Flaming shared this video on discord.

This has got to be the best 1v1 series of RL ever played so far. These are absolute experts of control and mind games playing 4D chess in RL. The mechanical control on display here is just phenomenal. There were moments (the end of the very last match for example) where I just sat with my jaw hanging open in awe of what I was seeing. I know it’s an hour long but if someone tried to make a highlight reel of this series it would be the same length. If you must only watch one part watch the last match starting at around 58:50 in the video.

That is so much prettier than my '64.

The last 1:30 of regulation and then OT of that 1v1 was insane.

Maybe Saturday I will lower the skill level of all the games.

Finally a video where some explains the mechanical button presses to control your movement while air rolling.

This is the kind of video I’d want to share outside the RL thread on GWJ because people reading here are likely already converted but I didn’t see an obvious place it would fit

There's a "Gaming Video Catch-All" thread: https://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/... It's probably welcome there.

How to break a slump in Rocket League

ApparentlyJack’s 2v2 and 1v1 videos are pretty good. I like his commentary.

Thanks. Really didn't know about the USB vs Bluetooth being slower. DS4Windows has adjustable polling rate for BT but not for USB. There are several topics on reddit where people can see the MS polling difference in DS4W. At least I'm going to check that and see how mine is.

I'm wary of installing this other software at the moment. But I might just try BT for the DS4 and see if that helps any.

Apparently DS4W supports Dualsense now too. I'm going to plug in later and see what it reports.

Bluetooth has lower average latency than USB for the DS4 but higher variability so while it will have lower latency more often on bluetooth it will also have higher latency more often and that may or may not cause issues with your mechanics. Personally I've been configuring everything I can for steady reliable input latency, not lowest possible peak latency. That way what I expect to happen will happen more often even if that makes my inputs slightly slower on average.

I'm also wondering if that is why I couldn't play on PS5. Maybe it was the input timing.

Or at least that in concert with whatever else was going on with FPS or I still don't know what. But I did try with DS4 a couple times too and it was still screwy.

IIRC the PS5 still plays RL at 60fps and has higher input latency than a PC running at 60fps.

Even on my Xbox Series X at 120fps/120hz the input feels noticeably more laggy than my PC at 120fps on the same 144hz display. It’s enough of a difference to throw off some of my mechanics. It’s def better than the Xbone X was at 60fps but still no match for a PC.

$15 for that new Ford truck in RL? WTF!?! Oh it comes with a few other items I'd never use too? Well that changes...nothing....

Cool commercials tho.

I wouldn't pay $15 for an actual Ford.

8 NEVER RELEASED things found in the game files of Rocket League

When I saw the new RL Ford commercial talking about freestyles I thought "cool commercial but not really a freestyle car". Turns out Ford put their money where their mouth is and sponsored a Freestyle Invitational tournament where top NA freestylers were using the truck and the winner gets a brand new real F-150.

First day was yesterday and you can watch the Twitch recording here:
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/926779462

Finals are on the 28th.

That RL Ford commercial "just you and the open road, and your team, and the other team, and the ball, and all the freestyle aerials and stuff":

Sorry Ford, I'm still not paying $15 for that truck. Maybe if it was a GMC Sierra....

Price is too high for me for the truck, but I wonder how it's sales are doing. If I were them I would have gone low price to get more of them out there.

In general, I've been pretty impressed with the Ford sponsorship. The ads are decent, the truck looks cool, and I think the cutaways of the truck towing off wreckage, delivering the ball etc during RLCS are pretty clever. I hope it's a successful partnership because I think I would pay $15 for a 2021 Mustang.

Had got up through gold rewards early in the season before I took a break. Got the itch this week and finished up plat and diamond the last two nights.

Still a D3 ceiling for me in any mode it seems.

Go for champ! Go for champ! Go for champ! Just, uh, avoid standard 3v3 because that playlist is a mess in high D low C right now.

