Clash Royale Catch-All

I'm sorry that I used the word "drivel". That was a bit too aggressive. I was probably feeling a bit salty when I posted that. I would take it back if I could, but since I can't, I will dig myself in deeper. XB

I do feel that CR is pay to win, and that Hearthstone is not pay to win. I will link to two articles that support my opinion.

The World's Best 'Clash Royale' Player Has Spent $12K On The Game

This is an article about a Rank 1 Legend Hearthstone player who has "never spent money on the game". Keep in mind that Rank 1 Legend is the absolute highest rank you can achieve in Hearthstone.

My friend watched a guy on Twitch last night or the night before who was level 6 with lower level cards than I have who was winning easily at the 2200 trophy level. Skill still matters a ton.

And, yeah, serious cherry picking. Lots of high ranked people who spend tons of money in Hearthstone.

To be fair, I'm slightly guilty of cherry picking with the CR article, but the Hearthstone article is iron clad.

Please keep in mind that I'm posting this with my tongue planted firmly in my cheek. Just because I like Hearthstone better doesn't mean that CR is a crappy game. I had lots of fun playing CR with you fine people. And I'm sorry for implying that CR is drivel.

My point in linking those two articles was to illustrate that with Hearthstone it IS possible to reach the highest rank without spending any money. I seriously doubt that the same is true for CR, which I feel defines CR as "pay to win". I would love to see an article about a person who is so good at CR that they became the top player without spending any money. I don't think it's possible.

But I still think that CR is a fun game. I just feel that CR's monetization structure is very preditory.

It is absolutely pay to win, but that only really matters at the absolute highest trophy counts. Anyone that spends a ton of money on the game is going to auto-win their way up into the 3000+ trophy range, so you'll never have to see them. At worst, you'll be a rare casualty on their upward climb. It looks like I've played close to 600 games at this point, and I've maybe seen 10 of those players (even managed to beat one).

It also doesn't mean much if you can accept that playing at higher trophy counts does not equate to having more fun with the game. I'm not too sure where this mentality comes from. I've made it as high as 2153 trophies now, but I'm not having more fun than I did at 1200 trophies. I'm just fighting players that are some combination of higher level, higher card levels, or more skilled.

I'm not arguing that the CR payment model isn't bad compared to something like Hearthstone. A model like that would make me much more likely to toss them some money, but sadly, that isn't what's here. What is here is a fantastic multiplayer strategy game that has hooked me harder than any mobile game since Hero Academy, so I'm willing put up with a bit of F2P bullsh*t.

If you can accept CR on its own terms and be ok with not being a top rank player, there is much fun to be had.

Thank you, Dyni. I feel that you've summed it up perfectly.

I would like to respectfully bow out of this conversation now.

No worries. We are all amongst good people here

(Except if you use the balloon, then you are human debris)

Worse: mortar decks.

Such. A. Pain. They're the new ABD (Annoying Building Deck).

I am experimenting with a new deck. So far, not so great lol

They see me balloonin'
They hatin'

I don't mind balloon decks, they have some elegance and need finesse. Hyper defensive hut/tower spammers though....HATE!!!

Floatin dirty

The only thing that really annoys me right now is the Bomb Tower. It's not necessarily OP or anything, but it just slows the game down like crazy.

I think the bomb tower is OP. It's a cornerstone of my deck and key to turning the elixir advantage to my favor. By itself it can hard-counter 2-3 spawner buildings at once. It has enough range to cover both lanes. And then, it's the building with the most health (in A4 anyways), so it distracts princes and hog riders for longer than anything else.

I'll be sad when it gets the nerf bat.

Yeah, I think bomb tower, mortar, and freeze are likely to get nerfed in the near future. Bomb tower needs a health or duration nerf. It's just way too tanky for lasting 60 seconds. I personally hate inferno tower because it seems to be the hardest counter to my deck, but it only has a 40 second duration, so it's at least possible to work around it. Bomb tower lasts too long.

