I am still in the middle (Around minute 45 - We also need those nerf guns in our office :D) but this turns out to be a great episode.
I did my seminar on M.U.Ds and how they affected collaboration and social interaction between people and it was an incredible self discovery as I was very into WOW during my B.A.
Keep up the amazing episodes - They keep me alive
Thanks everyone, great show. It really was way better than 'pretty fun'.
Certis, do you have easily accessible stats from the forum? I'm wondering if there are data to support my hypothesis that Amoebic and Chelsea's insights could cause an uptick in activity from lurkers (and semi-lurkers like me).

Really interesting to have Chelsea on, and her input is invaluable. I'm always quoting the ESA's essential facts and Annual report, and people still don't believe me that women make up a substantial part of the gaming community. I understand the premise of letting stuff just slide off of you, and giving a positive response in the spirit "oh sure, sorry about that," but I have a hard time with that. I've been doing that for years, dealing with misogynistic crap online for as long as the internet has been the internet. It gets old after a while. And I barely have a right to complain when other women are being harassed on a daily basis. So where do we draw the line? Where does "banter" become harassment? When do we acknowledge that these stereotypes ("oh you're girl? Don't take the heavy, take the medic") are harmful, and drive people away from gaming? Because that's what happens, ultimately.
So yeah, I like it just fine on my "soapbox", and I'm not letting that kind of trash talk slide anymore. I'm not saying "be aggressive", I'm saying "be assertive." Granted, it doesn't happen much anymore, because I don't play TF2 anymore and the GW2 community is generally pretty awesome, but when it does, I put my foot down and basically say "dude, that is not cool."
Insert obligatory Picard "the line must be drawn here" meme.
I could totally relate with what Cory was saying in reaction to the emailer asking how to get his girlfriend involved in gaming. Obviously, different strokes for different folks, but all I could think of during that email was that there was not a snowball's chance in hell that I would take a backseat. I can barely stand to watch friends play, all I want to do is wrestle the keyboard and mouse and take over. This kind of question comes up regularly on the forums, though, one similar thread was recently rez'd, and my answer is always that the guys are asking the wrong questions. You shouldn't be just asking what games are good to draw in your spouses. Most of the time, we're missing information on the person's likes and dislikes. Is that person into story, into horror, into zombies, scifi, cooking, whatever. You need to find something that the person will latch onto, instead of just asking for a pre-established list.
As for games I wish I could go back and play for the first time again... The Mass Effect games (all three of them, yes indeed!) are up there. But also Transistor, which I loved to bits, and absolutely drew me in from the get-go with its beautiful in media res beginning. Probably KotOR and Jade Empire as well (I like BioWare games, what can I say?). There are some books, too, the Dune books in particular. Basically, whether it's a game or a book (or even a movie!), I just want to recapture that magical wide eyed awe I had that first time around.
Great show, keep 'em coming, and see you guys next week.
Fab podcast again. Another great guest that I think deserves a regular seat on the show.
One of the points from the show that I feel I can comment on...
I had a non-gamer friend that shares the love of all cinema, TV and books that I do. I gently eased her into gaming with a LAN party Civ 5 game with a few other friends. We progressed to (only the first hour) of Outlast, Goat Simulator, I am Bread and have moved on to Life is Strange. I can now call her a gamer !

Great episode! Chelsea brought a very interesting voice/perspective to the call. I'd love to see more episodes with non-developer/journalist gaming professionals like her to widen the scope of discussions.

And that, right there, is what we need to do too, gentlemen. Save a little bit of "dude, that is not cool" in your back pocket, for when the time comes that you are witnessing gender-biased B.S. online (it won't take long). Sprinkle it around when needed, and show that men want positive change too.

Here, here! I think the show has been killing it with guest hosts lately, and this episode and Amoebic's were both stellar.

Why would you call yourselves "white privileged"? It bugs me when I hear this, it seems more and more podcasts are apologizing for simply being white. Stop it.
I'm not sure that acknowledging privilege is the same as apologizing for it.

The first step to overcoming your biases is recognizing them. If I want to think really clearly about race, class or gender, I need to accept that I have inherent biases in each category.
Sadly, I believe that prejudice is built in to human nature, but I also believe we can use our cognitive powers to mitigate it (which is basically my definition of civilization).

Just a follow-up note: Shawn talked up Contradiction a decent amount this episode, but ended up really disappointed with the ending. I actually hope we talk more about that next week.

Ooooh, I've remember another set of games I'd like to replay as if I've never played them before: Star Wars: the Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2. Such great games. I just might dive back in...
Ooh yeah. Especially 2... I did just replay it, and the story holds up beautifully, but I miss having the reveals be surprises

Hey gang, thanks for talking about the Game Club! I really want to make this a monthly thing (participants necessary) and am still working through the best way to implement. I have really liked the idea of a book club for games for a while and Alien is a great starting point. Totally agree, it is more like a support group because that game is TENSE.
If anyone wants in for next month, we are looking to start up Wolfenstein: The New Order. Come play!

