Rocket League Catch All

I did a thing! It won't last, and I doubt I'll get the requisite 10 wins to get a Champ Reward, but does still feel good.

And hopefully this at least serves as some inspiration that anyone can actually achieve this. I would say the only "advanced" (and I use that term loosely) skill I consistently do is Fast Aerial.

The only "tactics" i try to employ consistently are a) defending far post b)knowing when to just give up on the ball and giving way for someone else to fix my mistake and c) actively avoiding being the 2nd (or god forbid 3rd) person into a corner.

- I almost never do Training... usually only when waiting for someone to finish their match or a spot to open in a GWJ game, and even then I'm just hitting the ball around. I have one downloaded training in my favorites (one with wall shots) and out of the 30 or so shots that are set up in there, I've never gotten past the 7th or 8th before I get bored.

- I play with all chat, including team quick chat, OFF. While you may miss one key team chat on a faceoff every 10 games, you will miss 100% of the BS that occurs in any online game, which I think only serves to frustrate you.

- Half of the things I see posted or hear in discord I have no clue what they are... half flip, flip reset, wave-dash, heck someone had to explain to me what "Rule 1" was. I have zero intentional turtle or backward goals.. not because I don't want to rub it in.. because I don't know how to purposefully do them. Just focus on fundamentals and positioning, that will get you where you want to go (provided you don't want to be GC).

- I've never actively watched more than 30 minutes of pro rocket league, and couldn't name a player or team if I had to. If its fun for you to watch, then by all means do.. but just like "real" athletics, there is no learning from Osmosis. I can watch Michael Jordan play for 10,000 hours straight and I still won't be able to dunk a basketball. Except for the highest levels of RL, You do not need to play like a pro RL'er to get into whatever rank you want to get to.

- I am happy to quit after losing 2 comp matches in a row, or 3 out of 4. I don't have the vegas mentality of "just another win or two and I'm back to even". Happy to stop and play another game or find something else to do.

In short, just play the game and have fun.

Congrats!

Congrats Carlbear! I hope to get there someday too. Probably once all the good players get bored and leave for another game.

Congratulations, Carlbear95! Nice to see a breakdown as well of the way you play.

Congrats, Carl!

You sound just like me for all of that extra stuff. And I know we were the same rank most of last year. There's hope for me yet.

Also, don't be afraid to have Panda help you secure some of those 10 wins. I got that little push when I first hit diamond but I've kept it on my own ever since.

RL is free to play this weekend on PC and Xbox. Get ready for the new influx of PC smurfs.

Congrats Redneck! You people need to slow down; no one is going to care if I ever manage to make it to Champ at this rate :D.

^ that name is awesome. does he also spam the "In Position" emote all game? hilarious.

Sometimes he forgets.

Sad

Whenever I feel like the worst rocket league player ever I watch these.

Huzzah. I got my diamond rewards in hockey last night. I got close to falling back to platinum with a tense 0-0 seven minute overtime win at diamond 1 division 1 just to make it exciting.

I only knew about 1 of these

I have had weird flicker in-game the last few days. Mostly in menus, in matches it is somewhat rare, but the moment the score menu comes up after a match it is back, and in the start menu as well.
Anyone have seen something like that in the game? I kinda hope it isn't my GPU dying :/

After some more testing, it disappears if switching to borderless windowed, only happens in fullscreen mode. Thought Gsync might be the cause, but it didnt affect any of it.

Have you tried using the framerate limiter to lower your framerate? I've seen a couple posts where people mentioned that using the exact framerate that their Gsync monitor supports can cause this but lowering their framerate (using the in game framerate limit) fixed it.

Borderless windowed mode in Windows 10 does some frame buffering that is a lot like vsync so that might be what is fixing the flickering. Unfortunately it adds input latency so there is a tradeoff.

Are you using a certified Gsync monitor or a Freesync monitor that is Gsync compatible?

Yeah I have always limited the framreate - at 141 vs the 144 max for the monitor. Maybe I should try to lower it. Has been fine before though. Monitor is certified gsync.

Edited: Tried to lower the fps limit further to 120 fps, didn't change anything.

Borderless window causes delay? No wonder I suck!

Yeah, I play all games in borderless, except Rocket League, I need every boost I can get, imaginary or real!
So, that flickering might really be restricted to full screen, guess I'll have to test something else too :/

Another weird thing, cant take screenshots in Rocket League. Neither with Steam screenshot key or windows.

Hmm. Not sure what else to try. Might be worth asking in RL subreddit. Are you getting a consistent framerate at the limit you set?

As an aside, it’s been shown pretty thoroughly by Rocket Science that using a framerate that is a multiple of 60 gives you a more consistent input latency in RL. Higher framerate does have lower min latency but it fluctuates per frame if you don’t use a multiple of 60 and will be inconsistent. My monitor is also 144hz but I limit to 120 FPS for this reason.

Video explanation here:

He talks specifically about the benefit of 120 fps over 144 fps at around the 12 minute mark but I think the whole video is worth watching if you want to understand what is really happening here (and why 60fps is horrible no matter your monitor refresh rate).

Are you using overlays? Maybe try disabling those. Including Xbox Game Bar that recently became more intrusive in Windows 10 update. Bakkesmod. GeForce experience. AlphaConsole. GYG. Discord. Any one of those could be the culprit as well. I have found that disabling hardware accelerated mode in Discord and GYG makes things more consistent for me.

Yes

Stele wrote:

Maybe?

Will just have to try experimenting a bit I guess, thanks for the ideas. It is quite weird how it is much more extreme if it is a still picture (menus) though.

Will try 120 fps. Framerate is usually not 100% consistent at 141, it's around 139-141 most of the time.
Xbox game bar is off, Discord is on, but I dont think it is active unless you are in a channel with someone.
Deactivated Discord hardware acceleration, doesn't seem like something you'd want on regardless.

Made a short video, maybe it might make it clearer.
RL flickering
The constant flickering on the whole screen is just the recording. But the real flickering can mostly be seen at the bottom and the black background on the right side.

FYI it's double XP weekend again, started last night, through Monday.

It looks like it is a solid bar at the bottom that flickers in that clip. Is it just that piece at the bottom or does it vary?

Also visible in the random white lines in the 'news' box to the right. Same lines also appear in the menu buttons to the left, outside the recording. I guess this explains why I dont se anything during games, if it is only visible on these menu elements.
I just tried opening the "Play online" menu, which takes up most of the screen. Here the flicker happens everywhere. But it seems like that UI element covers the full screen, as the background where your car is gets darker, so probably still consistent with only the UI flickering.
Or, well, it apparently also happens on the 'boost' UI element in matches, just not very noticeable.

Just tried running another game in full screen (since, as said before, I never really do that), but there is nothing to see there so far, not in black areas or anywhere else.

Oh well. Just wanted to hear if it was a known issue or something in a recent patch, since I hadnt played for a short while. At least it doesnt seem like its a dead GPU, and the game itself still seems playable just fine.
