Hi everyone!

Welcome to the Quarterly JRPG Club, kupo!

So, here's the plan:

1. A few posts down, we have a running list (thanks to our members) of games we'd like to see completed! Each quarter, users will be given five (5) votes each to spend on these choices, or to add a new game to the list. Based on the number of votes each game has at the deadline, a cutoff will be put into place. (This is based on how many Bingo Balls I have.) Games above that cutoff will have one Bingo Ball placed into the Bingo Cage per vote. We run the lottery and we play the game that gets picked!

2. The game (regardless of how long) will be spread out over the course of 3 months. Check-in points will be based on walkthroughs. I will look into a numbered/lettered walkthrough and, for example, during Month 1, we will progress from walkthrough chapters A to F. Month 2 = Chapters G to L, Month 3, M to R. Obviously you do not have to follow the walkthrough, but I will list the location or event (probably in a spoiler tag) closest to where you should stop.

3. I really like the site www.howlongtobeat.com and I will be using this as a reference for game length. I will most likely be dividing that average time by 3, which will let you know how far along you should play before you stop each month.

4. The category for eligible games is pretty flexible - it could either be made by / published by a Japanese developer / company, or a non-Japanese, turn-based / homage to JRPGs.

Thanks!

UPDATE: For Q1 2016, we will change how we're doing this in a minor way. We will be casting 5 votes. You can choose to vote for games that are already in the list, or vote for new games which are not. Anything new will be added, and anything in the list will have a vote counter next to it. This determines how many bingo balls get deposited into the bingo cage for the lottery at the end.

Here's where we stand (12/1)

Final Fantasy X-2 (6)
Resonance of Fate (5)
NIER (5)
Suikoden (5)
Etrian Odyssey / Untold (4)
Child of Light (4)
Tales of Xillia (4)
Final Fantasy X (3)
Persona Q (3)
Xenoblade Chronicles (3)
Atelier Totori (3)
Suikoden II (3)
Xenoblade Chronicles X (3)
Radiant Historia (2)
Eternal Sonata (2)
Tactics Ogre (2)
Recettear (2)
Final Fantasy XII (2)
SMT IV (2)
Legend of Legacy
Hyperdimension Neptunia Vol 1
Disgaea 2
Earthbound
Blue Dragon
The World Ends With You
Rune Factory 4
Demon Gaze
Black Rock Shooter
Ys: Memories of Celceta
Gurumin
Kingdom Hearts II
Persona 3
Final Fantasy VII
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
Persona 4
Tales of Symphonia
South Park: The Stick of Truth
Final Fantasy IX
Dragon Quest VIII
Bravely Default
Final Fantasy XIII

I love the idea! I have pretty much every console under the sun (except the Xbox One), and I used to buy almost every JRPG that was coming out...

  • Any Disgaea (PSP/Vita/PS3) except 1 (which I've already beaten) and 5 (which I don't plan on buying just yet)
  • Earthbound (SNES/Wii U)
  • Any Persona game (PS1/PS2/PSP)
  • Koudelka (PS1)
  • Star Ocean First Departure (PSP)

There's a link to my Backloggery in my signature, so pretty much anything I have not beaten is fair game.

It's a cool idea, but I won't be participating because I already have a priority list of what I'm playing

Perfect header, though!

EDIT:

I might as well throw in my upcoming JRPGs. Not including Persona 4 and Kingdom Hearts ReChain because I'm nearly done with them, and not including FFXIV because MMO.

Kingdom Hearts II ReMix
Persona 3 FES
Final Fantasy IX
Persona Q
Xenoblade Chronicles

Tagging for potentially joining in in the future

Dropping my Top 5 in:

Radiant Historia (DS)
Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World (Wii / PS3)
South Park: Stick of Truth (multi)
Final Fantasy IX (PSX)
Lunar: Silver Star Story (PSX)

And I'll add a top 5 -

Hyperdimension Neptunia re;Birth, Vol. 1
Tales of Xillia
Ni No Kuni
Nier
Persona Q

Leaving bobbywatson's 'series' picks open until someone else calls one specific entry out. Unless we're looking to do them in order, though I don't know that Disgaea has any real plot that carries over much, and Persona is fairly self-contained.

Neat idea. I've only really got SNES access at the moment. Though if I've got until October to fix that I could probably reclaim my PS3 too. Oh, and I've got a mostly ignored 2DS.

Top 5:
Legend of Dragoon
Suikoden
Suikoden 2
Arc The Lad 2
Other thing? ... Fire Emblem maybe?

Yeah, this interests me as well.

Radiant Historia (DS)
Shin Megami Tensei VI (3DS) - yes, I'm a horrible person, I got a ways in and then got sidetracked
NIER (PS3/360) - similar issue; what makes this a tough candidate is that I don't regularly get lengthy time on the TV for rpg's lately; my heavy gaming is PC, portable, and Wii U titles that can be played off-TV.
Legend of Mana (PS1) - I've started this one so many times and always sputter out before long. I can't figure out what makes me do that other than feeling like I've f*cked up the map layout so much there's no point in continuing.

I don't have a jrpg backlog necessarily so I have no suggestions, but I think I'd be interested in participating occasionally depending on the game.

