I'd think it would really depend on interests although I've never really found a place I call "home". I float from spot to spot and while this forum is really chill I'd love to be able to find somewhere I really 'click'.
What have your experiences been?
Confirmed. RamblinRob is Certis' sock puppet.
Gotta stick around to really fit anywhere.

You're my sock puppet.
Rob, I'd say the game, tech and everything else sub-forums of GWJ are some of the best on the interwebz. Sports is better than average though it can be rough for a newbie/more casual fan. I'd honestly recommend making some friends first on the boards before wading into P&C.
These views are solely my own and in no way am I Elysium's sock puppet.

Is this where we get a bunch of quick cuts showing Jonman's posting over the course of his time on GWJ but, instead of it being Jonman, we see it was really a sock puppet all along?

I love it when you talk dirty.

I need an adult.
I've been lurking in different forums for a while and this one definitely seems the friendliest.
[blasphemy]There are a couple I've posted on over the years that I's say are nearly as friendly and entertaining as these forums. [/blasphemy]
This one is certainly more diverse, close-knit, and generous than the others.
I don't know about "the best" but The Bar (http://www.th3b4r.com) was my main internet hangout for like five to ten years. When it was active there were a lot of good people there, starting with refugees from the Volition forums when Freespace 2 was current. Of course it slowed down a while ago (haven't edited my profile there since 2003 apparently) but it's a nostalgic place for me.
Gamers With jobs is, quite seriously, the place I consider Home on the internet.
But it's honestly even more than that. I have made genuine friendships through this community, and have been very happy on the few opportunities I have had to visit with fellow goodjers in person. It's not just an internet home, it is a community to which I feel a genuine sense of belonging. I honestly hope that this community persists in some form for the rest of my life. It's wild to think I have already been here for over a decade!
Yeah, I've been in other forums, but GWJ is home.
This forum is my home, but I get the impression that Ravelry (which is ms. bravado's Internet home) has the best software out there.
And they probably need it, to deal with the size of their user base.
Come on guy, you know our answer. What are you trying to accomplish here?

He's not your guy, friend!
I'm not your friend, buddy!
I, literally, grew up with/on GWJ.

Ravelry has great software, but it's not really just one place. There are hundreds of sub forums over there, and there's only a few that I would call home.
GWJ is small enough that all the threads overlap to a certain extent, and the whole place can feel like home.

I like to consider myself your original sockpuppet.

I'll just go over to the depression thread then!
Besides GWJ being my one and only, I did spend about 4-5 years on the Rune forums. The original Rune hack and slash. The group was sometimes har do handle but mostly it was made up of fanatical Rune lovers and creators. The modding community was crazy and fun.
We are all still eagerly awaiting Rune 2 or an MMO of some sort.

Same.

I used to frequent a site called x-entertainment. This was run by a guy on the east coast named Matt who mostly wrote about pop culture nostalgia, Wildwood, infomercials, and other weird and wonderful things. For example, here is an article about oatmeal swirlers and another one about the video game Jaws.
But what lives on in my memory is the forum. It started out as a string of comments, literally, and then at some point Matt started to get something to host an actual forum (this changed at least twice). Then oddly.... hundreds of people flocked there (possibly thousands) and I was spending hours there a week.
One magical day, my then boyfriend decided to Female Doggo about me to some strangers on said forum. I, in my teenage wisdom, reacted exactly as you'd expect. We very publicly had our tantrum while hundreds of people spectated and mocked both of us.
That is entirely the reason that, what feels like eons later, I may have 5 years on this site and maybe a couple dozen posts max. The early internet was a harsh teacher and my trust in my own ability to speak intelligently to strangers is low.
I only joined GWJ because I met Cory back in the day and he told me I should join. It's been pleasant to be a lurker here, so thanks ya'll.
I've been active on Quartertothree for about 10 years. It's a pretty awesome place as a lot of developers and journalists hang out there. You get to read a lot of "behind the scenes" kind of stuff.
But it doesn't have nearly the community that this place does. The closest I can think of was Rich LaPorte's old site "Gone Gold." It kind of vanished over 10 years ago and it's a long-standing mystery what happened. Some think Rich's health issues just became too severe to maintain things. He was injured while on duty as a NYC cop and had some real pain and mobility issues. Anyway, one day it just vanished. I was very invested in that site and had done some writing for it as well. This was right after I left Computer Games Magazine, so it felt good to keep my writing muscles toned. I tried calling and emailing Rich a number of times, always without success. I never did find out exactly what happened, just a lot of rumors. I hope Rich is okay.
Anyway, that's the closest to GWJ.
Here's hoping you become more active Duchess! There are so many cool tags you could do with that name once you hit 1,000 posts! Gaming royalty!

I spent years reading that site, terrific commentary from Rich and the forums were busy and friendly. It was really strange how the entire thing ended and what exactly happened to Rich who shared his entire life story and daily struggles on the site and then pretty much disappeared one day without explanation. I spent some time on the sites spun off from gonegold but they weren't the same.
Despite my infrequent posting I've been reading this forum since the beginning of the site. I tend to ignore most forums and comment areas in general. This place is pretty much an anamaly when compared to most of the 'net.
Gone Gold was a template for GWJ in some ways. I was a (small) part of that community before GWJ happened and if you REALLY want to go back, the 3DFiles.com forums. If I remember correctly, the forum icons were an idea I lifted right from the Gone Gold forums.