I have swapped out my hog rider for a musketeer. My play and my deck were doing pretty well but every game I lost, it was because people would just stick buildings f-in everywhere and the HR would veer off from more than half the map to go there instead of the tower. His job was to be a guided tower missile while people were all concerned about my balloon. It wasn't working.

My balloon is a little better, so I'll keep her for now.

I think I've finally tired of this game. It is starting to feel like a chore to play the games versus being fun. If you want to kick me out of the clan to make room that is fine. If you don't need the room, I'll still be grabbing my free chests and donating cards, just to have the desire to play any matches.

My current deck is:

Arrows
Rocket
Spear Goblins
Musketeer
Baby Dragon
Barbarians
Minion Horde
Cannon

It's by far the most consistent deck I've played. Granted, that's partially because I've played it the most, but it's been consistent from the get-go. I get a lot of draws, but my losses are almost always due to panic/misplacement.

I still hate wizards. A LOT.

Just when I was about to give up on this game because I went from 1250 trophies to 920, I go and win 10 games in a row and get back to where I was.

I am enjoying the more defensive style desk where I sit back and react to what the opponent does. I think Tesla is my favorite card.

I can't stop playing it's getting unhealthy!

I like attacking too much. So I do get suckered in at times. Just don't like the waiting game. But it is a valid strategy and it seems highly effective

Agree on the bomb tower. So boring.

If you purely need tower damage, have you tried Rocket or Lightning? Just don't get in the habit of using it when you shouldn't so folks like me strike immediately after that.

Mmmm I need a wizard

I haven't, my balloon remains in my deck but I don't know for how much longer.

If I'm up against someone that doesn't have buildings, no problem. That's a win, I got it. If they have buildings and aren't morons? I'm playing for a draw and hoping to see a mistake where I can snipe a tower with a minion swarm or something.

The musketeer has helped a lot with that. If I can get her behind even my valkyrie, I can take a good chunk off the tower by playing them as a counter and letting them march.

But with the bomb tower lasting for a minute... I don't know, it seems silly not to have it in my deck. a single one of those can take out any ground units short of an epic or a giant and at less cost. So at that point I need to spend my limited air resources to kill it, putting me at the mercy of, well, everything. It's a tough problem to solve.

The big upside of the balloon is that if my opponent overspends, balloon about a second back from the bridge, then rage, it hits the rage, goes faster, and that tower is down in seconds. But if I can't get that scenario to hit, I'm just wasting that elixir as the bomb the balloon drops won't even kill a goblin from full.

I've thought about rockets or lightning, I even got rocket to level 5 today. But... I'm hesitant to pull the trigger. In all fairness, it's less risk than the balloon. I cast, it does damage. Rather than the balloon which I cast, and then hope.

I figured out what is that I hate so much about the freeze/rider combo. It requires much more elegance to play around then it does to play. I'm not saying that it requires no skill to figure out when to drop the freeze, but it requires much more skill to make sure that you're always in a position to play around it. I can't think of any other card combination that feels as cheesy or as cheap or as simple to do.

This channel has incredibly informative videos for Clash Royale strategies. Here is a recent one on spawner decks. I highly encourage you to check out the others they've made if you like it.

Had my fun with the game. Moving on again

Ooo... Nasty strategy that I heard in a Molt video; use multiple cards that normally draw arrows (typically minion horde and skellie army, and sometimes goblin barrel). Play one, draw the arrow, drop a second one, profit. Long term good or not, it's mighty fun.

EDIT: my current lower cost deck:
Arrows
Zap
Hog Rider
Spear Goblins
Musketeer
Bomb Tower
Skellie Army
Minion Horde

Yup, if my opponent has arrows I'll save my Witch for after them. If they won't come out, I use my minions. Nothing magical about it. The next version is if my opponent has three musketeers, I won't use my fireball unless they're out.

How many goodjers are in GWJ2? There were at least 12 people who didn't donate cards in GWJ1 last week, I'm willing to bet they all dropped out without saying anything.

Come Saturday, I'd like to boot them and welcome in GWJ2 people if they want to come over.
