The Quarterly JRPG Club - Let's 'Grind' Down that Backlog!

I feel as though I have to make some deluxe high quality video. Or else just me in a room awkwardly dancing around a bingo cage as big as my hand, from the looks of the box.

Still waiting on what you guys think on how we should pick. I have the top picks, and I could go for the game with the shortest time for this quarter, per FastMav's suggestion, but they all seem long-ish. Maybe randomly pick anything with more than one vote? Revote on the games with the most / second most votes?

Thoughts would be appreciated. We've got to do a pick starting tomorrow night.

I think you should make an executive decision. Consider majority interest, length, and platform availability; but trying to come up with a scientific, repeatable, totally "fair" method is probably more trouble than it is worth.

Oh, the bingo ball decision has ruled as a sound, hilarious, and entertaining 'executive decision'.

Bingo cage bought :O

Dude, that's awesome!

Aaaaaand the bingo cage just sealed the deal for me. I have no other game suggestions or priorities, so I'll play whatever gets decided on. My only "vote" is in favor of the title being available on a portable system, as I'm far more likely to be able to participate if it's 3DS, Vita, or available on iOS.

Edit: To be clear, that would include PS1 games, etc. Basically anything playable on one of those devices

Something playable on a 3DS or Vita (which includes PS1 and DS titles, as well as a smattering of others) would be my preference too, for much the same reason. But whatever is decided, I will be aiming to participate if I can!

I am in, even if I have to buy my own Bingo cage to play.

Haha, you certainly can if you want! I think I will be doing the drawing tomorrow night. Going to look into how to stream live to Youtube tonight, and possibly give it a test run.

Interesting to see doogiemac's and Farscry's preferences... I'm the opposite, I don't do mobile devices, despite them being the primary home for RPGs these days. (At least we can all play PS1 classics and some cross-platforms.) I suppose it's inevitable that not all of us will be able to play every game every three months!

For me it's more about how much time I have access to the system. We only have one TV in the house, so I try to balance my time on it.

Yeah, if TV time/availability weren't an issue, I'd honestly prefer to play my jrpg's on a tv console. And I do still play those; it just takes me far longer to complete them since they require dedicated chunks of time, whereas my 3DS/Vita can more easily fit in a half hour here or there and then be put into sleep mode regardless of whether the game is saved or not.

Well. Here I am. So.

Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii)
Valkyria Chronicles (PC)
Final Fantasy IX (PS1)
Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time

---------------------- honorable pile games

Kingdom Hearts
Xenosaga Episode 3

Bingo cage. That's the only logical way to choose.

Final Fantasy XII (PS2)

Ooh, I'll happily use an excuse to replay this one too!

...and now we know why I have a backlog.

Here's how we're looking so far. This will be closing in two hours' time. I will probably try to do the drawing around 6pm EST tomorrow. It will be livestreamed on my Youtube Channel:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCme...

I plan on using the OBS software to do the broadcast and there will be some fun things going on. I anticipate the broadcast taking no longer than 5 minutes, but chances are it will sit on my channel long afterwards.

-Xenoblade Chronicles (6) - B1-B6
-Valkyria Chronicles (6) - B7-B12
-Persona Q (5) - B13-B15, I16, I17
-NIER (4) - I18-21
-Final Fantasy IX (4) - I22-I25
-Radiant Historia (3) - I26-I28
-Ni No Kuni (3) - I29, I30, N31
-Shin Megami Tensei IV (3) - N32-N34
-Suikoden (2) - N35, N36
-Final Fantasy XIII (2) - N37, N38
-SMT Devil Survivor / DS Overclocked (2) - N39, N40
-Atelier Totori: Adventurer of Arland (2) - N41, N42
-Hyperdimension Neptunia re;Birth, Vol. 1 (2) - N43, N44
-Fire Emblem.. something! (2) - N45, G46
-Disgaea 2-4 (2) - G47, G48
-Tales of Xillia (2) - G49, G50

I won't be able to catch it live, but will catch it as soon after as I can!

Totally forgot about Radiant Historia. I also have the World Ends With You, which I've just remembered.

My pile is out of control...

The bingo cage is such a silly idea. I love it.

We seem to have lost the systems each games is available for. Do we have that list somewhere?

I can list it out when chosen. I just wanted to have it on hand in case there was ever a question. Although I guess Wikipedia would do that

I guess I could look things up for myself, but that sounds like a lot of work.

Haha, are you curious about anything in particular? I was mostly just planning on listing out the chosen game (and all systems it's available for) once it's chosen.

So, how are you going to proceed with the bingo, exactly?

The way I see it, to select, say, Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii/n3DS), you would need to draw all the tokens for that game, so B1 to B6? Wouldn't that reduce the probability of this game being chosen though? But for, say, Tales of Xilia (PS3), you would only need to draw G49-50? I'm not a statistician (thankfully), but it looks to me like Tales is more likely to be picked than Xenoblade Chronicles, since it only uses two tokens instead of six?

Or did I get this completely wrong and I should go back and re-read the thread because you already explained all of that?

Nope! I don't know that it was explained. To avoid any confusion, we're not actually playing Bingo, I'm just using the cage as a means to perform a lottery of sorts. Basically, the number of votes that a game has gotten represents the number of balls in the cage. Higher-voted games will have a better chance of being chosen over other games. So right now, Xenoblade has a 6/50 (or 3/25) chance of being picked whereas other, lesser-voted games have a smaller chance.

The two 'test' draws last night were for Radiant Historia and FFXIII, so lesser-represented games are still able to win.

As a rule, I only put balls in for games with more than one vote (the cage only came with so many balls!)

Thanks, that makes perfect sense!

Another kind of neat idea - for the two more vague nominations (Disgaea and Fire Emblem) it might be cool that, if one of those wins, the player can choose which entry in the series they have to tackle.

Makes me wonder if we should keep this to a specific game entry in a series or just keep it to a series as a whole (any FF game you haven't finished.) Though I think keeping it to a series will lessen any conversation since people will be in different games.

This is the problem that I see with that approach. I expect people playing Disgaea 2 and Disgaea D2 would have fairly different experiences (in terms of the story at the very least), so that would kill the conversation, not to mention litter the thread with spoilers.

Yup, I'd like to keep it to the same game if possible, but we can have a reasonable disclaimer. For example:

If Fire Emblem Awakening is picked, but you don't have the game/system and a different Fire Emblem is on your backlog, then go ahead and play it. This way you still get the momentum of being part of the thread's goal of working on the backlog together, even if you're not playing exactly the same game.

Nah. I was just skimming the list and was just wondering which of the options I would have the ability to play. Just curiosity. No need to go out of your way.

Another possibility is for people to have some sort of input in games if others want to stream them. Could help play games together or keep people involved! Although that depends if it's on a device that is easily stream-able.

Good point! I like that idea. Keeps people in the loop. I have all the equipment but I'm not sure that I'm best prepared to stream on anything aside from PS4 or PC. If anyone wants to try their hand at streaming the monthly game (obviously depending on what it is) please volunteer!

Another admin thing: Should I create a new thread for each quarter, like SallyNasty is doing? I can have this be the main 'host' thread and split off for each game if that sounds reasonable.
