Fallout 4 Catch-All 2.0

Pages

Now that Fallout 4 is launched let's start a new catch-all! Please use spoiler tags with a bit of context for what the spoiler contains.

Have fun in the wasteland!

I'm terrified to check my delivery status. I'm also terrified of my work productivity today once the package arrives.

Here are some names the game recognizes.

Spoiler:

So if you want to make Fallout 4 Mad Max Men, then you'll be heartened at how many full names work. Ken Cosgrove. Megan Draper. Roger Sterling.

I'm thinking about going with survival difficulty for the first time in a Fallout game. Anyone else doing it or thinking about it?

Actually...yes, for once. I feel like a bit of a challenge

I was going to tank luck, but those three perks at 7-8-9 look really killer together. My current plan is going to be...

S 1 P 4 E 1 C 4 I 6 A 6 L 6

Y'know, that's pretty similar to how I set my character up initially. However, I started to freak out that having a "1" in any stat would seriously hinder my progress and ended up with more average stats across the board.

Rethinking it, I've only *just* left the vault I may reload my save and go my original route. I've always kind of tried to create characters that are just average in everything, and then end up struggling later on. Might be a nice change of pace to kind of min/max a little bit

The VPN unlock method worked well for me last night, but even though I put in maybe two or three hours, I barely walked out of the starting area thanks to character creation and

Spoiler:

playing with the options in the first settlement.

For those of you who tend towards the min maxing side, here are a few super, super minor spoilers that you will probably find important when planning your character and choosing your starting stats.

Spoiler:

1. If you explore the ruins of your house well just after you emerge, you will get a free point to assign to any attribute.
2. You will find the perception bobblehead VERY early.
3. Don't know for sure yet, but it sounds like the rest of the SPECIAL stat bobbleheads won't be found for quite a while. Charisma and intelligence might be a little easier to get when your levels are in the teens, but the rest you probably won't find until level 20+.

Just got some time to play! Woo-hoo! A miracle!

I decided I'm going to play "myself." More or less. I'm a father and a husband so I can identify with the character's prime motivation (which at leas tin the begging I think is just, 'Survive and rescue your family!') and I think it might be fun to play as myself. I've actually taken a test to find out what my real life D&D stats were. Some friends of mine came up with all these various activities and ways and spent a whole day testing it out. My D&D stats are;

STR - 10
DEX - 13
Con - 8
INT - 14
WIS - 13
CHA -11

I only have so many points in Fallout, so I'm translating that to

S - 3
P - 3
E - 3
C - 5
I - 8
A - 2
L - 4

I named my character after myself and my plan at this point is to more or less do what I think I would do. This probably means ignoring everything but rescuing my family, except insofar as things help me rescue my family, but we will see. I've never done this before and I've isolated myself pretty well against spoilers for Fallout 4 so most of the game should be a surprise to me.

Am I wrong or did they mention that there wasn't a level cap? If so it would seem like you can max out everything if you are so inclined.

I love min maxing. Even this build is way more average than I usually go.

Loose plan wise...

Spoiler:

I think I'm going to do cover some what seems like essential early perks (lockpicking, hacking, maybe Black Widow for the extra dialogue options) and then swing hard into building a character that generates tons of AP and crits with things like Action Boy and the Luck 6-7-8-9 perks (Better Crits, Critical Banker, Grim Reaper's Sprint, Four Leaf Clover.)

Once I have that set up, I'll move towards mod perks like Science, Gun Nut, etc. Or maybe I'll do that first. And then at some point Charisma and Strength need to be bumped for Local Leader and Armorer. GAH! There's so much to do and I don't even have it yet.

Loving it! Exploration is awesome and the wasteland is so much more dense than before with stuff everywhere. I am slightly disappointed at the lack of skills and it seems no repair or weapon damage...I can't tell if that's good or bad...but it's a very minor concern.

On settlements, I saw a brief popup about assigning people to food but I didn't get to read it. What does that mean? Do I assign people or is it automatic?

Thought this had to be mistaken so I googled, looks like I was wrong:
"To our fans who’ve asked: Fallout 4 doesn’t end when the main story is over and there is no level cap. You can keep playing and leveling."[source]

ETA on world's first perfect Fallout character?

It probably already happened.

That's roughly the build I'm going for. I was going to go for a high-concept Jesse Custer character but given all the interactions are voiced I'm basically going to go for an Arcade Gannon character.

Honestly I normally use command lines to boost all of my stats when I play these games so I can just explore and do story stuff. Knowing that if I put enough time into it while I explore that I can max out everything makes me pretty happy.

My copy arrives tomorrow...for anyone familiar with Boston, how recognizable is the landscape?

