Stellaris Perfect-All

I continue to run into storylines in this game that I have never seen even after 200+ hours of play.

Last night one of the industrial age societies I had an aggressive observation post over basically went through the entire storyline of Xcom

Also beat the Ether Drake for the first time last night. Nice rewards for beating it.

I'm not at 200 hours yet, but at 135ish (which is about 30 over my second most played game of all time) I'm experiencing the same. I've barely even touched the late game, so all of the crisises are going to be new to me. I haven't even played the big meaty Alexis Kennedy penned Horizon Signal questline yet!

Because no UI can equal my revenge on my brother for secretly plotting the murder of my daughter while my sister tries to undermine my relationship with the Pope and my other brother puts a horse on the council?

This seems like an apt moment to mention that Stellaris has lasers.

Do you guys think a 1 system empire can be any fun at this point? Still push borders with frontier outposts and build stations on those other systems, but don't colonize outside of the system and don't make enemies cede planets to you.

I don't think there's quite enough juice in the planet management for me to have fun with that. The level of planet management works because the interesting decisions are spread out over several planets, but it's not quite as engaging as, say, a Civ single-city game. I also suspect you'd have trouble keeping up with tech and navy strength, but not having tried I don't know.

Also, Influence will put a hard limit on how many frontier outposts you can support, though there are Traditions now to help offset that.

Now, if you started with a ringworld or something, that might be interesting.

Yeah navy limit is based on population + spaceport size. To keep a decent navy you would have to run far over the navy limit such that you would never be able to compete after a decade or two into the game.

I started a new galaxy with the 1 system intent but the nearby green planet in my territory going to waste got me out of that idea pretty quickly.

Oh, that gives me an idea for one way the 1-system thing could be more workable: if you turn the habitable planets setting way down, so that there are fewer planets overall.

The game director has said that whilst Unity is specifically designed to make "tall" empires more workable, he doesn't want them to be able to compete in general with "wide" empires. The unity mechanic is intended to make steady growth work better than really rapid expansion.

I've just essentially finished a unity/shroud game with utopia (fanatical pacifist + spiritualist), and things have fizzled out a bit. I put in lots of cuddly aliens so I could get a few more achievements (it looks like achievements are broken in 1.5 at the moment), and the Unbidden have been killed, but there are 4 pretty friendly federations around and nobody is attacking anyone else. I don't know what to do next with my 200k fleet.

Weirdly, I suspect Expansion might be a good tree for a 1 system empire, at least the half of the tree that let's you build frontier outposts at twice the distance and reduces the cost of maintenance for them. You could lean pretty heavy on that to make up for some lost production. And if you give yourself some influence pumping civics to go with it you could probably do one planet with lots of frontier outposts and still have enough influence left over to keep recruiting new leaders.

It's not made clear, but there's a perk in the expansion tree that reduces tradition cost, which means the increase in unity cost for perks based on number of planets. I got it very late (I had to rush for other perks first to deal with an awakened fallen empire and the endgame crisis and it made a massive difference to the amount of unity I needed for the next perk - 60k down to 45k. Getting that earlier would have made a big difference.

Austin, Rob, and Danielle play Stellaris.

Oh yeah.

Nice. Danielle dipping her toes in strategy is long overdue.

heeeelp. something's gone horribly wrong.

Just booted up my most advanced save file and while the interface is still intact and usable and the music still plays, the galaxy / system map is just a slightly faded out and empty starfield and seems to have completely frozen. Same goes for any new games I start as well.

Far as I know nothings changed or updated since I last booted it up (this morning) so I'm at a loss to explain why it's all of a sudden started to bork out on me.

Any ideas?

When Paradox games do odd things like that, it's usually been a problem with mods for me. Do you have any mods installed you could try disabling?

nope, no mods. just the vanilla game + some of the DLC and the utopia expansion.

*and for whatever reason I just booted it up to take a screenshot of the problem...and it's working again. o_0
so...no freakin' clue what happened there.

Always try turning it off and back on again!

So have people reached a consensus yet on Utopia? It is actually worth $20?

Yes, it's a huge improvement.

I spent about 15 minutes in 1.5 (no Utopia yet) and there's already a lot of changes coming through - your capital building no longer generates food, but food is now empire-wide; the unity and civic systems offer different empire strategies - I was able to very quickly get my leaders to 3 star experience which boosted research and surveying a lot.

My suggestion would be to play 1.5 first and wait for Utopia to go on sale. Not like you are going to get into the Dyson Sphere and Ring World stuff any time soon, unless you are running on Fastest and playing hours upon hours of Stellaris at a time.

So yeah, got a good game going finally but things just got interesting.

Spoiler:

The Unbidden have arrived and are slowly wiping out other races. Thankfully they are on the other side of the galaxy, but so far my fleets haven't been able to stop or even slow them. No matter what I throw at them it's never enough due to multiple 60-70K fleets all attacking at once. The last attack I tried was three 100K fleets that were overwhelmed with sheer numbers. Anyone have a good tech load out to deal with them? I did some checking and it looks like their ships are all shields and no armor. I'm thinking maybe tach lances, torpedoes, and giga cannons.

Seems to me there is more to do in the beginning game, with factions, population rights and such. I've got a game going with a symbiont slave species, and I'm messing around with slowly advancing the rights of the slaves. Sure enough, I've developed an egalitarian faction, and a "beat them early and often" pro-slavery faction.

Also I like the greater tech varieties, and the new Traditions (social focus choices which remind me of EUIV).

I dunno, tech only gets you so far.
My draws are all pretty similar at this point, but I guess I'm late game.

I haven't touched it yet. It landed the day I finished The Witcher 3 and started Mass Effect: Andromeda. Looking forward to it, but I'm currently exploring a different galaxy with more romance options and pointless fetch-em quests.

In the upcoming Adams patch:

I think Banks/Unity has been a huge improvement, though some is probably the earlier patches as well, as I've not played since just after release. I never got out of the mid-game at release because I found it a bit dry, but in my first game since then I'm now approaching the late-game, with most of my storylines wrapping up just as some end-game events start firing.

Terraforming already op, this tech cost is way too low for me.

Stellaris actually has more romance options than you'd expect. GRAVITY IS DESIRE, YO!

It also has its share of pointless planets!

Wow, so there is literally no way to land on that planet. I haven't seen that yet. Isn't there a terraform tech? If terraform doesn't currently correct that type of planet, it would be an interesting tech add to allow that type of planet colonization.

Terraforming gets rid of all the blockages so yeah that's the only way to colonise it.
