Project: Gorgon - a retro MMO from devs behind Asherons Call and Everquest

I think I am experiencing a bug but don't know how to resolve it. My character is new. I got a sword from the corpse in the cave and I change my action bar to "sword" but I have no actions. I go into the skills window and see my sword is level 0. I select the abilities button but the abilities list is empty. I was able to find something that got my sword level up to 1, but I still cannot use a sword. Anyone seen this before or know what I can do to resolve it? Might have to re-roll.

I think you should re roll... I think you're supposed to get the sword skill when you pick up the sword.

Actually You start with it. It's the grey skill on your bar when you first awaken.

@kazar May be a silly question but did you equip it? Just picking the sword up off the corpse isn't enough, you need to right-click it in your inventory and a litlle tiny, nigh-invisible unless you are running a 45" monitor @ 1080p or lower, "E" will show up in the top left corner of equipped gear. That's the only thing I can think of. If you did equip it and still no sword skills - submit bug report - re-roll

Now i can go through and kill multiples mobs of the ice creatures and high level skeletons without running out of power. Yet get 'No Damage' messages against the deer and have to run away.

Mobs have different resists etc. I believe you are referring to the Misery Yaks.. they are mean.. The Autopsy skill lets you see what the mob can do, for example I am to the point where I can see the armor health and skill the mob has... I have yet to unlock strengths or weaknesses though if that is even part of the autopsy skill.

Misery Yak
Armor 204 Health 255 Rage 390
Anatomy Construct
Effective: Crushing, Slashing, Piercing
Ineffective: Fire (very), Cold (very), Poison (very), Electricty (very), Trauma (very)
Immune: Darkness

Basically punch them with your fist, hit them with a sword or snipe them with an arrow. Probably all the things you aren't set up to do

I wish it was that simple. The E is there, I see the sword in my hand. I just don't have any sword abilities so I can't even swing it. Thankfully I am still in the starting dungeon. I filed a bug report and was hoping it would get fixed overtime, but I guess re-roll is the best option now.

Yeah, I was hoping it was that simple too. Figured it wouldn't be such an minor mistake but worth a shot none the less. Such a weird bug.
Well hopefully a re-roll works cause this game is pretty damned awesome even in it's half-baked state.

It's an Alpha. Reroll is the best way to solve many issues. It's the Alpha Omega.

Re-rolling got the sword skills working. Lag is horrible tonight though.

Funny kill. Spoiler tag in case people want to discover this stuff on their own.

Spoiler:

This game is great. I just killed a skeleton with the ability "Tell me about your mother" and when I did the autopsy on the body, the cause of death was "A lethal dose of shame"

There really is no balance in this game, and I kinda like it. I just hope that it doesn't turn into the usual 'buildofthemonth' fare.

I am sure it will be inevitable but what I like about the game is that you can't just respec, you just start using new skills. It would be cool if skills you don't use were to degrade. Force you to use everything to keep your older skills honed.

Other skill based games started doing that so that may be something they put in place eventually.

Grabbed the alpha, the old style graphics oddly don't seem to bother me at all. Only be doing the odds and ends in the tutorial cave and having fun.

I kickstarted and may play down the road but just don't have time atm.

It's the last day of the kickstarter, in case anybody was waiting to make up their mind.

Backed - had a blast this weekend running around smashing things with my fists. Only downside was some jerk swiping 63 skins I was trying to give to Marna and accidentally dropped. :\

I was having a terrible time with this until I moved the inventory window away from the gift box... mine was lined up so that the "drag item here to drop on ground" pop-up was right where the gift box was -_-

The Kickstarter completed tonight with just under $75000, almost four times it's goal. There was a party in Serbule with monster invasions and the Admin granting people temporary superpowers and/or randomly smiting people dead.

Having fun in the Alpha. I've backed it and found 2 bugs. Never been involved from Alpha on a game before. i am enjoying myself. Usually I can be found on Rubeckia or Peony.

