Going, Going, Gone! - Pile of Shame August 2015

Pages

Last month of summer and then school is back in session and the fall releases start coming out in earnest. Let's see if we can't knock a game or three off the pile before reloading during the holidays.

If you're interested, m0nk3yboy, has the 12 month pile plan thread over here.

A quick reminder, in order to be considered "Pile of Shame" the game needs to be at least three months old. Otherwise, it's just a new game you haven't gotten to playing yet.

Also, if you are curious about some of the previous threads, Picks of the Pile, etc... Please go here and check out the spreadsheet I setup.

Let's get on to the games!

This month's Pick of the Pile is

Alien: Isolation

"HOW WILL YOU SURVIVE?

Discover the true meaning of fear in Alien: Isolation, a survival horror set in an atmosphere of constant dread and mortal danger. Fifteen years after the events of Alien, Ellen Ripley's daughter, Amanda enters a desperate battle for survival, on a mission to unravel the truth behind her mother's disappearance.

As Amanda, you will navigate through an increasingly volatile world as you find yourself confronted on all sides by a panicked, desperate population and an unpredictable, ruthless Alien.

Underpowered and underprepared, you must scavenge resources, improvise solutions and use your wits, not just to succeed in your mission, but to simply stay alive." (Official Site)

I'm going to try to at least beat Perfect Dark (N64/Multi) and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS3/Multi) this month. We'll see if I have time for more but I'd be happy with just that

Going to carry over Bloodborne (PS4), Red Dead Redemption (multi) and adding Pier Solar and the Great Architects (multi), and Alien: Isolation (multi).

A-ha! The August plan!

Carried over from July: Half of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (PC)
Adding in August: Bastion (multi)

(Not adding right now but holding Deux Ex, Human Revolution (PC) in the wings in case, by some miracle, I get the other two done. Most likely is a possible start on Deus Ex by month end - it has been sitting in my pile for a very long time...

I started The Banner Saga (PC) a bit ago. Guess I'll try to finish it this month.

I will declare two for this month:

  • Yoshi's Island (Multi) -> Playing the SNES version, not really started
  • Azure Gunvolt Striker (3DS) -> Almost done, going through the boss rush, and I'm getting my butt severely kicked.

Well, I know I'll get through at least one game this month, thanks to SallyNasty's Community Let's Play:

Alien: Isolation (multi)
Destiny (multi) **Story Missions Completed**
Way of the Samurai 3 (multi)

Count me in for Alien: Isolation (multi)!

After a two month break during which I played ....nearly nothing, put me down for Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny (PS2) please.

For starters, I'm carrying over Brütal Legend (Multi) and I'll be adding The 11th Hour (PC I think, sorry Hemi, I'm on phone). I haven't quite made up my mind what else to declare just yet.

Edit: Nevermind, I finished 11th Hour (which is indeed PC).
And it's so awful. Those are four hours of my life I'm never getting back. XD

The list should be current.

I will go ahead and re-add

Fallout: New Vegas (multi)

though not really sure if I will end up completing it. I just haven't really been in the mood due to DLCs that keep me trapped in one area until completion.

Seeing as July was a Pile failure for me, I'll be carrying over and, in an act of bold hubris, adding one title to the roster:

Deus Ex: Human Revolution (multi)
Epic Mickey 2 (multi)
The Witcher 2 (multi)

I feel more confident about getting through these, or two of them at the very least, this time around.

Slow player here... was thinking about making this "the month of PSN" and using it to mop up as many of my short games as I could (Aaru's Aawakening, Counterspy, Papo & Yo, Rain, The Swapper, Transistor, Unfinished Swan...) but I know I won't get to them all. I'm midway through Papo & Yo and The Swapper; anybody want to sell me on some others? Interested in playing them too, along with me?

TRANSISTOR!!!!!!!!! So, so sooooo good... Drop everything else and play that instead!! Was my GOTY last year.

I'll hop on with Papo y Yo. I've got it on Steam and only played about 45 minutes.

Edit - I lied, I've only played about 20 minutes.

Since it seems like my gaming time is going to be exclusively on my vita for a while I want to play some of these indies that I have on here so put me down for

Hotline Miami 2
Lone Survivor
Retro City Rampage
Rogue Legacy

It's very short, so you're probably already at 25% complete. And I'm only just slightly kidding. I loved it when I played it though, and the music is really great.

Welllll, I won't drop the games I'm partway through, but... put me down for Papo & Yo (PS3), The Swapper (PS4/cross-platform), and Transistor (PS4/cross-platform).

FTFY

Mark me off for Perfect Dark (N64/Multi). It's hard to believe that I only have 10 more games left on my backlog (that I intend to finish). Granted, half of those probably will take me about 40-100 hours each. But it's nice to feel like there's a possibility that I could clean out my pile. A girl can dream

I like the idea of clearing off a PS3 Plus game. The days of the game system in the back room are coming for the Playstation. Hanging out with ole PS2 and Top Gear (the primary purpose of the SNES).

I have guests in town still through the weekend enjoying the children before we lose them to books and minecraft all day. I will carryover Dark Souls and add Papo & Yo when I need breaks. I installed it but never explored it yet. I am very intrigued.

Thanks! I guess my language was incorrect. I also didn't know Papo & Yo was multi-platform!

I actually played Papo & Yo on the PC (Steam), and I enjoyed it. The music was pretty, the gameplay interesting, and I was intrigued by the premise (trigger warning for alcoholism and domestic violence).

I've been mulling it over, and I'll be declaring these other games for August:
Among the Sleep (Multi)
Valiant Hearts: the Great War / Soldats Inconnus: Mémoires de la Grande Guerre (Multi)
FEZ (Multi)

Thanks Hemi

I think the air was very dusty around me when I got to the end of this one. In fact, the air has a tendency to get dusty when I think about it...

Yeah, I know I'll have to have the box of Kleenex ready when I play that one.

And Brütal Legend is down! 'Twas aaaaaaawesooooooome. On the GotY list for sure!

Sorry, these are the first things I thought of when I read this.

Can you also put me down for strider 2 and Ronin

Hey, don't apologize, CptD, I hesitated and wanted to add "most excellent!"

CptDomano wrote:

I support your first thoughts. That made me laugh.

I am on board still for Papo & Yo but I appreciate the trigger warning. The game gives it as well. The atmosphere in the beginning started setting me off a little bit but it is a personal experience thing. It feels extremely similar to the fantasies we created taking us out of the abusive reality.

So I've been playing through Hotline Miami 2 and I'm wondering did they slow down the game or was Jacket just faster than all the characters in this game. Because all of the executions seem to take longer and I end up dying before I finish them. Also are the levels bigger because I'm getting killed from off screen a lot
