Rocket League Catch All

The main reason I prefer competitive honestly is I get annoyed with the whole quitting, re-entering over and over again. In Competitive if you are down 0-1 most likely your teammates will stick around at least until 0-2 or 0-3 before the forfeit button comes into play. I'm all for forfeiting games that just aren't working in competitive but then score it as a win or loss and go to the next game. I don't like being down 0-1 and suddenly being on a team of bots, or being up 1-0 and suddenly facing one opponent and 2 bots. Winning or losing in that scenario is just very unsatisfying to me.

Agreed. I also still have major lag when someone joins or leaves. Game always freezes, sometimes for a couple seconds. Never fun.

And of course you're much more likely to walk into a blowout in casual.

Even more reasons to play solo duel (ranked and casual) then
- You can’t join a match that’s already a blowout
- No other players are joining/leaving mid match (except the opponent forfeiting)
- When you decide to give up on a match you are 100% in control of the forfeit and don’t have to hope your teammates agree
- No bots ever and no teammates to get frustrated at

A little over 2 weeks left before the season ends (April 7th). Anyone here still pushing for that next higher rank? I'm not

I’d love to see them add some more always available modes to the game. Let us play Heatseeker, Gridiron, and Labs the whole season. Give us 4v4 on the Throwback Stadium map. If they need to make room they can remove rumble

I’m hoping all the recent limited time modes and the hints from Lethamyr are them testing the waters for new always available modes.

Many months ago (has it been more than a year?) I challenged myself to get champ+ rank in every mode in the game (including alt modes) and at the time the only one I couldn't get was solo duel. This season I tried again and thanks heavily to the recent MMR changes by Psyonix in that mode it was really easy to get champ and keep ranking higher in solo duel. Now I'm looking for new challenges. I've made it to pretty high ranks in nearly every mode without using boost. What else can I do? I need new modes to play or new ways to play existing modes. I was joking around recently about trying to switch to keyboard and mouse but I think that might be too big of a challenge. That would be at least a little better than trying to get high ranks while playing on a Nintendo Switch in handheld mode

Not pushing for ranks, but still pushing for challenges. Still need about 80 assists and 100 goals, assists, or saves, I think. I hate ranks.

I finished last weekend. Still 2 free challenges not finished, but you don't have to get them all thankfully.

Crazy I've got my Diamond rank rewards, made a tournament final, and played a few extra modes and casual games, but still haven't hit the free wins challenge. 250 or whatever.

SAMSONIKS did a video about Marci and Azzy's "new mechanic". Some cameos in there from many RL personalities you might recognize. Marci and Azzy are active members on the Middle Aged Noobs discord.

Does anyone here play solo duel regularly? Why or why not?

New question then. Do you mostly play 3v3 modes or 2v2 modes (including the alt modes)? Why?

Llama-Rama is back starting this week (March 25 - April 9). At least this time the items don't look like a piñata.

There is finally a Huntress inspired Dominus decal but it's only in the 1000 credit bundle so no way I'm getting it. Has anyone seen/received a Dominus Huntress blueprint? What does it cost to make?

Edit: Dominus Huntress is in the store right now for 100 credits!

I tried one more time to play on Switch tonight. Since I got that Fixture S1 and could use my pro controller and hold the screen pretty close to my face...

And it just sucked. Can't see the ball far enough away to read it, can't get to any balls fast enough, just awful experience in general.

Uninstalled. I'll have to stick to PC

Increased input latency on console versions compared to PC sucks.

Every Switch controller I’ve tried including the Pro has mushy sticks with a wide dead zone. I tried using one of those USB dongles that will pair any Bluetooth controller to the Switch so I could play with an Xbone controller and use a tight dead zone again but the input latency seemed even worse.

It’s frustrating because I really really want handheld mobile RL even if it’s just for practice modes but playing on the Switch just doesn’t work for me.

Psyonix just announced a mobile version of Rocket League.

It’s not the same game. It’s stand-alone from the main game.

That's weird and interesting, could be fun. Although not being able to multi-touch the screen easily could really hurt your skill ceiling. Probably will need a controller!

I discovered yesterday that going into Free Play and repeatedly doing Dropshot kickoffs is a good way to practice fast aerials (hold boost, jump, aim), and my in-game aerial hits are getting more consistent. One weird thing I have noticed is that my actual Dropshot kickoffs don't seem to trigger the lightning crackle on the ball very often, even if I hit it straight on with boost, or try to tip down and hit with my front tires. The ball stays normal. Any good reason for that?

On console do you have access to custom training scenarios? Might be worth looking into if you do.

I do, I have several of those favorited as well.

It has hats and antennas and now even soundtracks but the cosmetic item Rocket League has always been missing is facial hair. Imagine your clean octane design with a goatee! You know you want that.

I played this for a good month or two after its initial release on PS4 back in...2015? But hadn't really touched it until a week or so ago when, I think prompted by promotion in Fortnite, I decided to download it for Xbox and play a couple of matches. I forgot how awesome this game is. I'm not good at it, but just having it installed on my Xbox I find that every time I go to play another game I do a quick match of RL first and another when I'm done. I've been having so much fun I ended up buying the season pass.

