US Soccer Catch-All

We use Sling, both main packages, and added the Spanish extra to get Bein Sports Spanish channel. That gets most everything that we want.

Reddit soccer streams.

US Open Cup is going on tonight. NYRB is playing NYCFC in the cup right now! In fifteen minutes, the Dynamo take on a cinderalla amateur side.

All matches are streamed free on the US Open Cup site.

It's nice that if there's one team we can beat consistently, it's those blue bastages from across the river.

The Dynamo somehow fended off the squad made up of public school teachers last night, and now stand to host Minnesota United next.

Julian Green sure picks his moments to score, doesn't he, folks?

(USA - France is on ESPN right now. Our kids are beating France's first team at the moment, but of course, it's a friendly.)

Good result. What an ending in net. An interesting next 4 years for the USMNT.

I had that as a 4-1 thrashing. Even if it's a friendly, it still gives me some hope for the future.

As a sidenote, watching sports, I've learned, is all about access. The easier it is for you to access, the more you'll watch.

All of this is a way of saying that I signed up for ESPN+ this year, and access to MLS games on it has been a very pleasant development. I've watched more of the MLS in the last two months than I had in the prior decade.

Yep, Minnesota United wasn't on Sling last year, but this year they are. I've watched 5-6 games so far, really enjoying it. Now I'm a fan.

Recently moved to DC so I feel the need to get into DC United but, wow, that is going to be a tough one. New stadium in July, though!

It’s official. The US will make the 2026 World Cup... (so will Mexico and Canada)

Mexico and Canada will host 10 games apiece and the remainder will be in the US, including all quarterfinals and beyond.

Welcome to the area. The Barre Brava are an awesome cheer section. They have some excellent drummers. I like the black shirts a lot, too.
Vamos United!

Speaking of MLS drummers, I got to the Dynamo game early last week and decided to walk laps around the stadium. On my final circuit I got caught behind the supporters band. It was totally awesome. It reminded me a bit of going to Texas Aggie football games and being right next to the band.

Y'know, the way that the MLS organizes its season isn't all that unique or weird, even compared to some South American or European leagues (the Belgian First Division features a play-off of sorts, and don't even ask to me to explain how the Argentine Primera Division works), but I do wish a few less teams made the MLS Cup. I'm willing to accept the Americanized playoffs, albeit begrudgingly (I think they should scrap them entirely or switch to a two-legged final between the top 2 teams in each conference and really big up the U.S. Open Cup), just... maybe make the playoffs a little more selective.

The Dynamo beat SKC in the US Open Cup tonight, 4-2!

Bring on the semifinals!

They have one of these for a bunch of the young USMNT players, like Yedlin, Pulisic, Carter-Vickers and more.

I know intuitively these do not make these players good, but damn if US Soccer doesn't know how to hype.

I know I'm probably the only person who cares, but... we do know that calling it "MLS Soccer" is possibly even more redundantly dumb than saying "ATM Machine"? It's literally saying "Major League Soccer Soccer".

That's almost as grating on the ears as "the MLS".

Tell it to the executives in the 90s who gave their fledgling soccer league the same name as the planet's largest real estate association.

They could just change. WWE is doing fine. Does anyone even remember WWF?

Yup. I still think WWF every time I think of Pro Wrestling, which is seldom.

I don't know how I missed this last March, but CONCACAF is again holding a CONCACAF Women's Championship to determine qualification to the 2019 World Cup. Dates are October 4 - 17 right here in the USA.

Actually, looking at the venues, I think I must have seen this earlier, but forgotten that it also doubles as the WWC2019 qualification process. Two of the three venues are in Texas. I wonder if AO Houston is organizing any bus trips.

The MLS really loves it's faux-euro posturing (Real Salt Lake is profound know-nothing stupidity, just change it to Salt Lake FC/SC), so it'd be absolutely hilarious if they screw Columbus out of their team and instantly make Austin the most hated team in American soccer, much the same as with MK Dons. I will happily spend every waking moment shitting on Austin FC and wishing nothing but the worst on them and specifically their owner.

I'm with you! In fact, I'm ahead of you - I've been sh*tting on Austin sports teams for over three decades!

Spoken like a true maroon.

Uh....

Report: David Moyes could become new USMNT boss

Okay, so, my initial reaction was SWEET GOD NO. But let me be fair:

While Moyes was totally and completely out of his depth at ManU, he only got that job because he did so well at a smaller-tier club like Everton, and the USMNT is definitely not in the top tier of international sides, so maybe it'd fit him better? Yes, he got relegated with Sunderland, but there isn't a manager alive who probably could've fixed that shambles, and he even though they were in no way impressive, West Ham stayed up fairly comfortably last season.

So...... maybe not the worst thing possible?

Also, looks like Columbus-to-Austin is a done deal, barring a Hail Mary lawsuit. We're probably going to see more of this in the future, but it seems extra sad happening to the club whose stadium is where "Dos a Cero" was born.

Yeah, this sucks.

So it'll be "Inter Miami"

The full name is "Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami", which is a fine nod to the Spanish-speaking community, but shortening it to "Inter" makes it sound like a crappy rip-off of Italy. Also, I couldn't find any clubs from Spanish-speaking countries that go with "Internacional" but it's still significantly less dumb than Real Salt Lake, which remains the gold standard for idiocy.
