Devilian - an ARPG MMO by TRION - Catch All

So Trion is bringing another Korean game to the States. I love ARPGs and MMOs so I am giving this one a whirl. It's not like I dont have a million other games to play, but I'm a sucker for an ARPG. Is anyone else playing?

There's a streamer on my Twitter feed that's playing regularly... I haven't actually watched any gameplay though. How does it compare to Diablo? Torchlight was good, but I didn't sustain with it too long - Path of Exile was too complex, yet Diablo, I'll come back to every few months.

So far it's not bad. I've enjoyed my time but I am still early on in the game and have only played one class. Skill tree isnt overly complex and respeccing is free if you dont like your build. Loot isnt prolific in the early levels like Diablo, but the quest rewards are where you get a majority of your loot early on. The first 20 levels or so are designed as a big tutorial.

I would like to play it, but I find the graphics style extremely problematic in its sexist style. Perhaps the koreans advances in male-female relationships haven't advanced very much in recent years, but I would cringe if any of my daughters ever were to see this game and its depiction of females.

So.. diablo with a subscription fee and cash shop?

No sub. Cash shop seemed reasonable when I played in beta. The game seemed fun enough to give it another shot though. Between that and Grim Dawn it scratches the ARPG itch.

Don't forget Path of Exile.

Path of exile is great but the skill tree makes me too anxious. Plus, I could never wrap my head around the trading system. Every time I attempted to trade I feel like I got ripped off.

The game is teetering on the "handing levels out like candy so that they are meaningless" balance. But so far I really liked the shadow hunter. (though I wish it weren't gender locked) It surprises me that so few games have the whip/chain weapon archetype as I really enjoy them and they are such a fresh break from typical sword and/or board, bow or fireball characters.
The feel of the combat is good so far. The devil transformation seems like a dumb gimmick so I am hoping it can be largely ignored. (unfortunately it seems like it may be more necessary for solo players on tough targets/bosses)
IMHO this game proves that making Diablo into an mmo offers absolutely no value. Yay, there are public spaces with dozens of people running around! (all largely ignoring you) Wow, a couple of other players who look exactly like you, wearing rags, are knocking down barricades and hunting the same fish men (that are totally not murlocks) that respawn in no more than a second.
The skill tree looks like a steeper learning curve than D3 which isn't necessarily bad. It looks like it may lean toward the Diablo 2 system where it is possible to have many bad or gimped builds.
I was a little shocked/disappointed that the opening cinematic was NSFW (in a Dead or Alive vein) within 5 seconds with little reason or exposition. Not that I am opposed to that. It is more that it was so immediate and had so little to do with what the rest of my ~10 hours spent in the beta event was like.
I am not going to buy a founders pack so I don't know if access to the open beta (on the 10th) will require a purchase or not. If it does not, I will play it. If it does, I think I am going to pass.

Yeah, the more I play the less "woo hoo" I am. So far the first 30 levels seem like on big tutorial. You can gimp yourself because you can respec for free. It's not bad for F2P.

Trion burned me pretty hard with ArcheAge.

I'm going to be very much wait and see with anything they do.

Yeah I never could get myself to stick to Rift and their path with ArcheAge likewise turned me off.

Welp, it is pretty bad when 1 of your 4 characters is really bland out of the gate (berserker) and 2 more are okay (evoker and gunner).
Such a shame because the shadowhunter is not wholly unique but rare and much more fun than the other offerings. And I really don't feel it is a difference of opinion since I typically prefer wizard and archer archetypes in action rpgs and mmos.
The game has potential but you can see why the Korean server closed down and when you are relying on cash shop revenue, you have to hook people out of the gate and there are no hooks to salivate over.

I am in the same boat. Very disappointed in Trion with ArcheAge and I willing to accept it is my own fault for giving them money but really feel they did not deliver on what I payed for.

I contacted Trion to give them a chance to make it right and they basically told me too bad so sad.

Trion is going to have to really do something so amazing for me to overlook that.

They reorganized the skill tree so that the major skills in a class - the ones you want before branching out - are now much closer to the start. You can get a faster feel for how a build is going to play, and it's much easier to plan. Plus you can now add in jewels to customize your build.

Trading, though... I don't really trade. And the recent revelations about market arbitrage and such kind of bothered me, but that's outside the control of the company. Can't say they've improved that, and they won't without building their own auction house.

But it's a great fun game.

so there doesn't seem to be any way to hide the megaphone chat? I tried unchecking it from every tab but it still pops up above the chat window and.. like most /all chats it gets pretty vile.

I'm pretty sure that little tiny round emblem to the upper left of the red health globe will turn the entire chat window on and off.