I do wonder if it's worth doing any sort of Youtube research in how to get good at this. I feel bad when I occasionally botch an open shot or an important save, I don't want to let my teammates down. And it can be embarrassing seeing a post-goal replay in which you speedily zip towards the opponent and the ball...only to fly past both as an opponent just taps the ball into the goal. Part of me wants to respond to that by Getting Good, part of me wants to respond by being more zen about it and not turning this into a task I need to conquer. I dunno. If there's any particularly good Youtube or similar resources folks recommend that feature simple tips, I would be interested.

One thing I'm surprised hasn't changed in the last 6 years is the replay displays. Having played several dozen matches in the last week or two, I can count on one hand the number of times all 6-8 players voted to skip a goal replay, no matter how pedestrian the goal. I wonder what would happen if they were to swap it to an opt-in instead of an opt-out, where the replay ends after 3 seconds unless one of the players votes to continue watching it. Am I seeing virtually every replay because every time a goal is scored the scorer just really wants to see it? Or are people just not paying attention to hit the Skip button?

Start with this:

It's a great explanation of fundamental positioning concepts.

Go through the in game training drills and practice those, and focus on making solid contact with the ball. Just focus on basics to start.

This Road to Supersonic Legend playlist by Lethamyr might be good, he progresses from Bronze all the way up to SSL and does a good job explaining what is happening at each level.

Finally, friend us up and come play!

Here's my curated playlist of YouTube vids for newish (or mid to lower ranked) players:

I'm definitely open for feedback on that playlist if you have any.

Spoiler:

My rant (top tips) about what most RL players actually need to work on is more useful once you've got the basics down and want to learn how to win

Awesome, thanks to you both. I'll definitely review and think about that stuff, hopefully without worrying too much about any of it

Rule #1 is have fun

The line between learning to get better and "making it work" is different for every person. But definitely work your way through the in game training tutorials here and there to get an idea of some goals to shoot for. I also recommend watching some videos on basic aerials and using dodge. Watch some pros play too, to get an idea of what's possible. The replays in our Discord chat are also really fun.

My wife and I are still Silver League and would love to play bad RL with you.

Haha man, pandasuit, I watched some of those videos and there was a degree to which it made me think "oh, I thought I sucked before, but now I *really* know I suck." The most disheartening thing was seeing explanation of how actually there are multiple different controls you can use to control your car in the air which was just like, ugh, I will never be able to do that, I know it! Aerials in general seem like a tall order for me, cool as it is to see pro players fly off the ceiling and score a goal from up high in the air. It wasn't that depressing, though, definitely some actionable suggestions in there and even a few things I actually am reasonably good about already.

One thing that is a little counterintuitive at first. You can't hit the ball opposite the direction you are moving. Unlike a person in a real soccer game, you can't collect the ball and then shoot it in some other direction. It's more like shooting a cue ball into another ball on a pool table. Practically that means you should try to keep the ball between you and the other net, so you can more easily hit it that way, and keep your car between the ball and your own net to block shots. If you need to hit the ball behind you, you have to speed past it and u-turn to get a good hit.

Ball control and shots are really about momentum and the hit box of your car. You have to be moving fast to make a fast shot, or slow for a gentle one, generally.

I always say the same thing.. don't worry so much about any fancy stuff. Fundamentals and positioning will get you very far in this game. If it makes you feel better, or gives you any inspiration, I'm sitting at Diamond 2, and I was once champ for an hour almost 100% solo queueing, and I've never watched a professional rocket league match on twitch (I admit I've left it on to collect rewards when that was a thing).

If you've never picked up a basketball in your life, watching steph curry or lebron james isn't going to make you a better player, nor is going out there and just lofting up 3s or trying to dunk when you don't even know how to shoot a free throw or make a basic layup.

Of course, its just a game, so just go out there and enjoy. When I'm bored or playing casual I'll try to do some panda-style freestyling.. and I always fail. I've just come to the conclusion that i'm too old and uncoordinated to execute those manuevers at least purposefully.

And I wish I screenshotted it, but nothing better represents low diamond play than my recent achievement of getting MVP but also Bench Warmer title.

Fundamentals, positioning, and game sense can certainly get you far. Of course it takes a lot of play time to learn the fundamentals and positioning. It's not like anyone gets those without some time playing and purposely trying not to just make the same mistakes over and over.

Yep... just play. Solo queing exposes you to so many different types of players that you have to learn to adapt. Its such a night and day difference playing there and when we do our casual matches, and little of that has to do with actual skill in making shots and all to do with folks having a better idea of where they are and where they should be.

No amount of training will prepare you for when both your teammates go chasing/cut you off into the defensive short-side corner. If competitive levels are your goal, knowing how to adjust and compensate for that will get you further than any amount of air dribble training.

I decided to uninstall last week after reaching the unfortunate conclusion that I wasn´t having fun anymore and yet kept grinding over and over endlessly trying to break into platinum 3 on ice hockey mode.
Last couple of days I was becoming less and less forgiving with teammates and rivals, with the constant barrage of whatasaves and wows every single game / play / every single team, with fewer and fewer exceptions finally got to me.
I also realized I was playing RL almost daily not because I particularly wanted to but most for the self-imposed grinding I mentioned earlier, trying to reach a "top" I don't think I'll ever be able to get to now, especially considering I don't want to play RL with a controller, it would be too much of a hassle to relearn it after a thousand+ hours of M&K.

Still, I love the game and don't rule out coming back later on, but for now I intend to go cold-turkey for a while.

Take a break, turn off chat, then come back and play with us. Turn off chat. Turn. Off. Chat. It's like asking for youtube comments in your game.
