King of Dragon Pass

King of Dragon Pass is out on Steam today. It's a remnant of the old Runequest fantasy game universe, with it's complicated social and theological history. First published in 1999, but little dependent on graphics, it's a season-based game which puts you in charge of a tribe in Dragon Pass, a region of the world Glorantha which is currently undergoing expansion and exploitation by a large number of other tribes as well as yours. You have to handle your tribe's economy and trade, manage it's growth and production, build it's fighting capabilities, placate (or arouse) the gods, deal with your neighbors and followers and basically handle whatever comes at you, knowing that your decision will likely have repercussions over time. It's not a modern F2P style management game; it's a serious game of strategy that will break you, many times, before you finally get comfortable with it.

It's a unique, fascinating game that deserves a place in everyone's library. It's been available on IOS for a while now; it's really good to see that updated version appear on Steam for mass consumption.

Enjoy!

This is one of the staples on my iOS devices. It's fantastic.

I think I've played through 1 year... wish I could get into it a little more. I don't particularly like games that make you flounder through a few failed games just to understand some basic repercussions of your actions that would, in most cases, be obvious.

Maybe I just don't like phone game that do it and I'd be better off on steam.

Either way, I'll try to boot it up again, soon.

Well, remember, it's designed for Runequest fans. They tended towards a kind of fanaticism about the lore.

I have the GOG version -- has the Steam version been re-whatevered?

Yeah, it's an "expanded" version of the game. A few extra events and some bug fixes.

Don't forget to Hero Quest, people!

That was the part of the game I could never get the hang of. I got very good at day-to-day stuff, but every time one of my people visited the God Realm, weird things happened and I couldn't get the myths to go the way they were supposed to.

Sometimes you don't want them to go the way they're supposed to: it's possible to get better, or at least different results out of some of them. There's some secret stuff that was never mentioned in any of the legends.

I don't claim to be an expert a hero questing, but I have gotten some...interesting results.
