Gigantic Catch-All

Gigantic has gone from closed alpha to closed beta today, which brings the first opportunity for playing on your Xbox One! Seemed like a good time to start a thread.

Gigantic is a 3rd-person (Gears perspective in this case) MOBA-ish team action game.

I'm hoping to play the beta on Xbox One later tonight!

Just redeemed my code not twenty minutes ago, so I probably won't be on until tomorrow, pending download times. Not sure if this is the game that'll get me interested in MOBAs -- though to be fair, I haven't given Smite a fair shake. I love the art style, though... Love. It.

I tried DOTA 2 last year. I hated two things, primarily: creeps and last hitting. This game has neither. It also has the gigantic boss creature that you're trying to slay. I feel like they've taken some good basic design from MOBAs without having really made a MOBA.

I played the tutorial tonight, but I was SO tired from the work week, the first week of my daughter going to public school, etc. that I couldn't possibly try a live game. Instead I got in bed before 10pm, which pretty much never happens.

Looking forward to actually going online soon!

Just ran the tutorial this morning.

Only a little confused on format -- is it just 2v2 versus? Say you and I got on together, are we playing matches against each other? I've only gotten -- through osmosis and other means -- that something like, say, DOTA has teamwork/cooperative stuff.

Whole new genres of games can be confusing...

It's 5v5. Not sure if you can group in beta.

So there are two heroes who are playable in the tutorial (tons available in the online beta). The more straightforward of the two is Knossos, a melee fighter. Here's a "Clash Course" on him. Personally, I skip the lore section and focus on the section where they detail the hero's abilities, and then watch the live match for fun.

Remember you mentioning this Fed. Signed up for the beta and am watching the email box for instructions.

If you told them Xbox One, you should hopefully get in quickly. They are saying on their forums that they need more Xbox testers.

The servers are only live on weekends right now, so with my brother getting married last week, I still haven't played anything other than the tutorial.

Despite the return of college football, I'll try to play some actual matches this weekend!

Hoping so...still no word in my email after signing up and confirming the email address.

The weekend is here, beta servers are back, and I've gotten two games in so far! Good stuff!

Edit: Played a third match, and it all clicked! I had the most kills and reasonably few kills (20/7) of anyone in the match! We won handily.

I was playing Lord Knossos, one of the recommended starter heroes. I don't know if he's OP or if people are still just learning right now. In the other matches, I played one match with Knossos and one as Tyto - which was the first.

Kinda sucks having to figure out how to play a hero (other than Knossos and Uncle Sven) in a live match, instead of being able to practice the abilities in a tutorial or even just a closed room.

The game definitely reminds me of WoW PvP, but obviously more actiony. There's Crowd Control, Debuffs, Interrupts, etc. I imagine it plays very differently depending on the Hero you play. I'm curious to play a ranged class.

Speaking of ranged classes, I played several matches as Charnok, and that wasn't terrible. I played one as Imani, and didn't like playing her at all - though to be fair, I never got a handle on her abilities.

Then, in the interest of wanting to try more characters, I gave Voden a shot. Previously, I had thought he looked too complicated, with different abilities pulling in different directions. Knossos just wants to beat down. Charnok just wants to burninate. Voden has a lot going on.

I loved it. I now have a favorite ranged character. I may even prefer him to Knossos, but I need more matches to tell. I guess it kind of makes sense in that I mainly played WoW classes with a lot of utility: Paladin and Shaman.

And in the BIG NEWS department, they are giving out four beta keys to everyone that's already in it later this week. If I have extra after taking care of IRL friends, I'll post here.

Looking forward to the opportunity to get in. I signed up the for the beta, but still haven't gotten in.

Thank you so much!

You can pay me back with impressions posts here.

I have 4 keys for this and none of my friends are interested, Non-Grinders can send me a PM for them, but keep in mind you must have at least Windows 10 or an Xbox One.

As a person not completely into MOBAs, but completely into Smite due to the camera and action-orientation, I enjoyed this from the outset. The art style is gorgeous and I enjoyed the playstyles of the few characters I've tried so far (Tripp, Knossos, and Voden).

I am curious to see how they're going to add depth, as the fairly straightforward builds (a couple of decision points per ability) and lack of items don't give you tons to think about. That said, not having tons to think about is a glorious thing when a game is fun to play and nice to look at.

They have multiple battlefields, for one thing. I don't know about Smite, but traditional MOBAs just have the one. Only one in the beta right now, but they've had another in there previously.

I only got one match in this weekend thanks to a very busy schedule, and being exhausted on Friday. I went to bed with no video games!

I will be checking this out tonight, thanks to b12n11w00t.

I have one more beta key, reserved for an Xbox One player.

PM me if you have an XB1 and are not a coffee grinder!

Edit: Last of my codes is gone!

I'd like a code if any are still available!

Got my code from b12n11w00t, may try this tonight if I can break away from the new Destiny content. The only vaguely MOBA-ish game I've ever really enjoyed was Monday Night Combat, which was enough of a mix of lighthearted goofy shooter and MOBA that I actually enjoyed it. That was obviously a class-based rather than hero-based game, but any similarity noticed by people who have played both it and Gigantic?

The hell you will.

Spoiler:

Servers are only up on weekends so far.

I would describe this as nothing at all like Monday Night Combat, though I played only a little of that. MNC features tons of NPC enemies ("creeps"), right?

It's more like being plopped down into a traditional MOBA, using an over the shoulder perspective, and playing an action PvP game. It's great!

any extra codes floating around i'd like one.

Thanks!

After a bit of headache with their buggy key redemption system, I think I finally have access into the beta. Looks great so far! Can't wait to play it!

Oh... Bummer.

I still have 2. Just PM me if you want one.

Got in two rounds last night, after playing the tutorial. I didn't know the beta didn't start until this weekend, maybe that's why the queue times were bad ( > 5 minutes). Overall, I had a good time. The animation and art direction are, surprise, fantastic. The text is way too small. Certain of the MOBA aspects seem counter-inuititive, like when you should attack the giant beasts vs capping turrets. Or maybe I was just dense, leading to our teams loss, but everyone is learning. First round I played the robot turret guy, and second round the healer. Both were fun and felt quite different. There is a learning curve of seeing an enemy and figuring out if you should fight or run because you just don't know what they can do. Despite some frame rate hitches, I'd be playing it again this weekend if I wasn't camping. Hopefully I can get back on next week.

I didn't know the servers were up last night, but I needed to get good sleep anyway. Hoping to play some this evening.

Thanks for the key!

Played a couple matches. LOVE the look and the animations. Game is definitely in hardcore beta mode. There's potential here, but they need to fine tune a lot.

The art style is pretty cool and the animations are nice and fluid. Agreed that there is definitely some balancing issues that they most likely will be addressing.

I do really enjoy the level progression aspects too. You have to make decisions quickly though, if you don't want your enemy to progress too quickly and cap "flags".

I still haven't played since the switch to needing windows 10. But I do have some keys if people want to PM me. Hopefully I'll remember to check when I'm at home
