General VR Catch-All

Awww crap. IGN put up a video about GT7 with PSVR2. I'm gonna have to get one plus a racing wheel.

As someone who's been sim racing in VR for several years, let me tell you, it's fricking sublime, man.

The eye-tracking on PSVR2 looks like a big improvement for VR, but other than that it doesn't seem to bring much new? The games are mostly existing titles and I'm not seeing anything that makes me want to upgrade from my Quest + PC setup...Exciting, but also a little disheartening that after all these years VR is still mostly the same, with relatively few new ideas.

In other news, The Light Brigade is looking fantastic. Nothing groundbreaking, but a very solid rogue-like shooter if you're into that sort of thing. I'm eagerly awaiting release day.

The PSVR2 display makes my Quest 2 jealous. But, um, tether free PC VR for the win.

The struggle is real. Fitness face interface and sweat wicking skull caps are required equipment for VR in my house.

Yup. I'm cosplaying as a highwayman when my sabers are being beat.

It's a real problem! There are times when I simply can't play VR because my house gets too hot. It's stifling having the headset on sometimes.

I've considered one of these airflow adapters but Don't want to take a gamble yet because it's a decent chunk of cash.

I firmly believe there's a gap in the market for a lightweight fitness-centric headset that doesn't require all of the light-blocking immersion interface stuff. I LOVE VR fitness, but I always feel like a wet, sweaty mess minutes into any moderate activity.

Something in the XR market perhaps. Where it overlays reality with extra stuff. The "glasses" in that market are barely bigger than sunglasses but they also don't have to fit all the VR hardware in anywhere. Some are using a neck mounted band for a processing module wired to the glasses but still not full VR hardware. None of those would work for physical activity yet but maybe a model specifically designed for it, with all the straps and so on necessary to stay put, comes along.

I'm watching the XR market mostly because I want a head mounted screen I can watch movies on and connect to my Steam Deck for a "bigger" display anywhere I am. I've stared at the buy button for the Viture glasses a few times.

The Switch Ring Fit has the advantage that you don't have to wear anything on your head. You can if you want to, but you don't have to That thing basically went into permanent storage the moment I tried VR fitness tho. Ring Fit is little more than a fitness video and an accessory...but I wouldn't discount the effectiveness of something a lot less complex than VR if they found a way to make it fun. VR fitness gets my time because I'm doing something fun that just happens to also be exercise.

Quest 2 and Pro prices have dropped. Pro dropped by 33%. More rumors about Quest 3. Namely Quest 3 being half as bulky but twice as powerful as Quest 2. Also a Quest Ventura that is even more slimmed down and lower priced.

Looks awesome!

The hand tracking and onboard diopter adjustment have me very interested, but I don't use my existing G2 enough to justify the purchase.

I'd love it if other headsets adapted onboard diopter adjustment too. That's quite the killer feature those those of us with glasses.

For some of us. If you fall outside the range that the XR supports, full stop you can't use it.

And, of course, if you have astigmatism, like I do, you're still going to need some additional corrective eyewear.

Note that the Vive Elite XR headset is $1100

I picked up Ultrawings 2, on the Quest 2, but am totally baffled by the reviews. The flight stick seems totally unresponsive and always veers in one direction, or the other, compared to the WWII flight game I recently bought. To add to that you go back to the mission selection screen after every crash and have to do a couple unnecessary physical VR movements to just replay a mission (laser point to, and select, the mission then put on your helmet). I get the feeling I'm either missing something obvious or this is just another mediocre game where flaws are all dismissed because it's VR?

Yeah i don't have that issue with the stick in Ultrawings. I'm on SteamVR outside-in tracking tho so maybe it's a case of more accurate hand tracking vs Quest?

SteamVR hardware can't do hand tracking. It works by evaluating the base station lasers striking across multiple sensors on a device.

I meant where your hands are, not what your fingers are doing.

The developer replied that they added thumbstick control for flight so if you have your thumb resting on it, it might be pushing in the opposite direction. Why wouldn't they note that in the tutorial! Also, the bringing you back to the menu screen to replay a failed mission is a ridiculous programming decision.

Quest 2 has pretty great controller tracking and very good hand tracking as long as they are in the 180 degree FOV.

June 8!!
Wow, Like nothing in VR has happened since then, or did I miss a thread migration?

