The whole bizarre incident involving Netanyahu claiming that Hitler was going to peacefully expel the Jews to Palestine and the Palestinians convinced him to kill them instead is precisely the kind of blood libel one spouts when you are getting geared up for a genocide of your own. Now it appears that the only folks that agree with him are neonazis.
You are judged by the company you keep.

The crazy thing is this does not seem to be getting much traction.
All we get is ZOMG Benghazi! Again and again and again...
Eh, I saw alot of push back on this. But I do think the bigger tragedy is that this is the type of thing that moves the conversational window in the wrong direction.
Wow, that... is super horrifying. What the hell.
I have a feeling things are pretty close to getting extra bad over there again. :/ I wish we were not involved, in no small part because nobody seems to have a realistic idea about what a truly workable peace for the region even looks like at this point, much less how to get there.

Well, we got pretty close before Netanyahu took over on the Israeli side. The problem at this point is Netanyahu has so thoroughly damaged the relationship with Palestine that those previous attempts at peace, while totally workable, are pretty much invalid too.
There's also been the inevitable growth of the far right and ultra-religious factions. There are now over 150,000 Israeli settlers within the Palestinian state, and every month that number grows. How much would it cost Israel simply to relocate them, never mind the social and political upheaval? That mitigates against a two state solution.
Then, you've got a lot more violence by Jews against other Jews, religious conservatives and nationalists attacking liberals and secularists. That's only going to grow.
It's bad, and while the violence may come and go, the situation will not get better while Netanyahu is in office. And the damage he can do in two years could turn out to be irreversible.
FWIW, here's something two historian friends of mine, one of Russia and one of Germany, posted the other day:
The crazy thing is this does not seem to be getting much traction.
I don't know about American media, but it was certainly covered on the BBC in the last 48 hours.

What do US consumers get from Israel that we could boycott?
LeapingGnome wrote:What do US consumers get from Israel that we could boycott?
Few of those boycott targets make sense. I mean are you literally going to boycott P&G because one of their brands has a tiny supplier who just so happens to be based in Israel? The only one that actually makes sense is Tribe and Sabra Hummus, but all of Israel's agricultural exports to the US amounted to a paltry $350 million.
If you want to boycott Israel then hit its biggest exports: diamonds, pharmaceutical products, electrical machinery, machinery, and optical and medical instruments. Boycotting those exports will eliminate about $18.5 billion from Israel's economy (that's about a third of its total export revenue and 6% of its GDP) without really impacting our economy in the least bit.
If you want to double-whammy them, then block US exports to Israel. Our economy would be out another $15 or $20 billion and Israel's GDP would shrink another 5% or so.
To put those economic hits into perspective the Great Recession was about a 4% contraction of the US economy.
Rather than make some pointless boycott to a company that maybe makes something in Israel, people should be calling or writing their representatives in government. It's likely to be as useless as a boycott, but if it isn't ignored, it has a higher chance of actually doing something about the money and support we funnel to Israel. Barring that, people could (in theory) vote for politicians who think that enabling the sort of behavior we see from Israel is a bad idea.
How do they export diamonds? There is no mine there.
How do they export diamonds? There is no mine there.
Just guessing, but I assume that they own diamond mines somewhere else. Which, also guessing, is the same way most diamond mines are operated.

I hope it's this, and not the stereotype that many people selling diamonds in the states are Jewish.
I don't purchase Israeli medical equipment. It's not really an action with an eye for change. It just makes me feel bad to buy something from an economy that's participating in genocide.
If a boycott leads to the end of companies like Outbrain and Taboola (both from Israel originally), count me in!

This, generally. My purchasing dollars aren't withheld expecting a change (although that would be nice). They're withheld so that I am not directly supporting something I despise. See: Orson Scott Card.
Oh here we go with the lies again.... there is no genocide going on in Israel, not even close. Please, stop with the lying and incitement. It's unjust, unfair and plain wrong.
I've already expressed my view on the settlements - those are questionable and should be part of a peaceful *negotiated* solution.
Currently there are no negotiations, as both sides don't seem particularly interested. Even though Netanyahu recently offered an unconditional return to the negotiations table - Abbas refused.
The boycott on Israeli companies will bring nothing but turning people who believe in a peaceful solution closer to Netanyahu's right-wing opinions, make them more defensive and will take peace farther away. BTW, no one is suggesting boycotting Palestinian terror organizations, which I find amusing.
If you really want to help, you need to pressure the US government to get the sides negotiating peace again. For f*ck sake, stop doing propaganda for the Palestinians and spreading lies. That really does no good.
Not only you are spreading lies based on a miserable statement (and yes, it was miserable), you are also completely ignoring facts and that Israel has been under a brutal attack by Palestinian terrorists in the past couple of months.
Mostly stabbing attacks on civilians but also running over with cars, molotov cocktails, rockets and shooting. It started with a drive by murder of two young parents in front of their four children, who were just returning home. Please tell me how this is self defense or a legitimate "resistance".
Just a few recent examples of Palestinian terrorists jump Israeli civilians simply for being Jews. All the attacks were carried out against defenseless civilians, in Israeli (unoccupied) territories:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d40m...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uwyr...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1jP...
The 1st video happened 5 min drive from where I was. It could have been me, my wife or my 1 year old son. What good would it do to the Palestinian cause? What good any of these murders do? Like it or not, we, like any other sovereign country will protect ourselves.
All of the recent attacks are not because of "occupation" but in the name of "protection" of Al Aqsa, the holy Palestinian temple in Jerusalem. Now, claiming that Israel is attacking Al Aqsa is as true as the genocide speculations and conspiracy theory above.... repeating a lie many times probably make it true in this case. This is honestly the most bullshit reason to start a terror wave, but hey, since when do the Palestinians need a reason to incite violence?
The propaganda is real. The brainwashing is real. The Palestinians are doing whatever they can to turn a political dispute into a religious war. Here is one peaceful religious leader preaching for peace. These are the freedom fighters you support:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOqP...
The worst thing is that those terrorists are victimized by the Palestinians. After every attack on Israelis, if the terrorist get shot - the Palestinians spread those pic on twitter and other media sources only showing the shooting by Israelis defending themselves, ignoring the terror act done by those people seconds ago.
The world media was caught playing along more than once, it's really sad.

