US Soccer Catch-All

Have fun at the game, Fed.

Argentina are in pretty great form, but anything can happen in a single game, and I would love for the USMNT to square off with Colombia in the final on Sunday.

Already? Come on defense

Too easy.

Well, not much to say about that.

We had a bunch of nervous-looking passes that turned into giveaways. Hopefully we'll come out with a lot more confidence in the 3rd Place game (Saturday night in Arizona).

Argentina plays some pretty ball.

I imagine we're going to play Colombia on Saturday.

That game wasn't fun. I've got to say, tailgating with the American Outlaws was great, and the seats my friend got were the best seats I've ever had for a sporting event. Third row, just beside the US bench. Klinsmann finally heard me yelling at him to put Nagbe in!

We played a terrible, scared starting lineup, but honestly I don't think anyone we could have played would have made a difference. That was the top ranked team in the world with a will to win. Hopefully we can win on Saturday and take home a trophy.

I'm very ok w/us losing. I'm NOT ok with no shots and pathetic giveaways.

How did the crowd look on TV? It seemed packed from where I was, and overwhelmingly pro-USA. I was very pleasantly surprised in that regard.

It looked nice and full.

Jurgen said after the game that they gave Argentina too much respect, and that pretty much sums it up. The US seemed to go into the game not believing that they belonged on the same field, and it because self-fulfilling.

It better have, since they announced an attendance of almost 71K.

It sounded great, too, at least at the very start.

Okay, I understood giving Tim Howard a chance, but now we're sitting Brooks and Johnson for minor injuries and putting Besler at CB and Orozco at LB.

Let's go USA!

Well, crap night for footy tonight. USA outplayed again, but not by much. They had some chances that they need to put away and Ospina was huge when he needed to be (especially on Dempsey's free kick). I want to see a lot more of Pulisic. Too bad Bedoya crossed paths with Wood at just the wrong moment, or Wood might have had a goal.

RBNY were winning until the 93' (of 93), until they chose not to defend someone out wide on their right side. Looked like my O-40 team.

I was mostly happy with the US performance. We played well enough to win, but never finished any of our chances. A number of times we got the ball forward and then looked like we didn't know how to proceed the last few yards. Other times I don't know how we missed.

Overall, a pretty good tournament for us, and a great one for this hemisphere.

It was fun to watch for sure. I only caught the second half of tonight's game, but the US showed some serious effort.

USMNT going to Cuba for a friendly on October 7. Obviously this is interesting politically, but what's most interesting to me is that we resume WC Qualifying in early September and haven't scheduled any friendlies leading up to that. Maybe it's not possible with the Olympics in August.

I assume that Cuba isn't terribly good - hopefully we'll use this opportunity to give playing time to some young guys. I'm sure the older guys will have gotten plenty of time between the Copa and the upcoming qualifiers.

The USWNT has a friendly vs Costa Rica tomorrow (Friday) at 8pm Central. Go USA!

Holy moley, the US Women start the Olympic games tomorrow at 6pm Eastern!

Go USA!

Game day!

Yeah I was confused when I heard this morning that they play today when the Olympics doesn't officially start until Fri.

Soccer usually has to start early due to the number of games in the tournament

It's not the only sport active today, btw. I think I saw gymnastics listed in the NBC Sports app.

Let's go USA! Sweep the group stage!

First knock-out round is Friday at noon Eastern vs Sweden!

I'll be at the doctor.

Super excited to watch some of these games.

Pia Sundhage is a great coach, and knew our team really well.

Congrats to Sweden, who advance to the Olympic semifinals for their first time ever.

Bummed we didn't win, but still can't bring myself to root against a charming goofball like Pia.

Hope they take the gold.

Hope Solo getting suspended for a day for her comments after the Sweden match would have been dumb, 6 months is farcical.

They didn't just suspend her, they also terminated her contract.

USA TODAY wrote

Beyond the suspension announced publicly, Solo's national team contract was terminated after a 15-minute-long meeting with the federation on Wednesday, USWNT Players Association executive director Rich Nichols told USA TODAY Sports in a phone interview.

She has burned a lot of bridges over the years. I am not really surprised that they did this.

Yeah, this is not exactly a first offense.

Maybe the USSF should have disciplined those previous events proportionately and in a timely manner? Instead they more or less look the other way when there were trophies, victory tour tickets to sell, and clean sheet milestone money to be made and then dished out punishment when it was most convenient for them.

I'm not a fan of Solo but this is harsh.

She has been disciplined previously, and I support the idea of escalating punishments for repeat offenders (which is part of every justice system I'm familiar with).

Why are you so exercised about this? Aren't you Canadian?

I'm okay with escalating punishments, and am not a fan of Hope Solo's comments after the Sweden game.

That said, I think that six months' suspension for essentially talking smack is absurd - and that it's not a coincidence that this suspension is happening at a time that the USWNT has no important games happening.

Are they scrambling to find a long-term keeper solution? Probably. But they've given themselves a lot of wiggle room by giving a superficially-onerous punishment, in a timeframe where Solo's absence would not risk any qualification / competitive games.
