The Quarterly JRPG Club Gaiden - Q1 2016 - The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky

Pages

We're getting the jump on this game a bit because it's really long. This quarter's pick is The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky for PSP and PC.

Here's the breakdown:

The game consists of a prologue plus four chapters. The second and third chapters look to be the longest, but I'm not sure how to break that all up over the course of the three month quarter. Anyone have any suggestions?

I've never seen this site, but I like it. "Leisure"... that must be me.

Sorry I have no suggestions how to break this up. I'm not even sure whether I have it in me to play two JRPGs at the same time, being currently owned by Xenoblade Chronicles X. :/

If I remember right, the first few chapters/prologue are very short: a handful of hours total. I think it'd be fair to make those the first month and the last two having a month each? Or something along those lines.

Yay. I'm going to jump into this tonight to get a headstart. I still expect to stall out and drop it before finishing, but I'm going to give it an honest try.

I really liked it when I first played the game on release. Very different from most RPGs, and one of the few I didn't stall out on.

The site is howlongtobeat.com and it's amazing. I started using it over a year ago for some stuff, and I use it regularly in the 'main' Quarterly thread.

Clock, as far as division, why don't we use the divvy-up on the right side of this walkthrough?

It's split into 31 parts, so we can just say 1-10, 10-20, 20-31, with a tinge of 'use your best judgement' factor. I would recommend saying something like "Stop when you reach the town of "%%%%%" or something like that. Unfortunately looking into this may be minor spoilers for you only, but it will help everyone else out.

Does that seem reasonable?

Hello, friends. This month I go gaiden. Just picked this up on pc and I am ready to go.

I think I might actually be able to do this one, since I can take it with me on the Vita during my travels. Looking forward to it!

Be prepared to read. A lot. It's the chattiest of the chatty RPGs.

Splitting that guide up by word count instead of just by section, it looks like the game would break into thirds best like so:

January: Prologue and Chapter One
February: Chapter Two and Chapter Three
March: Chapter Four

Now, that might just be that the back half of the game requires more explanation, but let's try for that and see how it's working out.

Sold! Come on Steam Sale!

Wait, the purpose of these is to clear the backlog not add to it, right? Haha... aaaah.

Oh man. The steam sale! I just bought this on steam, so it'll probably be 2 dollars next week. You're welcome.

Thanks, Wembley!

Well, I just bought it on PSP, so if it goes on sale, you can thank me.

I've already said so in the previous discussion thread, but just popping in to say I'm definitely committing to this for my quarterly GWJ jrpg.

One of my favourite PSP JRPGs (and there are quite a few of them). I certainly look forward to doing a replay along with you all, especially considering the sequel just came out.

I went ahead and started this. I'm a notoriously slow player and don't want to get left behind.

I'm maybe one hour in, but so far I'm pretty positive. The story is pretty tropey to start, but there are some nice touches with the gameplay and presentation. I like the movement speed, for instance, and the monster and recipe books that keep track of things for you. It might look like a PSOne game, but at least it doesn't play like one.

Also, the battle system seems neat. My concern is that it'll get a bit tedious if the fights get too complicated, but for right now it's fun. Automatically moving units into attach range helps.

I also got a head start on this one. I am probably about an hour or so in with a couple hours of play time.

My biggest complaint right now is that you cannot move and attack on the same turn. If you want to attack you have to let the game auto move your characters which can cause problems with the first character knocking enemies out of range of others.

Well, I got a another early Xmas gift of cash and figured I would spend it on this. So, now I own this and will be joining the Gaiden Club for 2016. Just started it up for a few minutes last night and the intro is nice. The two usable characters so far are likable up to this really early point.

Not 2 dollars, but it's 50% off in the steam sale right now.

I finished Legend of Legacy this weekend, so it's time to dig out the old PSP, get it charged, and start a fresh playthrough of Trails in the Sky!

Started this a couple of days ago to get the ball rolling and found it charming, though it's a bit slow to start. The city/town at the beginning is interesting enough and the two main characters are enjoyable for the time being.

I've read/heard some Ghibli vibes attributed to this series, so I'm definitely looking forward to getting further into the plot. I hope I can play a good bit of it in the weeks to come.

This one has been on the pile for ages so might as well count me in as well.

I'm in! Just picked it up off the steam sale. The only thing I have to finish before starting this is Undertale, so I'm basically there.

Count me in. I actually downloaded it on my Vita yesterday because I've heard it's really good.

Do we have a specific date we want to be done by? Even playing an hour a day, it'll take me two months... which is rough.

We're looking to finish by the end of March. The goal is to finish the prologue and chapter one in January, chapters two and three in February, then finish in March.

I'm fairly well into the prologue I think. I'm glad I started fresh, I had forgotten some of the dialogue beats that i assume will be important later. The game is every bit as charming as I remember!

The orbment system is also as odd as I remember too. Maybe this time I will get a better grasp on it.

It is definitely charming. I'm probably a decent way into the prologue and don't completely understand the orbment system so hoping that its uses become more clear as things go on.

I plan to sink a couple of hours into this today after work. Want to develop a healthy routine of this mixed in with my pile picks for January.

The nice thing about working on a portable format game (I'm playing this on my trusty old PSP) is that it makes it easy to ensure I get at least a half hour of gametime in almost every day before I crash for the night.

Planning to start playing tonight. Getting a bit ahead of myself, but that orbment system looks more than a little daunting...

It reminds me a bit of the materia system so far. It's a little bit easier to understand in practice.

Ok, started. Or started again rather - I seem to recall I got to the end of chapter one in the past before drifting away from the game but since I remember virtually nothing about it I'm as well going from scratch again.

Still feels weird (but neat) playing an entirely mouse-driven JRPG.

*oh and apparently it still seems to have the bug (at least it does for me) where if you run at anything bigger than about 1600x900 resolution it'll randomly crash to desktop during scene changes, so might want to take that into account if running the PC version.