Yeah, my shooter skills aren't so hot, so I need to lean on them VATS

So once I made some INI changes to disable mouse acceleration and increase FOV, this game started to feel pretty good. I don't know that it feels as tight as Halo, but it's definitely at least into competent shooter territory. Also, VATS is really well done. I like that it just slows down time instead of stopping it completely. It's too early to say much about the writing, but unless the game just bellyflops a few more hours in I'd give this one an A. I'll definitely be finishing it, which can't even be said of Witcher 3.

All I can say is... no SLI support. What the heck Bethesda? Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Fallout NV all had SLI support. It's 2015 and dual graphics cards are a thing. I might be able to get it going by playing with the nv inspector but come on.... how can they not develop with SLI in mind. Pure BS.

I like it because you can raise a stat, then go to the Perks tab to see what is now unlocked as a perk.

Wow, Fallout 4's Metacritic scores from users are getting torched. Man, there is some serious nerdrage out there.

Potentially at least partly because you have to do crap like this on the PC version (how to fix FOV, skip intro, and remove mouse accel).

Those CTD's. Yikes.

I'm part of the problem people... I'm probably going to buy this game just so I can be part of the conversation.

HELP!

That's not too dissimilar from my plan. I'll spoiler the whole thing so that people who don't care or consider information about what other players have been finding effective at this point to be spoiling their fun this early on, but other than the thing I marked in my previous post, I won't be revealing anything of consequence here.

Spoiler:

While I've been avoiding information on story and characters like the plague, I revel in learning about the mechanics of games before I start.

So, the reports I've read seem to indicate that crafting is the route to power early on, closely followed by being able to get the most out of the settlement system. So, my starting build is centered around maximizing access to crafting and setting up for access to settlements, while preparing for a hard dive down the luck and agility trees for combat effectiveness later in the game.

To start: S2 P3 E3 C5 I6 A5 L4
Post acquiring the SPECIAL book and perception bobblehead: S3 P4 E3 C5 I6 A5 L4

This gives access to every crafting option other than melee weapons and explosives -- and melee weapons will be available once I get the strength bobblehead. Explosives, well, we'll have to see how useful they are, and then maybe I'll put a level into upping my perception.

As for settlements, the big gating factor for being able to use them is getting Local Leader from the charisma tree, which will be available when I get the charisma bobblehead, and that will be my number one objective as soon as I hit level 10 (and if that proves too hard at that level, I guess I'll drop a level into it).

Anyway, from the starting point above, my first few levels will go into:
Hacking
Lockpicking
Gun Nut
Armorer
Science
Black Widow
Action Boy
Scrapper
Awareness

My later plans are a bit more up in the air. Looking through the crafting and settlement building options last night turned up two perks that I wasn't really considering as being potentially important for those systems: medic and cap collector (cap collector especially, since it's required to build the highest grade of stores).

For now I do plan on adding points to luck later later, though -- those high luck perks just sound too good, and luck affects your chances of encountering rare and powerful items. I also plan on abusing drugs once I find the endurance and intelligence bobbleheads, which will give me access to the Chem Resistant and Chemist.

I spent far too long in character creation and the attributes screen. Nevertheless, I'm about to leave the vault.

Jonathan is a spoken name. Cool!

I prefer this one; everything is on one page, and it has support for marking when you've found bobbleheads.

Although it's still missing support for the free point found in the ruins of your house.

This is not cool.

That's a pretty cool plan Zero! Man, I can already tell that the game is full of interesting tough choices (I'm sure the plot is as well!)

Spoiler:

It is definitely good to know that modding is essential. I still might try to hit that luck run ASAP before swinging around to all of the mods and the settlement building. I'm also forgetting about stealth, which I want at least a light dip into early.

For me I'm going to be pushing lockpicking and hacking. Nothing has bothered me more in the past than not being able to get into some secret I found because my character isn't up to snuff.

EDIT - I monkeyed with that stat simulator until the perks I wanted were the highest to be activate-able, and the next one for each stat was not as important to me. So:

Blacksmith. Locksmith. Aquaboy. Attack Dog. Hacker. Sneak. Mysterious Stranger.

And I might exchange one of those for Rad Resistant... considering now...

Nearly every game does this. Heck, Far Cry 4 was unplayable for a month because not only did it had severe mouse acceleration, it was baked into the game in a way that made it impossible to turn off. Personally, I googled this as soon as I installed the game (I need to up FOV to avoid motion sickness), made the necessary changes, and was going in 5 minutes. No big deal. If people are actually worked up about this they need to get over themselves. That isn't to say I like it. I mean, no PC game should ever have mouse acceleration on by default. But it's expected at this point, so can't really be a mark against them.

To be fair. I think this is why the game locks at either 30 or 60 fps. To unlock the framerate you have to make INI changes, which I assume this guy did. It's still a bad design, but not broken unless you're hacking around in INI files.