Funny, my reaction to the interview was that it was "way better than I expected it to be." That was a really good segment.
HOWEVER, I do have to object very strongly to the comment at 2:30 implying that "older" people (in their 40s or 50s) don't understand modern gaming culture. Julian is out for one week, and suddenly I feel that my "older" demographic is being ignored, or even belittled.
I actually have been doing that lately, although not just with gender bias. I don't usually use voice, so my responses are almost always text but the "not cool" phrase is one that I use a lot.

I'd like to replay God Hand again for the first time.

I'm very glad you enjoyed the interview - and that it was better than you expected! However, my friend, I'm afraid you very much misunderstood that comment. I'm referring to the fact that many (not all) mental health counselors aren't familiar with modern gaming culture, specifically those who are older. By no means am I suggesting that "older people" don't get gaming.
Hi Chelsea, and thanks for the response!
My comment was more than a little tongue-in-cheek, so I'm sorry that didn't come across in what I wrote.
Also, I was poking fun at Shawn's comment about people in their 40s and 50s, rather than something you said.

Hey Hrdina, thank you for the clarification! And I'm sorry about the confusion ><. I'm just very well aware of my status as a youngin', so I try to be really sensitive to not coming across as a spring-chicken know-it-all. Lol. Perhaps I was a little too sensitive this time, heh. Thanks again
Thanks for this comment, Eleima! I certainly don't blame you for that, and I do think it's a great approach. (Honestly, I could talk for the whole podcast about the pros and cons of different approaches.) I think your distinction between "aggressive" and "assertive" is really important.
For me, I think it really is situational. When it's small, potentially tongue-in-cheek sexist comments, I tend to let it slide. However, I find that I take a very assertive standpoint on hate-speech (e.g., Racist comments, anti-LGBTQ comments, incessant bullying, etc.) And perhaps that's not a good thing for me to do - to diminish the effect that little sexist comments can have one someone. But ultimately I think I see it as a "cry wolf" kind of thing - if I go fussing at people for the little things, they're less likely to take me seriously when I fuss about the big things...and I take bullying and hate-speech very, very seriously.
Anyway, Eleima, you keep doing what you're doing - that's just my two cents
Hey Chelsea, great job on the show! I love hearing about psychological and behavioral issues in gaming. I hope they have you back on the show to talk about similar topics soon.
As an avid League of Legends player, I was interested in what you had to say regarding the challenges of improving behavior in such a large and infamous community. I know that Riot Lyte has been very open with Riot's efforts to improve general player behavior within the community, but it's unclear how much impact these efforts have had.
The best tool I've found for self-moderation is the handy dandy mute button. I learned long ago that 90% of the time, it is better to just mute potty-mouths at the first hint of toxicity than to try arguing with them. I'll usually try to reason with most people once, but if it fails, they get the mute boot! It's an imperfect solution, but it does completely eliminate the possibility of verbal abuse. It seems like the majority of people that spend their time typing inflammatory statements in chat are craving attention. If you mute them, most eventually figure out that they're just talking to themselves and shut up. Yet, most people seem hesitant to use the mute button until the trolls' attention appetites have been thoroughly satiated. I'm not sure why. Any thoughts?
I was bummed to hear about your comments regarding joining voice chat. Back in my WoW days, I heard those kinds of comments far too often during raids on Ventrilo. There has probably only been a female in my party for a couple hundred of the thousands of games of LoL I have played (we haven't had any regular female LoL players in the GWJ community to my knowledge), but I don't think I have ever been in a League call where a female was treated like that. I'm sorry that you have had to put up with that kind of sh*t. I guess I've just been very lucky with the groups I've been on comms with over the years. I play almost exclusively with GWJ people now, so that kind of thing just doesn't happen and hopefully never will.
On another LoL related note, I'm not sure if you watch any professional games, but the newest challenger team to make it to the LCS has a female support, and she's pretty much a bad-ass. See this video for some highlights of her amazing Thresh play: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fSt...
Also, I too have recently gotten into FFXIV and am leveling up a black mage, so high-five on our awesome taste in games
I need an "I'm with Dyni" t-shirt. -- Localgod54
I'm just going to +1 this.
Hey Dyni! Thanks for the kind words and thoughtful responses! I don't mute people myself, but I fully support those who choose to. There's no research to back this up, but I personally think it does well to reform players on a situational level. They'll end up shutting up for that particular match, but I don't believe it'll really reform their behavior overall. Unless, of course, they spend their silence reflecting on the pointlessness of their behavior...but that's wishful thinking, lol.
And yes! I was hard-core rooting for RNG. Remilia did a nice job, but I do hope to see her improve over the fall. She's not a bad player by any means, but she's a Thresh main, which puts her in league with BunnyFufu and Xpecial, and those are some SERIOUS competitors when it comes to Thresh play. Unfortunately for her, because of her status as the only female LCS player, she stands for a lot more than just a new coming support. I wish her the very best, because a lot of eyes are on her.
AND WOO! Black Mages FTW!
Great episode all around; enjoyed the conversation with Chelsea. I've long since stopped playing online with anyone other than GWJ folks or friends from "real" life, but I think the pro/anti-social discussion is an interesting one to have.
I found the idea that anonymity is responsible for some of the worst of this interesting. In part, I wonder if our longer-term identities here are why we select away some of the most egregious examples of internet asshattery.
