GWJ Plays Rocket League

Every year there's a game or two that come out of nowhere, that I had no idea I should be excited about and that within days of launch has completely taken over my life. Right now, for me that game is Rocket League.

An incredibly simple concept – play soccer with rocket-powered cars – executed brilliantly, Rocket League is one of those wonderful games that you can understand within five minutes of playing, and then spend hour after hour refining its simple ideas. It is unabashedly fun, and deeply satisfying on numerous levels.

This weekend I spent some time playing Rocket League, and I've included here a couple of Let's Play episodes. I will tell you now, I am not a particularly talented player. Prepare yourself to witness both failure and lamentations on said failures. But despite my not doing particularly well – and this is a rare thing for me to say – I still had an amazing time playing.

I ... I didn't mean to watch the whole thing.

This game is great. I'm level 17 at this point (though that's a little misleading because I've been playing in a lot of private lobbies, which grant half xp). It's so rare that a game can make me feel competitive, but also still be fun when I lose. This one is incredibly fun even when losing.

I used to pooh-pooh Let's Plays. "Where's the fun watching someone else play?" I used to say.

Then I watched these and found them both thoroughly enjoyable.

Elysium plays Rocket League like I play indoor soccer. When in doubt, get back in D.

A friend of mine sent me a copy of this because we had too many people one night to play another game. Downloaded it and jumped in without having any clue what the game was even about. What a blast. Got MVP the first match, then could barely touch the ball the second.

This game has consumed me. I think about it at work. I can't get "Rocket Man" out of my head. I can't get to bed at a decent hour.

And I want to play more!

Gotta admit: I almost never play multiplayer games these days/years, but these videos pushed me over the edge. I caved and bought the game yesterday, then played for 4 hours straight last night, finally stopping well after 2 AM. The highlight of the night was the game in which I scored all 3 of my team's goals.

Watched a bit of this during my lunch break yesterday, Sean. Man, the joy... it is palpable. I was having fun because you were having so much fun.

You weren't doing so bad in the unranked matches, not at all! I might actually stand a chance of scoring a goal or two.

When I sit down to play Rocket League I too transform into a bit of a ultra-competitive child-monster. My wife has seen me enter this excited sweary mode many times already thanks to Destiny multiplayer. Rocket League is a lot more light-hearted. No dying or teabagging. Just really sick goals (and heart-breaking chokes)!

It usually involves me screaming "HRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!" and holding the controller in front of my body in an effort to will my car in front of the ball.

You mean, this doesn't happen in EVERY match? My league must be on the brink of relegation.
