Stardock is remaking Star Control!

I wasn't trying to diminish...

Nevermind.

Actually, no, I don't. Whether it's a company, a person behind the product, the DRM scheme, or a distribution method they don't approve of, GWJ has a long and storied history of having people dogpile a new thread to declare that they won't be buying a game.

I did not follow gamergate when it started, but I did check up on it when someone in the galciv3 thread said, that they wouldnt buy it due to gamergate and stardock.

I checked around a bit then, and maybe I didnt get the whole picture, but I did not read anything about Wardell/Stardock saying anything negative about women. I did find some pretty rational arguments about games journalism.

I know the whole gamergate 'ethics in games journalism' is a ridiculous joke when told in the context of what started gamergate. But from my neutral point of view Wardells/Stardocks comments seemed ok. And not something to ban a company for.

So what am I missing?

The part where he harassed a female member of staff I expect.

To be clear, I was saying that I really, really want to buy and play the game and regret that I probably cannot.

Oh! I think I was asked to help develop art for this game.

Afaik he was cleared completely of those charges. Or is this one of those cases where you are guilty while proven innocent?

There were a number of charges, some of which he refuted. However, there were others which he acknowledged (and wondered why they were considered wrong).

Edit: to be clear, there is behaviour he apparently considers acceptable that I don't. And, based on his beliefs, I definitely wonder about the other stuff. Anyway, I'm not on any crusade, it's just my personal buying decision. All this stuff is out there if you care to dig it up.

Not to mention that there's nothing else to talk about for the game, unless they've released more information that I haven't seen.

I filled out the survey. I'd just love to see more SC.

If someone reputable would pick up the Starflight ip I'd be so happy.

The suit and countersuit were settled with prejudice.

Hi.. not sure you know how our legal system works (and sometimes doesn't work). Greg Hardy is also considered innocent by the law.

At the risk of repeating myself.

Don't want to derail this thread, but there's plenty of discussion in the P&C threads (most recently the Kool-Aid one) for folks who are interested.

Sigh, why'd you have to go there? *weeps*

Well, there was this, Starflight - The Lost Colony:
https://sites.google.com/site/starfl...

Amateur project, to be sure, but looks like it's worth a try. Really, being less primitive than Starflight is a pretty low bar

How dare you.

Hey, I love Starflight! I'm just remembering the days when EGA vs VGA was a real choice you had to make. (well before that, it was GRYK vs CMYK CGA so life does improve

Thinking about it, I have to wonder what the mod potential of UQM is, to build a different management level on top of the basic move-around-the-galaxy mechanics.

Sounds like you need to play the Sega Genesis version.

I know, sounds crazy, but they updated the sh*t out of that thing for the Genesis.

I dont know anything at all. But the stuff I digged up in 30 mins all seemed ok. I think I know what I need to know now. Im not venturing in to P&C for this

Like I said, no crusades, do what you want to do.

So I received a response to my survey and I've been selected!

....to pay them $100 to alpha/beta test their game...

I find this offensive, Stardock doesn't want to pay for a testing team, they want customers to pay for the privilege? FU Stardock.

$100? Somebody thinks this remake of a 20 year old niche game is going to be a cash cow. I really have to question their judgment on this. Maybe they should investigate how well Gabriel Knight and Shadowgate fared recently.

It's $100 for the founder's package, which is the base game and all future DLC and expansions. They did the same thing with GalCiv3. The game itself will be $30-$50.

Well, I'm in.

I mean...it's Star Control...

A $100 founder package is one thing. Asking me to fill out a survey to participate in testing is different. I wouldn't have filled out the survey and provide my information if they'd tell me it was simply a $100 founder's package.

This kind of "deal" should simply be on a store page, not through a private selection.

You know I'm heavily torn on this.

I'd honestly forgotten about Wardell's disgusting behavior towards his staff and childish defense of his actions. But thanks to all of you bringing up his GamerGate-ness, it has forced me to remember that the only real power I seem to have anymore is to vote with my dollars.

But I really, I mean really, loved me some Star Control.

There's no way I'm buying a Founder's package. I agree with Mrwynd. The original email was phrased to imply that they were looking for beta testers, not screening for investors.

This has been relegated to a wait and see for me.

Afaik, it wasn't a survey for testing:

Because this franchise is so loved, we are looking for people who are sincerely invested in the future of these games. In order to do this, we are asking that people who would like the opportunity to join our Founder's Program fill out a survey

I think you misunderstood what the survey was for. I'm reading through the survey now since I didn't bother applying. Seems like it's trying to weed out people in the industry and get people with actual Star Control experience in the Alpha. They'll open up the Founder's program later, I'm sure.

But, yes, YOU HAVE BEEN HAND SELECTED TO GIVE US MONEY! is a legitimate gripe because that's kinda silly if you want to look at it that way and I certainly won't stop you.

YOU HAVE BEEN HAND SELECTED TO GIVE US MONEY!

Box quotes.

Maybe it's because I knew going in they were gonna do this founders deal, since they've done it for previous games, that it doesn't bother me like it does some of y'all. :/ They really could've been clearer about that, I'll grant you.
