2016 games you may not know about.

I know RPS covered both of these but I'm looking forward to them:

VA-11 Hall-A - Cyberpunk Bartending graphic novel thingy

Samorost 3

Not in the RPS list:

Order of the Thorne - Retro point n' click adventure

Cosmic Star Heroine - It's both a JRPG and a Western Indie!

Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna - Another throwback JRPG from Square-Enix which is channeling Chrono Trigger in many ways

Kathy Rain - Another retro point & click adventure

Wattam - New game by the Katamari Damacy and Noby Noby Boy creator

Automaticity / Unavowed - The next two Wadjet Eye releases after Shardlight

Headlander - New Double Fine game (and all that entails)

Regeria Hope - Phoenix Wright-alike made by one of our Boston GWJers!

I'm a backer as well and I'm really hoping they nail this despite the team obviously biting off way more than they could handle at the start. Well that and Arc System Works finally getting the IP. There's a number of new RCR/Kunio games available on 3DS in Japan (including a recently announced remake of RCR) and I'm crossing my fingers that this does well enough to warrant getting some of those localized or at least ported to PC like they did with the recent port of one of the sports game remakes.

Yeah, this one's been a troubling kickstarter for a while. I hope they pull through, the team definitely seems to have passion even if the communication about their progress has been lacking.

I haven't been following what Arc's been up to since getting the IP. Seeing the one title pop up on Steam the other week was a surprise, and now you're giving me hope that we might get some good stuff brought over. Getting an RCR remake from them would be awesome.

In addition to Project Setsuna that shoptroll mentioned, on the JRPG front I'll be keeping an eye on Exist Archive, a spiritual successor to Valkyrie Profile from tri-Ace, and Stranger of Sword City, an upcoming dungeon crawler with beautiful Gothic artwork.

Also, a little thing called Shin Megami Tensei IV Final

Million did several 3DS games (original games, sequels, and remakes of the NES titles) in the franchise although I'm not sure if Arc was the developer on those. As far as Japanese franchises go Kunio is definitely obscure here despite RCR having some element of name recognition, so it really comes down to whether or not it's worth bothering with localization. I'm hoping that they'll be smart and continue skipping retail releases with the games, but they really need to do some better marketing since the PC port of the sports game was non-existent.

Also, the "continuity" for the franchise here in the West is a complete mess.

Here's PC Gamer's list of games coming out in 2016. It contains both AAA titles nearly everyone knows about, and some hidden gems in here (a few of which have already been mentioned).

I thought there was nothing really major coming for me this year, other than XCOM2 and Mass Effect: Andromeda. But then I saw The Guild 3 is launching this year, and that pretty much is a day 1 purchase for me. The Dwarves looks like it might be interesting too.

To be blunt though, I still need to play the Witcher 3, Star Wars Knights of the Fallen Empire, Rome: Total War - Attila and Fallout 4. That alone is 4-6 months of 2016 right there.

And as mentioned on the previous page, Rock Paper Shotgun has an even more extensive list (300+ games).

SO MUCH TRAILER. Thank you, Pyxi!

Editing my videos so they're behind spoilers(for page loading) and adding one more that I'm looking forward too:

American Truck Simulator

Spoiler:

Is there a "game-y" element to the truck simulators? Do you get points, or have time trials, or unlock new trucks, etc? I'm a sucker for farming games like Harvest Moon, so I understand the draw to relaxing games. I just don't know if driving around at regular speeds would draw me in.

Hyper Light Drifter

Spoiler:

FYI, spoiler tagging the Youtube embeds doesn't prevent them from loading.

Catch all for 2016's best game.

Cuphead.

If it's the same as the Euro version, the game side of it has you start your own company with a single rented truck and then have to build up your own fleet and business over time (I think...I haven't really gotten that far into it personally, others here will have a better idea).

You deliver cargo to earn money, with which you can buy new trucks and stuff. But it's a sim game so the focus is on it being as real to life as possible so nothing really 'game-y'.

Yep! Which is why this is one of a handful of threads I can't browse on my phone.

Thanks for posting Regeria Hope, by the way. Looking forward to that one.

So many great games coming out. So few I can play on my PS4.

Otacon brought an early alpha of it to the PAX East meetup 2 years ago and I was pretty impressed with it. Granted, the PW series has been on my gaming bucket list for ever, but it was really cool to see how easy it was to get up and running with something like RenPy.

The 2016 IGF finalists have been announced. Because of the way the rules for eligibility work, while many of the games were released in 2015, there are a few that are due out this year.

Congratulations, Fez! IGF 2016 Game of the Year!

Also, Polygon has a "Games of 2016" feature. Most of which you've probably heard about, but there are a few I've not heard as much about that still look interesting: Friday the 13th, Allison Road, Perception, Pamela, Tacoma, Outer Wilds, Obduction, We are Chicago, Attack on Titan, Megaton Rainfall, Below, Abzu, What Remains of Edith Finch, Donut County, Necropolis, Inside, Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, and Fragments of Him. Not sure they'll all make 2016, but probably worth checking out.

Oh wow, here the Water Tastes Like Wine looks interesting.
If Over the Garden Wall was East Coast Fantasy Americana this looks like Mid/West Coast Fantasy Americana and that sounds awesome.

Oh yeah, the Fighting Fantasy Sorcery games are coming to Steam soon as well - from the makers of 80 days and with apparently some REALLY neat stuff in the later games when they start to branch off from the old gamebooks and put their own spin on things...

Those games are great, and definitely worth getting!

I totally missed the joke and checked the site for confirmation.

Great thread. Many thanks!

Lot's of vids to watch when I get home.

Just a heads up that Danganronpa has an arguably really transphobic character in it. I decided to pass on it based on what I read and what I was told by people whose opinions I trust.

Quadrilateral Cowboy is a 2016 game you may not know about. But then to be fair Quadrilateral Cowboy is a game that may not come out in 2016.

Not quite true, there are game-y elements: you earn XP for your deliveries and level up, which grants you skill points to spend to get access to more types of jobs (six skills with six ranks each: hazmat, urgent, long distance, etc); and unlocks new truck accessories (so many truck accessories). You can be denied XP for damaging the cargo too. ATS will gamify that even more by introducing three different levels of parking difficulty at the delivery point of each job for extra XP.

Your employees, once you have some, will also earn XP and have the same skills, and you can set their skill priorities too if you want.

You can also turn off the governor in ETS2's options, if you don't want to drive at regular speeds. I don't know if trucks in North America also have governors, but if they do I'm sure ATS will also have the option.

And now I need to try a truck simulator...Do they sell giant steering wheels for this?