JRPGs are one of those categories that I have little experience with, but I've always wanted to play more of. I have a PS3, PS4, and Vita (plus maybe access to a 3DS) so if the game is on one of those I'll try to join in.

Updated - a couple have two votes now. How about we give it until next Friday to cast votes? That will ensure that people have plenty of time to start in next weekend if they want to!

I really love the idea and would also LOVE to participate, but hoo boy...Even with a quarterly club I don't think I'd be able to make a dent in some of my backlogged JRPGS.

That being said, I can toss in a top 5:

Atelier Totori: Adventurer of Arland (PS3)
Valkyria Chronicles (PS3)
The Last Story (Wii)

...actually I'm just going to go with these. I can't think of any other ones on my backlog that haven't already been mentioned before.

Nice. JRPGs, since they usually take me three months of dedicated play, are largely responsible for my backlog but would fit nicely into your quarterly plan. I wouldn't mind replaying some in a group, and there are a few I have my eye on... most consoles are good for me (PS2, PS3, PS4, 360, WiiU) but I do not have any of the mobile devices many JRPG makers target.

Tales Of Xillia 2 (PS3) is the only "pressing" one I have left.
Nier (360) I gave up on but could go back to.
Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii) I gave up on but might go back to if done before Xenoblade Chronicles X comes out.

The (re?-)release of hardcover guides for Final Fantasy 7 through 12 (PS1-PS3) has me interested in revisiting some of them (seeing two votes for Final Fantasy IX, I would throw in a vote for that if I can even thourgh I already played it), and the remastered version of Tales Of Symphonia (PS3) also really appeals to me. (I keep hearing "Dawn Of the New World" is awful, though, sadly.) I always associate Parasite Eve (PS1/PS3) with Christmas.

There's a good chance Tales Of Zestiria (PS4) and The Legend Of Heroes (PS3) are going on my pile in October and November. I suspect Xenoblade Chronicles X (WiiU) might grab my attention after its release in early December. So, my pile is definitely going to be more sizable in a few months...!

Double voting for double pleasure.

Oh what a backlog I have. Here are a few:

Persona Q
Valkyria Chronicles
Radiant Historia
Dragon Quest VIII
Devil Survivor Overclocked

The shame, the shame.

I have faaaar too many to list, but if whatever you pick is a game that I already have, consider me in!

(with the caveat that I do have quite a hefty amount of homework eating away at my free time at the moment, but I'll do my best )

That's my position as well. I'm not going to buy a game to add it to the pile to help decrease the pile

(That's what I have Persona 5 and Dancing All Night for!)

Suikoden I (PS1/PSP/Vita/PS3)
Demon Gaze (Vita)
Child of Light (Vita,PS3,360,PS4,XB1,PC)
Ys: Memories of Celceta (Vita)
Gurumin (PSP/Vita)

Hey beepo, I'd love to play FFIX too, but I'll stick to the rules I made, so I won't be counting your vote for it. Looking like we have some good picks here though!!

Ooh, I'd love to get back into Ni No Kuni. A group chat might pull me through some of the more grindy sections. Might participate for other games too, depending. Valkyria Chronicles is a great pick (I'm almost through a second run going for S ranks, but my copy's on loan...).

I'd love to jump in here as I have always loved JRPGs and it's hard to find the dedication for one these days. My current platform availability is PS1/PS2/PS3, Vita, DS, and PC, although I am thinking of picking up a PS4 sometime in the future.

Top 5 Backlog:
Final Fantasy XIII (PS3)
White Knight Chronicles (PS3)
Ni No Kuni (PS3)
Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii)
Recettear (PC)

Others owned:
Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1 (PC)
Fortune Summoners (PC)
Ys 1 Chronicles (PC)
Ys 2 Chronicles (PC)
Ys Origins (PC)
Ys The Oath in Felghana (PC)
Agarest: Generations of War (PC)
Child of Light (PC)

ActualDragon, want me to count those as your votes?

Yeah, sorry I wasn't clear. Those are my votes, even if I don't get to play along with Valkyria I love talking about it.

This is probably my main hitlist, although I'm not totally sure how much I'll participate since I've got a bunch of games in the backlog and I don't know if I could really keep up with the pace to complete one in 3 months.

NIER (PS3)
Lost Dimension (PS3)
Final Fantasy XIII (PS3) (Really any of the PS2/PS3 era FF games)
Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS)
Bravely Default (3DS)
Persona Q (3DS)
Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii)

I think that's basically everything that's been on my priority list or games I put time into and was pulled away from by something shinier.

Yeah, put me down for the devil survivor games and Persona Q too, I really should get to those sometime.

I was planning on digging into Tales of Zestiria (sorry if that's made any of you think: "oh no, I have to play that as well!") when it comes out next month, but I can get on board with this!

Here's my top 5:

1. Tales of Vesperia (PS3/Xbox 360)
2. Persona Q (3DS)
3. Grandia II (PC/PS2/Dreamcast)
4. Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS)
5. Xenoblade Chronicles (3DS/Wii)

Updated! Shoptroll, I skimmed the top 5 from the list you gave and left off the others.

I kinda grouped them by system, but it's not like Persona Q needs more votes either so that's ok by me

I ought to take my vote off Persona Q since I'm not actually playing that until I play P3...
