Mattress recommendations

We're in the market for a new mattress. We'd like to keep it under or around $1000.

Any recommendations?

I've heard good things about Casper.

Is space an issue?

I <3 my Casper. We've had it a bit over a year, on pneuman and katisu's recommendation. It's kept its shape, is incredibly comfortable, while also being good for back support, and isn't too hot.

If you do decide to get one, and they still have a referral plan going, PM me - they had a thing where we each get $50 for the referral.

I don't have a specific one to recommend, but if you get one at a store, haggle that thing down like you're buying a used car. When I got mine, the sticker price was $1000. I got it for $600 including free delivery and haul away. The salesman even did the "I'll have to call my manager" thing in the middle of negotiations. Apparently this is pretty common.

No, and it should not be a chair.

Oh and King size, should have mentioned that before.

I ended up buying a mattress on Amazon. The DynastyMattress New Cool Breeze 12-Inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress

I have to admit that I was very hesitant to purchase a mattress online. After going to some stores to check out the gel memory foam mattresses and comparing what I would pay through Amazon vs. what the store was charging, I figured I had nothing to lose. Luckily the thing is amazing. We have only owned the mattress for 4 months now but neither my wife or I have had any issues (soreness, waking up during the night, etc ...). We both sleep really well on it.

To each their own but I highly recommend the DynastyMattress.

One comment I have about gel memory foam mattresses is that over time, if you sleep in one section of the bed every night, a pocket will form there that will be less "foamy". Or maybe the word is "supporty". No big deal if you aren't prone to back issues.

So that DynastyMattress looks like it's a Parklane mattress re-branded from last generation, which makes sense since Parklane's mattresses are typically sold under other names. I love my Parklane and will recommend it to anyone. Might be a good idea to look for a reseller like DynastyMattress who has a store where you can try out the same mattress, just different branding. Here is Parklane's website: http://parklanemattresses.com/

Good to know! I may be in the market, in the coming months, and that mattress seems to get some pretty solid reviews.

I bought a king size casper about 6 months ago and love it. It took a little bit of getting used to coming from a pillow top mattress. You have 90 days to try it and send it back if you don't like it.

I got some other brand of latex mattress a little more than a year ago. So far it's been great! I'd tried innerspring, memory foam, and air mattresses before that, and so far latex has been the best experience.

We have had a sleep number bed for 2.5 years now and absolutely love it, my wife can sleep the night without waking up with hip pain.

Like DeThroned, I bought my mattress on Amazon. I went with the 10-inch Sleep Innovations. The mattress is amazing. All the reviews are right on and the price was great (even free Prime shipping!). I've been sleeping on it since January 2012.

I went with one from Tuft & Needle (also bought through Amazon) not too long ago and instantly got rid of some of my problems with getting up in the morning and falling asleep at night. It's been excellent.

From what I could tell from my research before buying, there's just a lot more great options now for a mattress than there's probably ever been before.

Question for everyone, box spring or mattress only on a platform bed?

I got a Leesa mattress recently and have been quite satisfied.

Depends on the mattress, but with the Casper, it's mattress only.

I have only used mattresses on the platform beds I have owned.

haha this is the description for that mattress:

Has bounce for night activities and easy of getting in and out of bed, with localized movement that prevents disturbing sleep partners

That's really been my experience with traditional mattresses as well though. Desipite flipping it and stuff, our last mattress eventually had soft sections where we slept on it for several years.

Mattress selection is a pretty personal thing. My sister hated her sleep number bed, and now she's hating the memory foam mattress that they're using. Apparently after trying everything, she's going back to a traditional bed. I like my memory foam mattress, but I'm unable to sleep on my stomach with it. It's a back/side sleeper for me for sure. Sometimes it's a bit on the firm side at the shoulder area for some reason when side sleeping.

We went with 12" of the same and have been very happy as well.

I was a little nervous about buying a mattress online but after spending way too much time here: Sleep Like the Dead. I was convinced to pull the trigger.

Due note that if you get a bed via Amazon, you will need to haul your old mattress off by yourself and they recommend that the new mattress breathes and isn't slept on for a day or two.

We bought a Tuft & Needle a couple of weeks ago. It has been decent for me, but my wife says it is too firm even with a pillow topper on top. The Sleep Like the Dead site says it is medium firm to firm, which I'd agree with. We're going to end up returning it, luckily we didn't get rid of our old regular spring mattress yet. Not sure what to try next, instead of a king I think we are going to have to end up with two twin XLs, a soft one for her side and a firmer one for my side.

If anyone else is interested in one, I think it is comfortable, is a good price and seems like a good company. It also runs cooler than our old spring mattress, which I was surprised at because you always hear how the foam ones are hot, but not this one. I recommend buying directly through their website instead of Amazon because then you have a 100 day return period.

Yeah I bought through Amazon before I realized the difference in return period. I read some about their 100 day return policy. If you don't want to keep it you call them and they just send somebody to come get the mattress. No messing with shipping tags or calling a shipping company or anything. They just handle it. People generally seemed really impressed and didn't hesitate to recommend trying the mattress even though it didn't work out for them personally. Was part of what sold me. Of course then I bought through Amazon and was a little nervous when I found out my return period was a notably shorter, but it all worked out.

And ditto on it being surprisingly cool to sleep on. I still don't have A/C and summers here are usually a kind of long form torture when it comes to trying to get comfortable in a bed. I've slept better this summer than I have any summer in as long as I can remember.

Curious if anyone has any more suggestions. I am thinking about giving a shot to the Casper mattress. I figure with the generous return policy, I have nothing to lose.

I've gotta replace my mattress soon because it's completely shot. I like a lot of the Amazon options but my son used to have one of those memory foam mattress in a box things and that sucker was as stiff as a board to me and I thought it was horrible. That experience has left me a little anxious over buying another mattress in a box despite their claims that they're soft.

I'm solidly in the old school springs/pillow topper mattress archetypes. I'd say head to your local Ikea, assuming you have one, and hit up their mattress department. All quality stuff, and the prices are, like everything else at Ikea, awesome.

Leesa pretty dope tho.

If you want a firm mattress then I recommend Tuft and Needle. I love my bed and they're shipped similar to Casper.

I skimmed Futon with a memory foam topper.

I got my daughter a Casper twin and there's been no complaints. I'll probably replace my son's twin with one too. Not sure about the king in the master bedroom, we'll see.

I didn't even see this thread but I purchased a Leesa mattress online the other day. Still waiting for it to arrive. I like that I have 100 days to try it and return it if I don't like it. It's hard to find reviews online that don't come off as shady. I will post back here after we've used it for a while to let people know.
