Signs of progress

This is the thread for reporting incremental or large steps forward (I'm sure we'll all agree on what counts as a step forwards) in policy and attitudes. For example:

The Cub Scout promise used to be:

I promise that I will do my best
To do my duty to God and to the Queen
To help other people
And to keep the Cub Scout Law.

The new alternative wording is:

On my honour, I promise that I will do my best
To uphold our Scout values, to do my duty to the Queen,
To help other people
And to keep the Scout Law.

For Brownies (the youth arm of the Girl Guides) I saw this in a village hall:

I promise that I will do my best
To be true to myself and develop my beliefs
To serve the Queen and my community
To help other people
And to keep the Brownie Guide Law

It looks like a belief in God isn't being taken as a given. Here is an accompanying piece of text from the Scout website:

Alternative Promise

Scouting is available to people of all faiths as well as people who are humanist, atheist or have no affirmed faith and therefore must take account of the different religious obligations or non religious beliefs of its Members.

Similarly, people of other nationalities resident in the United Kingdom, who may become Members of the Association, owe allegiance to their own Country. To meet these circumstances, there are different variations of the Beaver Scout, Cub Scout and Scout Promise that can be made, allowing for the individuals obligations while upholding the essential spirit of the Promise.

Ubisoft are changing the text at the start of the Assassin's Creed games.

"Inspired by historical events and characters, this work of fiction was designed, developed, and produced by a multicultural team of various beliefs, sexual orientations and gender identities."

Nice!

US Boy Scout Oath (or Promise)

On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.

And if you want to learn more about what American scouting thinks, here's their Baden-Powell quotes page. Out of 4 quotes posted on the official site, three of them directly reference service to God as the over-arching principle of Scouting, and two of them directly reference the Kingdom of God on Earth.

I had a sense that the US scouts were more staunchly God focused.

Btw, there is no live link in your post as, I think, you intended Robear.

Fixed, thanks Greenie.

Yeah, Boy Scouts of America are still :l Girl Scouts, OTOH, kick major ass and have for a long time.

A few months ago, Pope Francis and the Curia demoted the highest-ranked American Cardinal because of his hateful views towards LGBT people:
