Factorio

I'm watching and greatly enjoying this one! I have resisted the temptation to import blueprints from others, though. I get so much pleasure from making my own (lesser) designs for everything. Watching KoS build her stuff is sufficiently spoilery/inspirational.

I've watched a bunch of the episodes, then last night I was reminded of why I stopped playing. Time vanishes when I play this. Oh, oops, it's 4 in the morning.

Sure, sure, it's 4am, but think of all you've achieved... and there's still so much to do!

And how it would all be so much more efficient if you just start over!

KoS is hosting a multiplayer event this weekend.

I'd have to get up at 4am, but it's tempting...

Have started a new game of factorio. Just a little bit each day or else it seems impossible. Been using blueprints a lot more. With a mega bus design. So the sheer size of my base is much better this time. Up to gray/blue science.

Only bad bit is that there is nearly no oil near me or uranium. Depleted the uranium trying to get my seed started.

Also started messing with robots more. Got roboports just so they can lay all the concrete for me in my base.

Great fun.

I stalled in my last game, built a new copper smelter which consisted of 250 electric smelter, and this is separate from my circuit plant which had their own smelters. I was playing a marathon game (my standard). I'm going to dive into Bob's mods for my next game for a bit, then try to finally build a spaceship.

Bob's mods are fun but it adds a ton of complexity.... thats pretty much what we Factorio players go for though, so its all good

Bots are so fun, especially the associated achievements. I used some circuit wires to automatically dump more robots into the roboport off my assembly line if the numbers of idle robot workers gets too low. Learned that from KatherineOfSky.

So much satisfaction in designing something that tessellates properly. Just tell your bots “make more of that” and it starts working.

0.16 is out on the experimental branch! Changelog here.

The three big new features are the logistic buffer chest, the artillery wagon and stationary artillery, and cliffs. Along with these are a whole host of more minor changes, which I haven't had the chance to play with yet. By and large, they all sound good.

Bear in mind that this is an experimental update, so back up your saves if you decide to opt-in.

I haven't put it in practice, yet. But this Robot Frame setup is pretty nice.

Artillery is exciting, I knew about the wagons but having stationary artillery is a great addition!

I am now officially a Lazy Bastard and can thus start a new game with delicious 0.16 world-gen. Delightful!

I'm not a fan of the cliffs.

I'm looking forward to trying them out. Thankfully, the new world-gen is super-configurable (and can be previewed(!)), so cliffs are entirely optional. I figure they are like biters: an optional wrinkle on the core gameplay for those who want the grief/distraction/challenge they represent.

Congrats! That is an impressive achievement. Just launching a rocket is one of my 2018 goals.

Thanks! You’ll get your rocket.

The holiday season jumbled everything up and I never did start that new game...

0.16 is now stable. This has been a great update, and if you've been holding off on the experimental version, you're in for a good time. The current plan is for 0.17 to be the release candidate for 1.0, which will be a great milestone.

The other big news is that the price of the game will be going up, from $20 to $30. If you want the game and don't have it, now is your last chance to get it at the lower price. They also have a strict policy of never putting the game on sale, so that $30 price should remain the price forever.

Looks like it's time to buy. Ta.

Anytime is a good time to start your Cracktorio habit. Warn your family, they won't be seeing you for a while.

Also, don't bother with the campaign. Unless it's received serious updates it's more like puzzle scenarios. The real fun is in the sandbox.

I'll probably finally jump in too now that it's close to release.

Any specific youtube-y tutorials I should watch before jumping in?

Thanks, think I remember when played a bit of the demo it was mentioned. Straight to sandbox, will do.

It's a long time ago but I vaguely remember the campaign helping me get up and running when I started out. Or rather, I recall there being one or two very short and helpful scenarios, which were followed by a really large, long one that wasn't worth the effort.

Might have changed though. You might find it helpful to, say, spend your first fifteen minutes looking at the campaign or scenario bits to see if they help, and then jumping in to a random map.

I started with the campaign and it seems to be doing a good job of introducing me to the mechanics of the game. This game is so complicated, I can't imagine just diving right into a sandbox game with no clue how anything works.

Personally, I think there's a lot of fun to be had by going in cold. You'll make terrible things but you'll have a wonderful time. Then, later, you'll truly appreciate the efficiency of the designs you see online, and the proficiency of the people who design them.

All of Katherine of Sky's Factorio stuff is wonderful. This series is a major release behind, but the beginning is mostly the same.

So much! If you are going to hit up Factorio videos, Katherine of Sky is brilliant and charming.

I finished the 1st (tutorial) campaign. Then, I started a new sandbox game and holy shit is there a lot of stuff that's not in the tutorial! Like, for instance, A TECH TREE. No sign of that in the tut.

I was overwhelmed.

I may fire up the next campaign to see if that helps me ease in rather than just jumping into sandbox like you maniacs suggest.
