Rocket League Catch All

My RL club (PBZ) decided they wanted to sign up for the RLRS qualifiers this season. That’s the pro league right under the big RLCS one.

I thought, ok we have some Grand Champs in the club so we might win some matches and I can sign up as a substitute. Worth a shot.

Then they told me they wanted me on the primary roster not as a sub. I had a good laugh at that but apparently they weren’t kidding. We have 2 GCs on the team (Bozo and Willi) and the other team member (Nyx) is a champ 2.

So we’re signed up for 2 of the 4 qualifier rounds in September and I expect to get destroyed. Should be fun tho. Hopefully we run into some of the pro level players so at least we’re losing to people we recognize.

Would also like to know if the games will be streamed. Good luck, either way! It'll be a great experience no matter what, I'm sure.

Panda: Awesome! Let us know man, would love to spectate.

Pizza: Lets do it!

I doubt many, if any, RLRS qualifiers will be streamed on official channels as there is just too many and we aren’t the matches people are excited to see.

Nyx might stream ours on his Twitch https://www.twitch.tv/beast_boy6661 but I’d rather he didn’t because he gets distracted paying attention to chat.

Worst case I can save the replay files and upload them to ballchasing so you can view there or download and view in game.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have no expectations and am just in it for the experience. I like competition and this should be the best I’ve ever had.

Our qualifiers are on Sept 14th and 21st. Qualifiers start at 10am PST and run all day but I don't know specific times for our matches yet.

I will be disappointed if Nyx doesn't stream and I will let him know. GLHF

Is there anyway to make groups before matches with people on other mediums? PC and Xbox1 for ex?

Yeah, on pc you can invite console players using the Rocket ID, then go play from there.

Same process on any device now

Remember when car hitboxes were unique? I forgot how long ago that change happened. I use lots of cars so I never really rely on one hitbox anyways but I have friends that had their main completely ruined by that change.

TBH I think that change was for the better. You can't really "balance" hitboxes in this type of game. That's why you always saw pretty much one car in all the high level stuff because that had the best hitbox for the game. Now you can get a variety of looks during play that doesn't effect gameplay.

This doesn't make sense to me. He says everyone uses the Octane because the cars are all the same, but if people think the octane hitbox is the best, why aren't they using the other octane hitbox cars like the merc? I agree that the hitboxes should be different for each car, but I also think we'd still have 1 or 2 hitboxes that everyone feels is the best and that's all we'd see.

The same handful of cars are used by the majority of people before and after the change and those are the cars who’s hitbox stayed the same so for most people nothing really changed anyways.

Octane was never objectively the best hitbox and still isn’t. Players kept using it because they were comfortable with it and no other hitbox had enough benefits that justified re-learning a hitbox. After the standardization half the cars in the game had the octane hitbox and yet everyone still uses octane. It’s definitely not because it is the best looking car with that hitbox.

Thing is the hitboxes still feel different because the cars look different and you use visual information when you play even if you know the invisible box is the same. I’ve been a dominus main for years and yet I hate nearly all dominus hitbox cars except dominus because they feel wrong (usually because of the visual nose of the car).

The real question is would it really change much for anyone if they didn’t standardize the car hitboxes. I’m not sure it really mattered for most people. I haven’t seen any indication that many people ever got excited about new cars for more than a moment or changed their car much once they’d picked one.

High level solo duel is the only place I see people significantly changing how they play because of an opponents car choice. That has always been true. In the other games he describes in the video your opponents character makes a large impact on your strategy. In Rocket League it almost never does (for most players).

Even now most people don’t seem to notice the difference between cars in their regular play. They would have to introduce a very different car for people to suddenly notice that the car hitbox matters.

I’ve been talking to some friends recently about why we keep coming back to our go to game for years and years and don’t foresee a future where we would choose to stop. Some play a specific roguelike. Some play a specific esport. One guy was into speed runs. In all cases we’ve stuck with one game for years. In all cases no one said it was because of the new things that keep getting changed. We like refinement and variety yes but they are not the reasons we stay. We stay because we enjoy improving ourselves and the game is a fun arena to do so in. I don’t know if that is the way most people play these games but if it isn’t I’m really curious why people keep coming back and playing the same repetitive game for years.

Update: of course that completely leaves out the question of why do new people start playing these games and what do they want. Are those people excited about the possibility of new cars or are they so overwhelmed just getting into the game that isn’t even something they think about. I cannot speak with any experience on this one as I’m not sure I’ve talked to a new Rocket League player more than a little in a long time. There must be new players as the player base isn’t going down and there are some people moving on. I guess we’ll find out what they want “when” RL goes free to play on Epic Store later this year as that will inject a ton of new people into the game.

Has the free to play thing been officially announced or is that just speculation. I mean it's seemed that they were heading that way for a while and it makes complete sense for this game, however I don't think I've seen an official word on this.

