Hello, Shalalm Baskur, and welcome to the first GWJ Rocket League Hat Tournament!
What is a hat-tournament, you might ask? No, no, it's not a tournament for fancy hats. Nor is it a tournament for Goodjers wearing fancy hats. Though, if you want to wear a fancy hat as you play, feel free. Rather it is a tournament where all participants' names are put into a hat and teams are drawn at random from those names.
I thought this might be a good way for the growing number of Goodjers playing Rocket League to get together, play rocket-powered-car future soccer with each other, and have a good time. All skill levels are welcome!
Since the games are pretty short, I figure we could do a nice little tournament (group stage and championship bracket) in an evening. For this first tournament, it's PC only. I'm not sure we can mix and match PC and PS4 players on the same teams at this time. I think it's something that Psyonix is working on, though.
Tournament Setup
Date: Saturday, September 12, 8:00 PM EST (Sunday, September 13 12:00 AM GMT, 7:00 PM JST)
4v4
Groups of 3 teams (12 players total)
Depending on the number of players this might be tweaked a bit.
For all participants, please self asses your skill level. We'll have two levels: Red Shirts and Jedi. So, for example, myself, I am at Pro level in game, and even though I'm self deprecating and say I'm not so good cause I still suck at aerials and make bonehead defensive plays, I have a decent read of the game so I'd say I'm a Jedi level. Try to be fair, so that the teams aren't uneven. Depending on numbers, I hope to have 2 Red Shirts and 2 Jedi per team, though this might change depending on the numbers.
In the group stage, teams will play each other twice, taking the aggregate score at the end of those two games (essentially a first and second half). If the aggregate score is tied, then a third game will be played, fist goal wins (essentially a sudden death overtime).
Teams will be ranked by wins, goal differential, goals for, and goals against.
All teams will make the championship bracket. The bracket is single elimination.
The champion will be crowned “Rocket League Furiosa.”
I am working on a design for a woodblock print for tournament. The champs will be mailed a postcard with the design, their name, team name, and tournament date, to commemorate their victory.
Participants will be assigned to one of the following teams (the number of teams depending on the number of participants:
Rogue Squadron
The Kobayashi Maru
War Rig
The White Walkers
House Harkonen
The Time Lords
John Smallberries
1.21 Gigawatts
Cylon Raiders
The Gray Wardens
I want to use Curse Voice for this. So all players in a group will be in a single channel. So, even if your team isn't playing in the current game you can spectate and chat with the other players—cheer for goals and saves and some good natured heckling.
For the championship bracket, I guess we'd split the channels to include only the teams playing in the game. Then as the games get fewer and fewer people can join as spectators. I'm not so familiar with Curse, so I don't know if this is possible. My vision is that for the final game, everyone who played will be in the channel cheering and chatting. Might need to makes some rules for this. For example, while the ball is in play keep the chatter to a minimum so the teams can communicate, but after goals folks can cheer and heckle.
If you're interested in joining the tournament, please say so here (along with your level) so that I can get a general idea of how many people will show up. Also, friend me up on Steam so that I'll be able to invite you to groups and send you messages during the tournament. On the day of the tournament, I'll take a roll call and assign teams. (At least, I hope it'll run that smoothly...haha!) Also, if you have suggestions, please feel free to say something. This is my first time organizing something like this, so I'm open for ideas or tips.
TL:DR – ROCKET LEAGUE HAT TOURNAMENT!
Jarpy the Red Shirt is ready.
Here's a global clock to save everyone doing timezone math:

In the constructive feeback category: I'm slightly confused by terms like "group stage" and "bracket" because I believe they come from actual sport, but I have full confidence in The High Chipmunk of Niigata Prefecture to guide me (us?) on this journey.
Busy the 12th, so all y'all! have fun!
Key party. Cool idea. I hope I can participate but won't know until later.
Thanks for setting this up! Count me in!
Uhh....Jedi...? Sure! Jedi! [famous last words]
I'd put my name in the hat, but I'll be in Vegas that weekend
Sadly, I'll be out of town on the 12th.
But, I like this idea and hope I can make it another time.
Sounds like fun.
I'm in!
Jedi, but not a good one.
A fun idea! I might be able to join. Will just be keeping my eye on it for now.

While, the current design for Curse Voice isn't ideal for this setup, it should work out ok. A single call can hold up to 50 people, but it forces everyone on to Push-To-Talk once there are 10 or more people. We'll just have to post the link to the spectator voice call here in the thread so anyone can jump in when they're not playing.
Spectating the games is a slightly more difficult logistical problem, because AFAIK the maximum number of connected clients is still 8, so you can only have 2 in-game spectators in a 3v3 match. We'll probably have to take advantage of Steam's automatic game streaming here by having one dedicated spectator that everyone else can stream video from.
And finally, I nominate that we use Challonge to manage the bracket, as it provides a live updating web view for all interested parties to follow.
Count me in! Unless some unforseen circumstance befalls me, I should be free that day.
Cathadan, how would Discord compare against Curse for this type of tournament? I find Discord much better at setting up channels ad hoc, but ignorant as to whether it can support large numbers of users.
I can't make it that day, but good luck to all! It's a great idea!
I'm in.
There's a prize for the worst player, right?
I will certainly try to attend if there is a space
I'm in. And after playing with some goodjers, I'm going to call myself a redshirt. Maybe I can get in some extra practice in the next week and graduate to an orange shirt. That's a thing, right?
Would love to join. I am very low skill, but looking forward to it! Mixolyde on steam and curse.
If orange shirt is better than red shirt, i must be infrared!
We had 20 people in chat today. I used invites from the GWJ curse group (GWJ Pocket Rockets), which I set to make "PTT" or "voice activated" player choice. I don't think most people had PTT while in the channel any they were still able to talk after the group size pushed 10. I few folks had issues though with their mics...?
I've played 2 matches! They were disasters! I'm in!
I want to be in, but I can't - got a bachelor party on the 12th
I might be able to make it. 7 CST might be a bit early for me.
Busy the 12th, so all y'all! have fun!
I may not be busy!
Can we just show up or do we need to commit now?
Hi folks, unfortunately due to some newly hatched family plans I won't be around for this.
Sincere apologies and have fun!
Hi all!! Been lurking for a while on your forums/site since one of my co-workers turned me onto you all. Once I saw your active RL contingent, I had to join up!
Sign me up for the festivities! I'm a noob at RL as well. All my rankings sit around the 500-600 mark, so let me know where that leaves me! Looking forward to it!
Hello All,
I'm going to try and make it 8pm est. You can add my name. It has been a blast playing with the community.
After playing last night with some Goodjers, is there a level below Redshirt that I could be? Ceruleanpants?
I most ended up playing a game of "holy crap, I touched the ball!", and although I did score once over 4 games, it that was mostly an accident.
I profoundly apologize to my teammates-to-be for my forthcoming crapitude.
That sounds like my skill level.
The game is a lot of fun to watch and it's fun to zoom the little cars around, but I find it frustrating that I can't really contribute effectively to my team. I'd love to participate in the tourney, but I really can't see myself contributing to anyone else's fun, and that's the main reason I play multiplayer. If I'm only having fun for myself, solo play just seems more logical to me.

Pshaw, multiplayer is a blast. You may not contribute to your team winning, but participating will contribute to everyone's fun. Logic is not fun, come play!
I would like to play, but I'm not sure if I can commit to the time (2 kids). I think my daughter has soccer but I am not sure of the time/location.
