Modded Minecraft Multiplayer Server

fenomas wrote:

Can anyone give me the tl;dr on Minecraft versions? Is the Java version the main one where new features happen, or are they all equivalent feature-wise, or what?

tl;dr: Minecraft comes in two flavors these days: Java edition and Bedrock edition. Java edition is ahead of Bedrock, but only by 1 major release right now.

The Java edition is currently in version 1.15, and runs only within a standalone Windows (or Mac or Linux?) JRE. The Java edition supports all the crazy mods and modpacks that we know and love in this thread.

The Bedrock edition is currently in version 1.14, and runs on virtually every modern computing platform there is (Windows 10, Xbox, PS4, Switch, iPhone, Android, ...), and as far as I can tell, supports cross-platform multiplayer. And Xbox achievements, regardless of what platform you're playing on. The Bedrock edition does support mods, but they're far more "watered down" than the mods you'll find in the Java edition.

Thanks both of you!

By the way, are they separate purchases? On PC I mean, I assume other platforms are separate.

Up until 2 days ago, if you owned the Java edition, Microsoft would let you claim the Windows 10 Bedrock edition for free. Now, they’re separate purchases.

...I always was known for my impeccable timing.

Would anyone be interested in trying a 1.15 modpack? There are a few that have started to show up; Crypto and I toured a couple of them to check server viability, and to start off we're recommending Valhelsia 2. It's a general kitchen-sink pack, no quests, and it has a fair number of old mod favorites and some that we've never seen before. Looks like some nice decorative mods as well.

Ordinarily I would be all over that, but Minecraft 1.16 is going to drop soon and Lucy is really looking forward to that.

If you're wondering why I stopped playing modded, it's because I started doing two hours of vanilla Minecraft a day with Lucy during quarantine, and I didn't want to burn out. I know what you're thinking, "too much Minecraft?" Yeah, it's possible. We live in strange times.

I can definitely respect and appreciate that.

I'll be setting up Valhelsia 2 on our current mTxServ server (replacing MCE) today, and it should be up and running by tonight. I don't know whether I'll be able to capture a backup copy of the MCE world before it gets replaced; that's what I'll be exploring this afternoon.

I'll be ready and happy to help test anything merphle.

Not about Valhelsia 2, the sound is really neat.

New post with the latest server information.

For Vanilla Minecrafters who would like to learn more about Modded Minecraft, I present:
Modpack: GWJ Modded 101
Version: 1.3.1
Server connection: mc.merphle.com
Dynmap URL: http://mc.merphle.com:8123
This server is connected to #moddedminecraft on Discord.

For experienced Modded Minecrafters:
Modpack: Valhelsia 2
Version: 2.2.4
Server connection: mce.merphle.com
This server is connected to #moddedminecraft on Discord.

The server is up. It's using a new Minecraft 1.15-compatible Discord mod, so there may be some tweaking needed for its configuration over time, but it's working.

I won't be playing for a few more hours, but folks are free to connect in now. Bear in mind that the server browser will show a red X (indicating incompatible mods or something), but it does connect fine. Forge 1.15 weirdness, I assume. Also, it takes a crazy long amount of time in the "Downloading Terrain" phase of connection; don't panic.

Bootin up to connect.

They were tricksy and updated the pack today, so you'll need to install one version back to get on the server (I think I might just tinker with it solo until the server gets the update)

BTW, I kinda exhausted Valhelsia and fell back to 1.12.2 with Enigmatica 2-1.77.

I found the ore distribution table for Valhelsia in one Silent's pages. It's:

Copper: 40 ~ 90
Tin: 20 ~ 80
Silver: 0 ~ 40
Lead: 0 ~ 30
Nickel: 0 ~ 24
Platinum: 5 ~ 20
Zinc: 20 ~ 60
Bismuth: 16 ~ 64
Bauxite : 15 ~ 50
Uranium: 0 ~ 18

Crypto and I found a mod pack recipe conflict that prevents you from making the I/E core drill. It will be fixed with the next release.