Just got the Quest 3 for Xmas ( I informed my Santa that I'll be keeping it out and using it :O )

I just got it a few days ago and already ordered a new battery pack, headband (cheaper to buy them separate than the band/battery), controller sleeves, face pad, and a couple new games, Oh, and Zenni Optical prescription lenses.

I am coming in from the Quest 1 that I'd not used in about a year or 2 so sold it (got $100 for it!) and I can tell you this;
HOLY CRAP!

What a difference. The new full color passthrough is amazing.
The sheer resolution of the new screens are AMAZING.
It's much more comfortable, even with the stock strap, than the Quest 1.
I booted up Beat Saber after about a year of playing it and I still suck, but I can do the KDA song on Hard!! I used to be able to do it on Expert but gimme a break! I'm about 15 lbs heavier and much more out of shape than I was.

I look forward to getting my lenses, but this headset is much more forgiving for eyewear wearers.

I got my first pair of VR prescription lenses (for a PSVR 2) this year, and it's literally a game changer. I can wear the screen closer to my face, widening my field of view, and focus is much clearer outside the center of the screens. Plus - it's so weird to take off my glasses to do VR, rather than put them on. Totally worth the cost, and I can see why Apple's just making getting prescription lenses the default for their upcoming headset.

I went from a Q1 to a Q3 as well and it's a huge upgrade. There've been complaints on reddit about passthrough but I agree that it's amazing. Been playing it since I got it. My son has been playing the Q1 and broke the right controller (or one of his friends did). It works but tracking is all messed up unless you hold the controller sideways. Now I have to decide if I'm going to get a new controller for the Q1 or get him a Q2 for Christmas since I'm keeping the Q3 for me.

Oh for sure. The lens option is a must. I'd prefer if they had made them magnet compatible, so you could more easily pop them in and out, but it's not too bad.

Q2 for sure, if for no other reason than support. They are stopping patches , or have already, for the Q1 so it will eventually be a brick, or so I understand.

So far, I'm super happy I skipped a version. It's such a major upgrade.

Where did you buy yours from for PSVR2? My glasses aren't uncomfortable but they're progressive lenses and I can definitely see some blur the lower down I look. I also get some glare at certain angles.

I got mine from Reloptix. I also wear progressives, but the lenses only need to focus on one particular distance while you're doing VR, the apparent distance to the screen, so you give them your full prescription and they figure out the correct single-focus geometry. The lenses attach with magnets to a very thin frame that clips onto the headset's lenses, so they're easy to take off, clean, and pop back in. I later got non-prescription lenses, sans clip-on frame, so if someone who wears glasses tries out the PSVR 2, I pop in the non-prescription lenses and they can do so wearing their glasses, and I don't have to worry about their glasses scraping the headset's lenses.

With the PSVR 1 I just wore my glasses, and in relatively short order I managed to scratch both my glasses and my PSVR 1's lenses playing Headmaster, the soccer-ball-headbutting game, and had to live with a cloudy spot right in the center of my vision for years; really annoying. So I was more than willing to pay what Reloptix charged and not wear glasses at all while playing.

There is now a Steam Link official app for streaming wirelessly to Quest 2, 3, and Pro headsets and it supports Steam VR. I'm curious if it does a better job than Virtual Desktop.

I watched a video that said it was better for Steam games as you get the native Steam VR interface so it's not as clunky.

Edit: Sorry it's not in my youtube history. I think I watched it in a newsfeed that isn't attached to my google account. There are quite a few other videos reviewing it though.

DF still prefers Virtual Desktop but had nice things to say about Steam Link. It gets you to the SteamVR stuff faster but doesn’t have as smooth or motion as Virtual Desktop. Likely will improve tho.

There's a remote chance I might be getting a Quest 3 for Christmas. I've had a PSVR for years now, but being tethered to the PS4 and camera meant I didn't use it as much as I might have. Figured the Quest 3 being more self-contained means I might use it more. I also like having the option to run PC games on it, either physically connected or (hopefully) wirelessly.

One thing I'm looking forward to with PC VR is having access to more of those small, experimental experiences that didn't make it to PSVR. I remember there was some thing that took you on a tour of various celestial bodies that sounded cool, for example. Does anyone have a list of some of those that I could bookmark?