After a few recent attempts I’m pretty comfortable saying I know the max rank I can comfortably get in ranked standard when using zero boost and playing with rando teammates.

Sure with the right luck I could push a little higher but not much. There definitely is a ceiling to how high I can go without boost with my current skill at the game. It’s significantly higher than the last time I tried tho so I feel good about it.

It’s been another great learning experience for me and I had a lot of fun.

One surprising part is that no one ever called me out for not using boost. I wonder if anyone even noticed.

I think I might try playing ranked 1v2 and 1v3 again next. It’s been a while since I did that challenge.

Just finished a zero boost run in doubles. New highest rank in that as well. Higher than I got in standard actually.

The reason is pretty obvious to me. In standard without boost (at the rank I got to) if I don’t immediately chase and slam the ball my teammates assume I’m not in control and multi-commit on it for no good reason. In doubles my teammate is far more likely to allow me to slow play the ball. I get A LOT of power shot goals across the field if my team lets me touch the ball. In standard when you setup a power shot or dribble/flick goal a teammate flies across and gives the ball away.

Not that anyone would watch and learn from it or anything but I actually think the process I use for playing without boost is really effective and points out critical mechanics to be in control of the ball and play very fast without any boost to help. Yeah it depends a ton on game sense and knowing what the highest percentage plays are but it focuses on the small mechanics that make the most difference in every game so it’s really good practice for those mechanics.

Now I’m curious to see how a zero boost solo duel run would go. I can’t win kickoffs and that might cost me a lot of goals.

Edit: Solo duel was easier than expected. Not having a teammate helps a lot so I don’t have to keep working around them. Managed to get to the same rank as I got in standard then I ran into a challenge and was losing some. Could probably push higher but I’m happy with that rank regardless. Turns out a lot of solo duel players get tilted against my slow zero boost style and forfeit. I can’t afford to make many mistakes without boost so it’s a tight play style with no risky plays. Lots of power shots and keeping control of the ball into safe 50s or flicks. Lots of forcing the opponent into tough spots to force mistakes and take advantage.

Out with the rank, what did you get mystery man?

Spoiler:

Plat 3 in standard and duel. Diamond 1 in doubles.

I’m really confident I could go higher in doubles and duel if I stuck with it. In standard it’s a little out of my hands so I’d have to be lucky.

Good thing I just count duel as a throwaway rank and use it to play 1-2 warmup games. Otherwise I'd be embarrassed.

I’m champ 2 in solo duel on my main account (using boost). I can only win at that rank when I’m absolutely on my game and not going for my usual high risk freestyles tho. Normally I just use solo duel as freestyle practice against a defender and drop rank like crazy. Lately I’ve been doing that in casual duel matches instead.

One thing I’ve noticed is that if I’ve been playing without boost for a while when I come back to my main and play any mode with boost I bring that very safe mindset with me and I win more matches than usual. Playing safe without boost really is good warmup for how I should play in all other modes if winning was my priority. Over time I start falling back into my freestyler mindset and going for clips tho. I win less but I have more fun.

If you use duel as warmup before playing other stuff you should try zero boost duel and playing safe. Might help you a lot when you go to other modes.

I'd probably have to modify it to no boost after kickoff. I think giving up any easy goals there would frustrate me, even not caring about rank.

Sure. Most people can’t hit the net on kickoff for crap other than the one straight forward kickoff and for that one you just double jump straight up to block it. At higher ranks I had to switch up kickoff approaches a few times as some better players adapted to me faking them all. For almost all except the straight ones you can get in front of the ball with 2 quick flips. Most people have crappy slow inaccurate kickoffs at those ranks tho so if you fake it and go back they just hand you the ball. In all of my zero boost games only one opponent could consistently score off kickoffs and he was absolutely not a plat player because he was doing actual good ceiling shots and consistent fast kickoffs. That’s the only player I completely lost to in zero boost duel.
