GWJ Community Voice Comms

Despite nearly daily updates it's been over a month and they still haven't fixed it.

They probably won't. Windows 7 is near end of life so many developers aren't bothering even testing on that environment anymore.

The crew mentioned the GWJ discord in the most recent podcast episode, but the invite in the OP is dead. Can somebody refresh it?

Hello! Did the fix above work?
Here's the link as well: https://discordapp.com/invite/TwQSjYV

Latest invite also invalid. Thanks for looking into it!

Sorry, ignore the post from November, the one in the OP should work! (https://discord.com/invite/HfYNSdP)

Huh. I have a Discord account but when I try to log into the GWJ Discord it says I've already logged in? And then I can't log in?

Is your Forum name the same as your Discord name?

EDIT: Please check your PM’s

There are a million channels in our Discord - is there a channel dedicated to organizing playing together online? Thanks!

There definitely are a lot of channels.

I don't know how it's triggered but the Apollo bot in the Apollo-events channel posts gaming nights and things. Can anyone feed it events or just admins? Would be nice to get the Saturday night Rocket League events posted there.

Honestly, I've barely used the Discord, but it seems to me like it would be way more functional if 90% of the channels were removed.

It was a mess of cross conversations when it was more slimmed down (before Twitch Chat made the jump). Most of the channels and categories are user requested. Same with a lot of the categories for games - a game gets more traction than usual with a big group, it ends up with dedicated voice and text

Not anything specific - it was tried at one point and the channel was dead. Most are finding games either in the genre specific channels, specific game channels, or in #watercooler.

Figured out how to post events with Apollo bot today. Type &event in the appollo-events channel on GWJ discord and the bot will DM you the rest of the instructions. Take a look in that channel for examples. I posted one today. Curious to see if people notice and have any interest.

I saw the Bottle Rockets one - that the one you were referring to?

Yeah that’s the one I just added for RL. We’ve been doing it every Saturday for years but never had much of a way to advertise it outside the core group that normally plays.

So I'm a discord noob. I've attempted to learn to use a few times but it's a little overwhelming and not sure the benefits vs something like reddit.

Is there a use for it if you I don't want to voice chat with people? Can it work as a type of message board/forum or is it more focused on real time communications?

Why do you use it? Any tips are welcomed.

Each server is a bit different in focus. The GWJ discord has a lot of text chat rooms, which is how i use it 99% of the time. If you're familiar with IRC chat rooms, they basically work the same. There are some pre-made voice chats particular popular games, as well as the ability to spawn a temporary voice channel for groups that need/want it.

I keep hearing that the chat community is active, but it feels odd to split the community given that there is also a slack server. I generally use Discord almost exclusively for voice chat when playing games.

As a point of interest, Slack does NOT handle voice chat.

If it makes you feel better I also found it overwhelming and confusing, and I dislike that it's very aggressive on giving you notifications unless you turn them all off. I found right clicking and muting all the channels I have no interest in to be helpful.

Edit: sometimes goodjers stream their multiplayer games in there and I've enjoyed watching, you have to put yourself on mute and join the voice channel and annoyingly, can't text chat in voice channels but oh well.

I'm not using discord much in general now though because due to back injury cannot sit in a chair for long.

Hmm…..considering Back 4 Blood is out now and I’ve been playing that, maybe I should learn to do this, if my PC can handle it.

Do you have an NVIDIA card that's a 900 series (maybe even before?) or later? If so, you can probably start streaming without even installing something. Make sure Geforce experience is enabled, hit Alt+z and fiddle with 'broadcast live' settings and you are good to go. Your card should be able to handle it with minimal impact to system performance.
