NAS to NAS backup solution

Our little office is starting to do a lot of work and we are starting to think about backing up our files. We store all our files on one NAS currently and we need to get some sort of redundancy in place. I know off site is the best, but I dont want to be paying monthly for a online backup solution as it will take way to long to recover those files. Is there a NAS to NAS solution that I can backup from the office NAS to a NAS at my home? Or should I get 1 better NAS with a hot plug-able drive I can swap around once a week and take the backup home.

I don't know about NAS to NAS but have been looking into backing up my NAS to external backup. One problem I ran into is that it is impossible to clone a NAS drive. I have no idea why that is but many of the the software I tested couldn't copy my NAS. I had to settle with copying the folders on the drive instead.

The second problem I ran into is finding a program that could do a mirror backup. Nearly all the backup programs were differential, incremental or full backups. I have some ideas on programs that might do mirror backups but I haven't tried any good ones that work with NAS drives.

Another problem was finding software that could be paused and/or copy files that are in use. I have 2TB of stuff on my NAS. The backup to a external drive takes about 2 days so it would be nice if I could still use the drive while it is being copied or pause backup so I can access a file. I know that some programs do this but I haven't tried them yet.

I just now updated my NAS OS and replaced a bad drive on it. Before the update I tried using Crashplan, filesync, and easeus todo to backup the NAS. All had their problems. Crashplan couldn't backup the NAS at all. Filesync could only do one folder at a time so I would have to create a job for each folder. Easeus can not do mirror backups. I was in a hurry so just did a full backup with Easeus which I was sad to see put the files into one big zip like file. However, I can restore the files.

So I'm still looking for a good NAS backup solution.

Buy a small ZFS nas device. Copy current files to it. Buy a second ZFS NAS and set up a connection between the two sites. Use ZFS replication between the two to "trickle" changes between them. Backup as usual to the ZFS device (mounted via NFS or CIFS as needed on systems) and you should be good.

online backup isnt as expensive through amazon as I thought. I'll likely try that. Thing is I will have to buy a new NAS as the one we are using is rather old and dumb. Is there a recommended way to copy the files from one unit to the other?

Do I do it over the net work? do I swap the drives from the old one to the new one and initiate the copying to the new drives that way?

We have an old dlink and I decided on the qnap TS-231 2 bay drive for a replacement. If I ever figure out this syncing between NASes ill uses the old to to back up to and stick it in a very far place of our building.

I just found out about Bittorrent Sync. This is a free program that syncs files between PCs, phones, tablets, or whatever. So the good news for me is that it is already installed on my NAS. Also it seems to be able to do everything I want.

You might one to check and see if your NAS has a built in option for NAS to NAS backup. The one I have a Synology Diskstation has a built in option for that and it is over 6 years old. But from everything I am reading BT Sync can do it.

I'll look into both those options once I receive the NAS I ordered. Thanks.

Also depending on your NAS, some of them can run CrashPlan, which is a cloud backup service. You can run the client and back up point-to-point for free, and if you decide to have an offsite copy later, you can enable backing up to them as well.

My Qnap has several ways of achieving this if you need an example. https://www.qnap.com/i/useng/family_...
