Train Simulator games

My 4 year old is obsessed with all things trains, and he's starting to show an interest in video games. Are any of the various train games/simulators good for him to watch me play? Or will they be extremely boring?

Pop him in front of some videos of Train Sim 2016 or any of the others and see if he likes them. Adults do; don't see why kids would find them boring...

My 3 y/o really enjoys "the train game", Train Simulator. About once a month or so he'll request it, and we'll sit down and drive some trains. He enjoys checking out the different views, hitting the space bar to honk the horn, and checking out RR crossings and tunnels as we chug along. I can leave him alone with it for a few minutes, but he will get bored, and then we'll go on and do something else.

Expect lots of time picking engines, cars, maps, and weather. Then, after chugging for less than 30 seconds, having the kiddo request a different setup.

There's a christmas setup, look for Richie Rails in their store, that has maps of a living room and a snowed over yard. The trains are set up to look like model christmas trains, with no interior view, and are much more sensitive to controls. Unfortunately very easy to derail, so you really have to pay attention to your speed.

Other than the Christmas train, I've avoided the rest of the DLC. That stuff is spendy. $40 for the Marias Pass scenery package that I would honestly enjoy trying out.

Edit: If you have a copy of RR Tycoon III, maybe see if they're interested in that. Laying the track, and building your own lines might be more interesting. You can zoom in the camera to on top of the engine, like you're riding along.

It's worth noting that Train Simulator goes on deep discount during every Steam holiday sale. We're talking $5 or so dollars for the base game. I think it's a ploy to get people into the TS ecosystem for all those potential DLC sales.

The franchise is legit awesome, but it might be worth waiting. And as Druidpeak mentioned, they're starting to release annual holiday-themed DLC at the same $5 featuring toy tracks for Halloween and Christmas.

Thanks all. 5$ is a perfect price point for trying it out. I'll wait until it comes up.

I find the Train Simulator to be too "realistic". You genuinely have to sit there and drive from one station to another in real time, where this may take hours. I would suggest finding a different simulator "on the cheap."

I play a train simulator at work every day. Mostly because my job is to write central control software for metro systems.

Dovetail, developers of Train Simulator, are working on another train sim called Train Sim World. It's an Unreal 4 based game, and looks pretty good. They had a deal earlier this month where if you owned specific routes on their earlier Train Simulator, that would get you into the 12 day long Beta for Train Sim World, which is happening now. I didn't know about Train Sim World until yesterday, so I missed out. Here's the lets play video where I discovered this new one.

My son is going to go nuts when he sees this. Looks to be set for release in 2017.

That looks mighty fine.

You can walk outside & around the trains. And the fidelity looks really sweet.

I can see this in my future.
