Pokemon Go ARG by Niantic (a Google company)

Pages

I don't know much about this yet but it's being made by Niantic. The makers of the Google game, Ingress.
Looks like it could be good, but I don't expect it to be anything like what we see in this amazing video!

Ever since learning about Augmented/Alternate Reality Games I've said that Pokemon would make a really good one. Definitely excited for it. Will be interesting to see how they incorporate in-app purchases and if there's interplayability with the 3DS games or even the WiiU.

I got a lot of feels from that video. Combining your smart mobile device to Pokemon is ingenious.

However, I am terrified about the inevitable fremium aspect of the game. I don't know if I can control myself and not purchase that $25 Masterball... After all, you don't get many chances to catch Mew!

I clicked on this because I thought it was a Pokemon Themed board game for mobile like Lara Croft and Hitman. Now I'm bummed.

Apparently someone at Squenix Montreal thought the same...

I am tentatively interested in the game from a conceptual standpoint, but would like to see how it actually plays because that video did nothing for me.

Cool concept I'll probably not ever try more than once.

This is probably what's going to happen. However, if they do integrate it with the games and let me take around my Pokemen from the cloud and transfer new ones back, it could be pretty great. Though, they'd probably have to adjust the numbers. I can handle a lv 70 Mewtwo blindfolded, but a lv 700 one might take a crowd.

I feel like this alone justifies something like Google Glass. Imagine how cool it would be to actually see them, and not have to hold up your phone. I'm not saying I would spend that kind of money on google glass for this, but who am I kidding? I totally would. Especially if other games follow suit.

Now I am looking forward to gangs of middle aged people wearing scouters yelling at one another over their invisible friends...

So another day in Portland.

It's all fun and games until some neck beard/leg beard makes some kid cry.

I thought that was Pokemon in general.

Gameplay details have been released. Nothing too surprising, basically what you would expect from a Pokemon ARG with some Ingress-style node defense (gyms).

In other words, if you live in the Midwest (outside of a few notable cities), the AR part of the ARG won't really be worthwhile. Meh, that's what I was expecting.

This is just Google softening us up before they release the genetically engineered Pokemon they've been developing in their underground labs into the world.

Not just the midwest, basically anywhere that's not really urban. I tried to play Ingress a while ago, but stopped because there really weren't any nodes around me. Basically, being anywhere that forces you to drive from place to place rather than walking kind of breaks these real-location games.

Apparently this is rolling out now in some countries. US and Japan not fully operational just yet or something.

There's a reddit thread for getting around the region locking, but I'm not entirely sure I'd download workarounds. Those of you more brave than I -

The beta app updated to the full app for me last night, and it launched this morning, but I only had enough time to get my starter. It seems like their servers are super busy, cause it took me 5 times just to try and choose my username.

Was there an announcement that the app was going live?

What an interesting idea.

I've got 8,000+ geocache finds, so these types of games are intriguing to me. I tried Ingress a few times and a lot of geocachers really like it, but it didn't click for me. I was chatting with a geocaching friend this morning after I saw this and she said that a lot of Ingress players she knows tried the beta for this and really liked it.

For sure, this seems much like Ingress in that you need some sore of urban sprawl to get enough nodes and a critical mass of players.

Regarding the "driving to play" issue, I both agree and disagree. If you "just go play" then the driving is a pain, but games like these are often really good for fitting in a few minutes when you're going about your everyday activities. So if you're out doing errands, you can check to see what's nearby, and go play for a few minutes. For longer sessions, it's better to drive to one place that has a large number of interactions, play for a couple of hours, then go do something else.

Pokemon GO launches today.

Sweet, thanks for that Godzilla.

So, I know there aren't really clans, but there are 4 teams, kind of like the two side in Ingres. Should we all agree to one? Options are the primary colors: Red, Green, Blue, Yellow.

Green isn't a primary color. I think for that very reason we should pick Green and remind Skylar of this huge and embarrassing mistake

Make a group called Campaigning For Primary

People will think it's something else, but we will know.

It turns out that an app with a specified availability date appears on an international App Store roughly at midnight in the store’s local time zone. So New Zealand will have a 16-hour head start on the United States.

Looks like the NA region will be getting access later tonight. Also, from the reddit thread:

What if this is a test to weed out players that didn't see the first episode of Pokemon? Ash stays up all night hyped up for his adventure and then sleeps in too late causing Gary to get a head start.
Yeah, and then he got the defective pokemon.

I'm game for all joining the same team. My pokemon type game experience is restricted to Pocket Mortys, but I played enough Ingress to hit level 8 (which used to be max level... lol).

I find that it is most useful when stuck in a line or waiting at an airport, but your mileage may vary. I live in an area that requires driving for Ingress, but I still travel enough to be downtown in some random city with a lot of portals. I don't actively play, I play when I am somewhere I am not normally at and I'm not concerned about battery life... which seems to be an issue with Pokemon Go as well.

So different places are hosting the APK for it. I have caught 5 while sitting here at my desk. I am all for going for the same Team. I do hope they expand to have clans/guilds/gyms or whatever else they would call a shared interest group/

Well, Green was floated on account of some silly reasons, but I'm on board with Green for Goodjers. Thoughts?

Wait, don't you actually have to go somewhere to catch them? How do you catch them at your desk? Do they deliver?

manta173 wrote:

Is there any reason to all joining the same team if we're in different parts of the country?

Some geocaching friends and I are all going to give it a shot, and we are going Red.

I think there are only three choices: Red, Blue, Yellow. So if we want green, half of us will have to pick blue and the other half yellow.

I'm not actually level 5 yet so I could be wrong. But you're right, there isn't really any benefit to us being on the same team if we aren't going to be in the same area. But it could be fun. Lysias and I are soulmates in a past life in the same area, so when we talked about what team to join, I brought the discussion here.
