Replacement for Lastpass

So Lastpass just announced they have been purchased by LogMeIn. I have no faith that they will retain their dirt-cheap premium/mobile subscription in the medium term, so I am looking for a replacement utility. Having a mobile (iOS) app is very important to me. Also, ease of importing from LastPass is also important.

Any suggestions?

That sucks. I just got around to setting up family shares this past weekend.

All I know off the top of my head is 1Password. Time to do some Googling I guess.

I've avoided centralized services for this sort of thing, so I've been using KeePass for a few years now. I can't promise ease-of-use is quite as good, but it's worked well for me.

I have my KeePass vault file on Dropbox, so I can get to it on all my PCs (actually Macs) and iOS devices. The Mac client I use is KeePassX, which works more gracefully on OS X than the standard KeePass client does. On iOS I use MiniKeePass, which has been around a while and works well. Only caveat is that when you update the KeePass file on the PC side, you need to manually push the new version from DropBox into MiniKeePass on iOS, and if you update the file on iOS, you need to export it back to DropBox.

I know the standard KeePass client does some form of password autofilling, but I've never really messed with that functionality -- I just copy-and-paste from the app into the browser as needed.

Not sure about importing from LastPass, but the standard KeePass client does say it supports the capability. Can't promise this is the best solution for you, but it works very well for me.

EDIT: It's KeePass, not KeepAss. I'd like to think autocorrect did that, and not my subconscious.

After some poking:

1. LastPass does have an export option.
2. LastPass has a 'cancel' account feature.
3. 1Password offers pay-once indefinite licenses. Total would be $60 for me: Windows + iOS.

I'll keep looking for others as I'm paid up with LastPass through April.

So, 1Password Chrome extension doesn't work for me... and syncing between iOS and Windows is inelegant and involves a third-party like Dropbox, which is a fail for me.

You can actually do a wi-fi sync from 1Password between Windows (or Mac OS X) and iOS, which I've been using since I don't really use Dropbox. It's not super intuitive, but has been working fine for me with both my iPhone and my iPad.

This is sad news.

I have been using 1Password for a while and like it very much. I've never had a problem with the browser plug-ins, and I paid a one-time fee instead of an ongoing subscription. Yes I use Dropbox for syncing between multiple computers and mobile, but I've never had a problem with it. It is pretty painless to setup and then runs invisibly.

So where do you keep the password for your Dropbox?

I like Dashlane quite a bit.

In the password file that's on Dropbox? This isn't a chicken-and-egg thing. Create the file with all your passwords (including the Dropbox pw) locally, then copy it into Dropbox and let it sync to everywhere you care about.

Pretty much. The database is local on the machine. 1Password has Dropbox integration so you don't have to 'copy' anything manually, just do the configuration and it syncs the database to Dropbox and then all of the other machines sync down from it, there is no manual updating anything. It all works pretty invisibly.

This has been my solution for over a year minus the DropBox bit. You can push the KeePass DB to Minikeepass on iOS via iTunes using the documents functionality in the Apps view of your iDevice in iTunes. I don't think I've needed to update the DB from inside iOS, so the PC DB is my master one and I try to sync it to my iDevices once a month unless I changed a password for something that I connect to regularly on my phone or tablet.

It's not as convenient as say LastPass, but it gets the job done.

I will stick with LastPass for a while (although I do print out my passwords now and then). I figure it's situation will become more clear over time, and I do like the product. And this will give other alternatives a chance to bubble up in the market.

I know many companies won't trust DropBox with their documents. I sure as heck would not put my passwords on it....

True but it is not like the password databases are in clear text. At least for 1Password, it is encrypted pretty decently.

I'd never put unencrypted passwords on DropBox, but the whole point of strong encryption is that it doesn't matter if the entire world gets their hands on your ciphertext (the encrypted file). You don't need to trust DropBox as long as you trust your encryption software and the strength of your passphrase. (And if you can't trust your encryption software, you're basically screwed anyway.)

I use 1Password and really like it. That said, the Mac and iOS apps are quite good, while the Windows app is kinda so-so (but improving). Also, while I think 1Password is supposed to sync via iCloud, I've only ever gotten it to work reliably via DropBox. Having to purchase the app separately on every platform can be a bit pricey as well.