Dude, the leader of your nation just suggested that a group of unrelated folks were responsible for the Holocaust. He quite literally used a past genocide as a political talking point against a current threat of his making. You talk about how you need peace talks. Nope. NO. If you pull my other leg it'll play Judas Priest. The biggest detriment and wall to talks right now is your country's leader and his sociopathic disregard for the lives and narrative of his enemy... which you're willing to just ignore because... reasons.
And... here you are JUSTIFYING that because a minority of the Palestinian population are violent (surprise, limiting access to food, medicine, transportation, but I mean, they're being allowed to live for now, they should be grateful)... and somehow still completely ignoring the Israeli responses that also feed into this cycle of violence and the Israeli government policy that's only working to increase these incidents.
Desperate Palestinian actions do not exist in a vacuum, stop presenting them as if they do.
BTW, no one is suggesting boycotting Palestinian terror organizations, which I find amusing.
You're conflating terrorist organizations with the state of Palestine (I'm willing to set that aside, as I'll concede that the boundaries between the government and terrorist organizations have been hazy at points). Even then, it's probably not a huge surprise that people without reliable sources of electricity turn out to not have a lot of export business that could be boycotted. [Edit to add: though, if you are aware of any Palestinian terrorist organizations who are exporting goods, let me know and I'll avoid purchasing those.]
Here is a full list of Palestinian terrorism only since September. Read it and think what would you do. That's insane!
Terror attacks by the numbers:

In terms of your prompt to "think what you would do", I'm of two minds here. The US is certainly capable of gross overreaction to threats (especially if they can be labelled as "terrorist" - for goodness' sake, we're still taking our shoes off in order to fly). But we're also surprisingly blasé about violence, generally - police have killed almost 200 people since September, and even an atrocity like Sandy Hook didn't precipitate meaningful gun control legislation.
I can't begin to imagine what it would be like to feel constantly in danger. I hope you and your family stay safe. I'm not convinced that any possible path forward is paved with violence, falsely claiming that Palestinians are responsible for the Holocaust, or more-broadly taking actions that make Palestinians feel like they have no stake in peace and nothing to lose.
I do agree with Paleocon that Israel is far more likely to make decisions that lead to long-term peace without the distorting influence of being a de-facto client state.
Guess what? Edit and quote aren't the same thing.
Here is a full list of Palestinian terrorism only since September. Read it and think what would you do. That's insane!
Terror attacks by the numbers:
53 Stabbings

I got halfway through September, tallying up terrorism against Palestinians, and realized that this exercise is pointless:
Shootings 21
Sponge/Rubber shootings 34 (these can cause serious injury and, in rare cases, death)
Vehicle strikes against people 1
General violence 44
Forced home evictions 1
Why pointless? Because this is a decades-old feud and both sides are basically saying to the world at large "they did X first!"
There's also the factor that Israel continues to conduct state terrorism against Palestinians, making it pretty much impossible to do a fair comparison of the numbers. Because then you get into all sorts of subjective bullshit about what is "terrorism" and what is "self-defense".
For reference that I'm not picking on Israel here, note that I've been just as harsh on US police forces conducting state terrorism against minorities in clashes in Baltimore, Ferguson, and elsewhere in recent years.
So yeah, you want to go with this line?
Oh here we go with the lies again
You need to be less blinded to the role your "side" is playing in this conflict. And make no doubt about it, this is a conflict. It's a war in all but name, and has been going on for decades now. My beef with Israel is that the actions of the nation demonstrate that they won't be satisfied until they've evicted the Palestinians and annexed Palestine into Israel by default.
The propaganda is real. The brainwashing is real.
No shit, Sherlock.
Why is is that you think that only applies to the side you're not on?
Because it is working?...