[EDIT:] You can make the core drill in a standard M/C crafting table, not using Silent's.

In case you guys have been wondering where I've been - unlikely, I know - I've been playing Omnifactory on a slow burn.

I've got a fairly nice automation set up using locked drawers, LV (and the occasional MV) machines, and mechanical crafters. They're all tied together using EnderIO ducts. I've got AE digital storage going (item and fluid) and just got my bulk polyethylene crafting going.

I've a fully fledged Deep Learning set up for resource generation and loads of power from diamonds in nuministic dynamos with a lapidary calibration upgrade.

I'm making all the Bounty Board items, so can usually buy the ore required for the other materials needed. A simple MV ore processing set up allows me to eke out the secondary outputs from the bought ore as needed.

HV should be soon and then into the microverse for more resource generation. Space exploration is soon - looking forward to that - and at some point I really should go to the end. Can you believe I never been there? I'm also thinking going through the Twilight Forest would be interesting as well. I'll do both once I'm geared up appropriately.

Thought I'd share....

Our Valhelsia 2 server has been upgraded to pack version 2.2.4

Raid on The End tomorrow 6:31 PDT.

TONIGHT WE DINE IN HELL!

an aide whispers

Tonight we dine in a weird, kinda outer-spacey dimension?

Valhelsia 2 v. 2.2.5 has been released.

I would appreciate some help from someone who has killed a nether in this pack. I'd like to do likewise. Would anyone volunteer?

New post with the latest server information - now this is a proper Patchwork post!

For Vanilla Minecrafters:
Modpack: None! It's Vanilla!
Version: 1.16.2
Server connection: GAME-USEAST-01.MTXSERV.COM:27240
Dynmap URL: https://game-useast-01.mtxserv.com/m...
This server IS NOT connected to #moddedminecraft on the GWJ Discord.

For experienced Modded Minecrafters:
Modpack: Heavens of Sorcery
Version: 0.10.1.3 (beta)
Server connection: GAME-USEAST-02.MTXSERV.COM:27130
Dynmap URL: http://game-useast-02.mtxserv.com/ma...
This server IS connected to #moddedminecraft on the GWJ Discord.

Okay. I admit it. I don't understand the Patchwork note.

If I fix my URL, does that help?

See, because now my server post contains info for both Vanilla... and Chocolate Modded. Look, it made more sense to me last night. It's been a long week.

merphle wrote:

Yes. Yes, it does.

There's a "new" modpack (been out for a month or two) that looks potentially neat: Heavens of Sorcery, made by the folk that created Sprout and Regrowth. Vallen Frostweaver has a video series (ep 1) showcasing him playing through it.

It's a skyblock pack, though you start off with a pretty generous (and pretty) skyland to start off, and it seems to be surprisingly non-grindy. It's also deeply weighted towards the magic mods. It features a quest book with a detailed written story. It's for MC 1.12, which is both a pro (very rich and stable mod) and and a con (a fair bit of repetition) at this point, but it might be worth it. Recipes have been changed to fit with the overall nature of this pack, and from what I've seen are NOT obnoxious.

Any interest in giving it a shot?

Regrowth ended up being one of my favorite modpacks. I'm up for it.

It's about the same number of mods as Valhelsia 2, but runs in Minecraft 1.12.2. That should be more stable and easier to load.

As I'm always leaning into the tech mods of a pack, I'd be interested in exploring a magic focused pack with a good quest book. No guarantee I won't quickly lose interest, but I'd up for a go.

I'm currently playing Enigmatica 5 as a way to try a newer version of Minecraft.

Heavens of Sorcery version "0.10.0 beta" (the latest version currently available) is now up and running on server connection GAME-USEAST-02.MTXSERV.COM:27130

After you log in, you'll want to run "/island create" to create a new island for yourself. There's a way to form a shared team island if folks want to collaborate, too ("/island invite" and "/island join", after someone creates the initial island).

In the inventory screen, the vanilla recipe book button has been replaced with this modpack's guide/quest book. You'll be referring back to that a lot. Enjoy!
