Former President Jimmy Carter reveals he has cancer

Not really controversial or particularly political but I put it here anyway.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter revealed he has cancer on Wednesday. It was discovered after the 90-year-old's recent liver surgery.
"Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body," Carter said in a statement. "I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare," he added.

He certainly has been one of the most - if not the most - active former presidents we have had. I think he has done a ton of good work since he left office probably much more than he did while in office.

On his second day in office, Carter pardoned all evaders of the Vietnam War drafts. During his term as President, Carter created two new cabinet-level departments, the Department of Energy and the Department of Education. He established a national energy policy that included conservation, price control, and new technology. In foreign affairs, Carter pursued the Camp David Accords, the Panama Canal Treaties, the second round of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT II), and the return of the Panama Canal Zone to Panama.

Ummmmm... he did a LOT of good work while in office, too. I will never understand the idea that he was such a bad President, especially given that a lot of his policies and aims are things we're still talking about trying to do today, at least on the Democrat side.

Either way, very sad.

Wishing him the best for a speedy and thorough recovery. He's the best *person* to serve in the office in decades.

One of the earlier examples of "if you repeat the lie enough times, everyone will just assume it's true."

Yeah, one of the later examples in my transition from conservative to liberal as I matured was

"Wow, my family and the other Republicans really hate this Jimmy Carter guy. I should look into what sort of stuff he did as President.

Hmm, yep, seems pretty great. This is starting to be a pretty disturbing trend..."

Jimmy Carter Says He Has Melanoma That Has Spread To his Brain

Former President Jimmy Carter said on Thursday that he has melanoma that was discovered in his liver and has spread to four spots on his brain.

Carter, 90, said that he will receive the first of four radiation treatments for the disease on Thursday. The treatments will be spread out over three week intervals.

Carter said that he will drastically cut back his work at the Carter Center while he receives treatment.

The former president seemed optimistic during a press conference on Thursday.

"I feel good. I haven't felt a weakness," Carter said.

The 39th president said that he felt "relieved" after surgery earlier this month when he thought doctors had removed the cancer from his liver. That same afternoon, Carter said, an MRI showed that the cancer had spread to his brain.

"I thought I just had a few weeks left. I was surprisingly at ease," he said.

Asked whether he had any regrets about his life, Carter referred to the Iranian hostage crisis.

"I wish I had sent one more helicopter to get the hostages and we would have rescued them and I would've been re-elected," he said. "But that may have interferred with the foundation of the Carter Center. If I had to choose between four more years and the Carter Center I think I would choose the Carter Center."

Speaking about his cancer, the Georgia Democrat said that he was "looking forward to a new adventure."

"Now it's in the hands of God," he said. "And I'll be prepared for anything that comes."

I just learned about Carter being one of the guys going in to contain the NRX meltdown, where the 50:s protective gear only allowed them to be in there for 90 seconds at a time.

The rightwing faux-hardass blowhards could always go f*ck themselves, but now doubly so. Carter is completely badass.
