The Quarterly JRPG Club - Let's 'Grind' Down that Backlog!

I think I have most of the games listed in the backlog. I'm not sure this is a good thing...

Well I just f*cked up the video and the pick (the ball fell out but I made sure to grab it after it did) - and then I ran another pick just for fun, but both were EARTHBOUND!

So, apologies that there is no video because there is no audio on said video... but... EARTHBOUND yay hooray weeeeeeeeeeeee

Yay! Something I own!

Aaaand here's the link to the new thread.

Hurray! And I was already planning on finishing this in January!

Dag-naggit! Not up for going through Earthbound again, so I'll sit this one out. Maybe Q2 will swing my way hahaha

With fewer purchases in 2017 I am hoping to take part in this more next year.

That and I'm already several many hours into Wild Arms 3 so totally down for tossing votes that way next time.

Doh! I don't own that one so I'll have to sit out. I'll check back in Q2.

Cool. In.

Tricky. I do have Earthbound. As a JRPG fan in a country where the SNES version was never available, I felt honour-bound to grab it as soon as it appeared on the Wii U virtual console. Nothing has made me want to play it, either in the years before that purchase or after. Probably because I've not seen a fan explain why they like it instead of iterating how much they like it.

I might see if I can fit it in during February. Can't promise though.

I'm out for Earthbound but enjoy guys it's a great game, really cool music in it and cute story.

I'm staying out of this one as I've played through it twice and am not feeling like doing it once more any time soon, especially after having played Mother 3 back in 2011 (iirc), which is the best game in the series, but let me see if I can help you out.

The game, stylistically, can be boiled down to Americana as seen through the lens of a Japanese Advertising savant and put through a JRPG transmogrifying machine. The graphics at the time were unique in character, though they have since influenced a great many games and so that particular aspect of their charm may be lost on people visiting the game for the first time today. It remains, visually, a beautifully unique experience on the SNES.

Gameplay-wise, it's pretty standard JRPG with magic substituted by Psychic energy and weapons of the fantasy veneer changed for baseball bats and yo-yos and other standard American child tools (since the protagonists are children). The actual battles have a hidden or not-so-hidden system where pressing the buttons to the beat of the battle music can produce beneficial effects such as increased damage to enemies.

The story is pretty off the wall for an SNES game and is humorous enough to entertain. The entire world, character, and enemy design reflects the off-beat nature of it. There's some very interesting imagery and symbolism in the latter stages and has thought provoking themes underneath if you pay close attention, making it work on a more subtle level if that sort of thing tickles your fancy.

Since you own it, I'd say give it a whirl and spend some 2-3 hours to see if it catches your attention.

I need to know why it's $10 on 3DS eShop when all other SNES games are $8?

Because they can. It launched at $10 on the Wii U eShop because it was a rarity at the time. They apparently decided to keep that price on the 3DS. Jerks.

Do you have any gold coins in My Nintendo? You can get a 30% discount on EarthBound on either Wii U or 3DS for 20 gold coins.

Mother 3 was fantastic up to the point where you need to find crystals to save the world (20-30 hours in?), then it became standard JRPG tedium. I dropped it after that so I wouldn't hate the entire experience.

That system was added into Mother 3's combat but, as far as I'm aware, is not present in EarthBound proper. If it is, I'm gonna need to see some citation because I have no clue where you'd do that button pressing, unless it was for inputting commands.

And that would just suck.

Ah. Yes I think I have 40 coins from something. That could be nice.

You are correct. My memory failed there. It was the roll system in Earthbound, where when you inflict damage the numbers roll and you can get different effects from it.

Yup, which I wrote about here three years ago and whose comment section is an interesting read now.

It's still cheaper than trying to find a physical version on eBay or Amazon.

Also, there's some licensing issues arising from use of Salvador Dali art and the extensive sampling done by the music team, so a higher than normal price tag might be part of that.

Yeah it's not in Mother 2 / Eathbound. In Mother 3 you start tapping to the beat when the character starts the attack animation.

That's not quite how it worked. Your HP and MP "meters" are basically old-school gas pump readouts that tick down when you take damage. So if you're fast you can sometimes clear a fight after taking mortal damage and still survive.

Thank you. That's much better than anything else I've seen.

If I can get a fair view of the game in 2-3 hours I'll give it a go. If I like it I'll join the thread. If not I'll skip this quarter and cull the game from my pile. I'm still quite unsure what I'll make of it; Americana isn't something I typically get much out of.

So, is it too soon to start discussing and nominating things for the next quarter?

Well, I say no!

So here are my nominations:

  • NieR (as usual)
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter
  • Child of Light
  • Shining Force
  • Parasite Eve

Most of them are fairly short (with the exception of Trails in the Sky).

Nice! I'll start taking recommendations soon. I was thinking about this too.

My noms are going to be PC/handheld focused because there's no way in hell i'm getting the TV come April

My nomination is I Am Setsuna since it's on PS4/PC/Switch and odds are the folks in this thread have at least one of those, right?

.....right?

I might actually buy Setsuna if it wins. Although doesn't that defeat the purpose of these game clubs? Hmm... Well, it's on my 'to-buy eventually' list, so I guess it counts as backlog...

Drakengard 3
Tokyo Mirage Sessions

Oh Tokyo would be my choice or An Ys game

I need some motivation to go back and finish Tokyo Mirage, so that would be my choice! (but probably not applicable since it's Wii U only)

I don't think there are any platform limits for this game club.
