

http://monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/...

Shut up, cube.

I can back it up! I swear!

Look at the hunting styles:

http://monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/...

Each one changes something about how you play, from the risk/reward of timing your rolls right(Adept/Bushido style), to adding additional movement options(Aerial), to just giving a lot more abilities(Striker), a lot has changed. You can play the Guild style, which is basically the same as a regular MH, only with 2 of the new arts... but why would you?

The hunter arts also change a lot of the standard risk/reward options you'd normally make while in a fight.

Seriously. I know I won't like this. I know they didn't change (and won't change) the things that bothered me in the other games. But calling this the Bloodborne of Monster Hunter makes me want to play it SO. BAD.

The new styles sounds interesting, but I'm not sure it sells me. I only ever really used one weapon in my 80 hours with MH4, so there were, what, 13 others that I never touched? Adding more options just means there'll be more content for me to ignore.

For me at least, Monster Hunter provides a ton of options, but then makes it kind of hard to really explore all of them. Like, there's a lot of types of weapons. Learning each one takes some doing. Then, if you find a new one you like, you need to go gather bits to make one that's decent at your level. It's not a really simple process. I have some built-in resistance to learning new things when the thing I know works perfectly well, so that doesn't help. I'd be more interested in them completely re-doing the early game solo content.

Despite all that, I might still jump. It'll likely be $32 through Amazon Prime, and I did sink 80 hours into 4, which is a lot of time for me. And I gotta use that Circle Pad Pro for something, right?

I'm in for sure.

This time I want to try and not get caught up so much in the single player. I get the sense I missed out on a lot by not playing multiplayer, particularly early on when the folks here were all in groups. It's hard to get in later, when everyone has a certain expectation of gear/skill/knowledge (not that I lacked those, it's just I wasn't sure what was needed).

I do wish they would improve the crafting UI though. Something as simple as being able to tag ingredients I need, then have them highlighted on the hunts, would be a huge help.

After swearing off MH after tri (and 1000+ hours each on MH and MHFU), I may be back in for this. Have they cleaned up the monster hitboxes much or are they still just as bad?

Try not to be scared off with that kind of thought even if you do get behind. Those of us near the endgame were happy to hunt with players that weren't as far along. There were quite a few hunts we would just crush for lower rank players, or we would put on lower rank gear to keep things interesting.

The beauty of Monster Hunter is that the actual playing of the game is incredibly fun, so going back to do lower level hunts isn't a chore like it would be in other games.

Interesting video from Gaijinhunter highlighting the new features of MHG:

Day one purchase (on eShop) confirmed!

Edit: I might even be tempted to buy a copy of it in Japan if I see it cheap enough when I'm there........

Dammit. Sold.

Day One over here!

As for my weapons of choice:

Hunting Horn/Hammer/Charge Blade

Haha! I never did get into the Charge Blade and ended up not using a hammer very much outside of the Ham of Hams for chuckles. I ended up being more HH/SnS/Swax with dabblings of Great Sword and Lance on the side.

With the introduction of styles I'll not be surprised if I end up noncommittal to any particular weapon. With that said, I'm very intrigued by Aerial and Adept.

As yourself this: Is there a more satisfying way to beat monsters than with a monkey holding cymbals? Of course not. Hunting horn all the way.

I rest my case.

I don't think it's available in the other games, but I find it hard to beat MHFU's corn gunlance.

You do make a compelling argument.

Maybe hard to beat, but not hard to top: with butter!

What was wrong with the hitboxes? Seemed fine to me in Tri, 3U, and 4U.

I can't believe I'm days late jumping back into this thread after the announcement!

Very excited for Generations. Given all I haven't completed in MH4U (and 3U) I don't really need it, but with all the new features available I can't imagine spending time on an older version without checking this out.

I think so too, except for that damn Plesioth/Cephadrome hip check.

I learned a few new things about MH today. They aren't specific to MHX, as far as I know, but a couple together were essentially epiphanic. I always wondered how they got this nice effect where no matter what weapon you were using, if you dropped to a particular sharpness level you would start bouncing off specific parts of certain monsters.

1. An attack will bounce if it hits a part that takes less than 25% of the attack's damage.

2. The sharpness modifier doesn't directly increase the amount of damage each attack does, it indirectly increases damage by reducing the damage reduction on the part your hitting--which also leads to not bouncing in many cases.

Very simple. I should have realized this ages ago. Credit to gaijinhunter for the specifics, although I'm sure many others have mentioned it as well.

I can't wait to get some lance, long sword, bow, hunting horn and of course good old charge blade action on with the new hunting styles. I should finally get around to gunning online.

It's unlikely, but I really wish they'd translate and bring over the fantastic MH guidebooks a lot this info likely stems from. I hope Capcom recognizes what guys like gaijinhunter do for the understanding and popularity of the game in other territories.

The hitbox for that move is roughly the entire zone, though.

That would be dreamy. Oh, the poring I would do!