I decided to give this a shot and also haven't been bothered by the 10 year old graphics despite my expectations to the contrary. I've just gotten out of the starter cave and have begun running around the first town and countryside. I've focused on unarmed combat and I've gone from being able to keep everything I'm fighting stun locked to not even scratching enemy armor and stuns barely hold for a round. Guess I've got to find some other stuff to fight for a while. I definitely like the mish mash or just combining skills and getting bonuses for just about every action I take. I don't see myself playing this long term due to the generally solo nature of my play but it's fun for now.

You can play this completely solo if you want well at least until you get to the max level and want stuff guarded by beasties that do require groups to take down.

Interesting. I just assumed as this was in the old school vein that outside of the intro stuff I was probably going to be expected to group up.

This is one thing that I am confused about. Is there a max level, or just skill caps? Will I get to a point where I will have a skill at level 5 but can't improve it because I have already learned too much?

I've been solo for three days and am at Unarmed 27 - it's not a problem, but you do need to figure out what you can fight and what you can't. As a rough estimate, check their health - if you can't kill them in a few blows, they will be too much for you when you get jumped by more than one.

Spoiler:

Watch out for mobs that are green - in any way. Elites are incredibly tough and hit hard, and the slimes regenerate very quickly.

No levels. Skills increase as you use them. There tends to be a "sweet spot" in usage that's the most efficient. For example, my skinning is level 18. If I skin a pig, I get a shoddy skin and +5 XP. If I skin a wolf, I get a crude skin and +25XP. If I try to skin something higher than that like a tiger, I'll fail and get nothing except +15XP. The only case I've seen where you don't get XP is if you can't perform the action at all - for example, trying to catch a fish above your Fishing level just doesn't work.

The current skill cap is 50 for most skills (some are more "in-progress" than others and have lower caps). When the game is finished the skill cap is supposed to be 100 for all skills.

Kazar, you'll have trainers who won't teach you new stuff until you get a certain level in a skill. Keep an eye on those; you don't want to blow past that level and not get the newer spells or whatever.

Having a blast. I backed the Kickstarter (as did my wife) and the game finally clicked for me this past weekend. Happily messing around with sword, bow and fire.

You can't wield sword and staff together, right? Only sword and bow, or staff and bow? I'd love to do fire and sword but I guess that would be OP.

I don't think so, as I haven't seen anyone running around like that - but I don't know for sure. There may be a skill that permits some level of integration though. Most of the Unarmed skills won't work unless your hands are empty, but Kick can always be used even if you're carrying a bow.

Also note that trainers can have entirely different skills, or different levels of skills, and of course may require a certain favor level. The faerie Unarmed trainer is the only place I've seen Headbutt, for example.

Robear sadly the bow is regulated to the off hand. Cant swap main hand gear for off hand.

There's a lot of high end trainers like the one Aetius mentioned, but they're scattered about. Some in hard to get spots.

In game you'll see people talking about levels, but they mean skill level. There's mobs that cant be damaged until you reach a certain level with a skill.

This game really scratches my exploration itch. I like that you die horribly if you end up in a spot you dont belong. It's fun going back later when you're a big boy and getting revenge on a group of mobs

Edit: almost forgot...

There's gear that allows you to use it for it's primary function and has an activation ability on it for another. I've seen swords that allow you to cast necro skills. I ended up selling it because it was too low level for what i wanted, but thought i was cool. They're more prevalent around the 25+ levels.

Also for those that do Necromancy remember that you have to find an item that activates that skill for you. Otherwise you're stuck with the base Necro staff. I was stuck with it until i found an offhand fire globe that also allowed Necro.

I'm still trying to find the darn Necro altar in the Crypt.

pain in the ass even with level 30 skills. best bet is to keep an eye on chat and see if people are doing runs to there

I'm just tagging along with small groups, building my skills and hoping to get lucky lol.
