The Unofficial GWJ Slack channel

You might have heard mention of it a few weeks back on the Conference Call, thanks to our wonderful Amoebic, but a few of your fellow Goodjers have banded together and created a Slack chat for any GWJ member to join.

What's Slack?

Think of it as an all-in-one chat, and instant message kind of deal. Almost like a super-modern IRC. You can use their web client and join the chat via a browser, but there's also clients for Windows, OS X, iOS, and Android. You can also choose how many notifications you'll wind up getting, all the way from "buzz anytime anyone says anything" down to "only buzz when I'm mentioned by name", and even "never buzz".

So what am I signing up for?

Quite honestly, it's a bunch of fellow Goodjers wasting the day and night chatting. Think of it like a watercooler for the GWJ site.

Ok, that sounds cool, I'm in. What next?

Awesome, welcome aboard! So the tiny downside is that Slack doesn't have a great way to do self-registration for groups. So instead, here's a Google Form for you to fill out and get an invite. We just need your email address, and your GWJ handle, and you should get an invite back from Slack within a few hours.

But I already use Slack for my job / some other reason. Can I still join?

Oh, totally! In fact, the Slack apps are practically BUILT for this! I'm personally in 3 Slacks right now, and can seamlessly switch between by work Slack and the GWJ Slack. And using the web client is just as easy - every group has their own URL on slack.com, so it's just up to you to open a 2nd or 3rd tab.

There is a gwj irc channel on Quakenet of course

IRC is tricky for drop in/drop out participation though, because no chat history is retained. Slack is much more async-friendly. There's a bigger group in IRC though.

How does one join the IRC channel?

For what it's worth, there are services out there like IRCCloud that allow you to retain IRC chat history. I've been using the free version of IRCCloud for a few months now -- you get two hours of idle time archived before you're disconnected -- and the iOS client is the best free mobile IRC client I've ever used by a significant margin.

ZNC also has that option which I have enabled for goodjers who have an account on my bouncer.

irssi in a detached screen

Woohooo! Another Slack channel to chat in to help me get through my work day

I've gone through and sent invites for anyone who filled out the form over the weekend.

What's the deal with the bots? I thought Certis had joined for a minute.

I think that was Maq playing around with a Slack Testing API connection? I know when you make an inbound connection, you can configure which channel it posts to, as well as the name of the "bot".

slackbot cannot be renamed, he just responds to key phrases like "goodjer".

And then if you use the RightGif slash command ("/gif [phrase]"), a bot makes a success post that only you can see, in addition to the gif you requested.

Woot! Love slack. I use it at work and with my small group of Star citizen friends.

Hook me up! (form filled in)

When I setup slack at work, I kept IRC as well. Some of us prefer it to slack for general communication, and I wanted to have a backup for those moments when slack goes away (they aren't super frequent, but its happened twice since we signed up). There are a lot of Slack/IRC bots out there, but https://github.com/ekmartin/slack-irc was the best of the two way bots I could find at the time. It works pretty well, if someone feels like making sure there isn't a split between those who prefer IRC and those who prefer slack.

May I be the first to say...

I (think) I sent the invite from my phone last night when I saw it come it - did you get it?

We have a Slack channel? Could have used that at draft time instead of Discord. Ah well. Joining.

Just requested an invite myself. Thanks.

Filled out the form. I use Slack for work.

I signed up too look forward to slacking off with you fine folks.

Sent an invite through...

I have requested the slackage

Smythe of the Words nudged me to hop aboard, so I sent a request in.

GWJ is on Slack?!?! Oh great, my productivity is going to get even worse now!

Form submitted

EDIT: oops.

So I did the email form thing to get invited but got nothing. Is it still open or is the Slack Group Closed?

Yeah, can we open this up a little?

We would have had some chat going in the #nfl room on draft day, except people who had not already been added to the Slack team had no way to get in.

Maybe give out some admin statuses to some of our long-tenured users who can respond to requests in this thread to join the team.

OR yall could join the GWJ DISCORD. It has BOTS. RPG Bots!

And ME!