No official announcement, but it's heavily tipped to coincide with the switch over to the Epic Gamestore. Although, saying that, I wouldn't be surprised if they give it a year with a price in the Epic Gamestore before going down that route, although Epic do seem keen to appeal.

Speculation. It seems pretty likely though.

They’ve been actively working to have a stable income independent from game sales. They sold to a company that gives them stability and has shown great success at making money on “free” games and they’ve adopted most of the ways that company makes money. They already fund the company primarily off dlc and keys as new game sales are not huge.

My guess is they make a basic version of the game free to play with all the modes and functions but less built in cars and customization. They sell the standard customization we got with the game for a fixed price. They sell dlc and other customization on top of that as they do now. If they switch to that on all platforms the only people worse off new purchasers on Xbox as they got the most content in the current base game.

There are holes in those theories for sure but they are still plausible as far as I can tell.

Question: do your kids play and enjoy Rocket League?

Mine (4 and 8) both play at various levels. My 4yo is still figuring out controls in freeplay but my 8yo has moved on to 1v1 against bots and I think is ready for some online 1v1.

both my kids played on ps4 but it never really stuck so moved on

Apparently I have to choose a tag. You guys know me best on GWJ. Any suggestions?

I’m just a lurker here but I’ll throw one out:

“Take the shot!”

lol. I definitely appreciate the suggestion but that is probably my least favorite quick chat in RL.

Whenever a random teammate uses that quick chat for anything other than kickoff I mute them. I've found overuse of that quick chat to be a very reliable indicator of players that have nothing useful to say.

I started playing on Xbox around 7 months after the game released on PC so I never played this version but my memory of the game back then is pretty fuzzy so I'm not sure how much different my experience was from what he's showing here.

I definitely never played the game in alpha but I've seen clips. Did it really look like this or is that a mockup? I've seen video of some of the game experiments they came up with before they settled on Rocket League and they look nothing like what we have now. At one point it was literally a car battle game.

Scroll to the bottom of the official videos page and take a look at some of those classic clips

I asked and YouTube provided. Here is what Rocket League looked like in alpha. It is visually an odd mix between SARPBC and RL. The Octane (Pepe) is pretty similar but rounder than the final RL Octane.

Compare that to SARPBC here

This is what Octane looked like in SARPBC:

Beta 1 started to look a lot closer to the initial release of RL

Beta 2 was basically the same visually as the first release of RL

Edit: I converted a lot of the videos in this post to links so it was less annoying to load but you can still get to the videos if interested.

Man, that just makes me miss graph paper...

(Also, a genius life hack).

How is everyone getting on with the new season? I'm a still stuck around the lower Diamond leagues. I was Diamond 2 but have dropped to Diamond 1. I'm finding the odd trouble with the pace of games, plus my air shots aren't becoming as consistent as I'd like them to be! I think I need to work out a better training schedule.

Yeah dropped from Diamond 3 to 2, rough early season for me.

I've been without Rocket League for a little over a week due to being essentially homeless for a bit as I sit between houses. The withdrawls are serious, hoping to be back online sometime next week though.

Sort of just spend about 10-15 minutes doing some of the things I'm weak on, but there isn't really much organisation to it, and I still fall into the trap of playing more games than training when I want to get better! I think it's more I'm still struggling with the sideways flying, although my aerials are becoming a slight bit better in games (I make contact more often than not, rarely missing the ball).

We started our first qualifiers run for RLRS this morning. Streaming here: https://www.twitch.tv/beast_boy6661

Both our GCs were able to make it so I subbed out for one of them. It's Nyx's team so he stayed in. Series are best of 3 with a winners and losers bracket so if you lose 2 series you're out.

We were winning the first match for the first 4 minutes then lost it in overtime. Second match we were down much of the game but ended up losing by 1. That dropped us to the losers bracket.

We won the second series because the other team didn't show up.

We won the second game of the third series so it went to 3 games but we lost in the end. That ended our first qualifier run.

So we did about what I expected. Maybe better because we did win 1 match. I can't count the second series as anything because we won by default.

Jacob (former NRG player) was in our series pool but we would have had to win some to face him.

Next weekend (21st) we are doing a second qualifier attempt.

Recording (without audio) of the matches is here (starting at around the 30 minute mark for the first series and 1:12 for the third series):

Good luck.

I haven’t reached any of my season goals yet but I’m headed in the right direction so far. I want to spend most of October playing other things so I’m trying to finish my RL reward wins soonish. It’s taking longer than usual since I was trying to do them all in solo duel.

I finally managed to get a couple friends together for some Snowday so I switched to that for a bit and I might stick to that for the rest of my reward wins if I can get that team together more often. I just can’t solo queue Snowday without losing my mind.
