Rocket League Catch All

I am just a boost whore and sometimes dive for the big boost to try and get back faster. But then I know I'm getting in the way of teammates or they suspect I'm going to turn back since I'm close to ball and maybe don't make a move.

Was a good visualization of some of the problems in that video. I played a few games very intentionally focusing on that last night with good win/loss success.

That would be a false assumption.

Maybe champ level then?

Do you think it's because people don't know better, or people just don't care and want to be the one to score the goal? I would think by plat/diamond level, most people have played the game enough to know better and just don't care.

I relatively often rotate near post because I want to try to make it harder for the opposite team to get a clear shot. But then I'm also awful, so there probably is some kind of correlation.
It feels like a rare occurrence that I actually collide with teammates because of it. It certainly might make them not want to take the shot though, which is not good...

maybe high diamond its better.. I don't think the actual ranked level means that much. I don't know everyone's rank in the normal GWJ group, but for the most part I feel that everyone rotates well enough (maybe I'm the one who doesn't?). Also, since this group plays often enough I think we just get more used to everyone's play style.

If you're playing ranked with pubbies (I do) your pretty much getting new teammates every round and everyone has different tendencies. If you just took 2 other rando's even at gold level but you played 5 games with them I'd say by game 5 you'd be doing a lot better regardless of individual skill or situational awareness level.

Not a wrong thought, but if everyone is rotating correctly, there should already be someone ready to defend the near post. If you are truly last defender you should do whatever you can to try to slow the progress down. But if there is already a teammate back and in defensive position, it is best for that person to know for certain you will not try to cut on the ball so they can make a play knowing you will have their back if they miss.

Not sure if this was discussed, but it looks like the new friend system and rocket ID will be launching next week.

to celebrate all the og ps4 folks should join us for Bottle Rockets. Show off those rank rewards.

Speaking of OG:

When did you GWJers get into RL and what was your first platform? I started on Xbox at the start of 2016.

Spoiler:

I remember seeing an early trailer when it came out on PC and thinking that it looked cool but I didn't play a lot of sports games and I wasn't in a hurry to get it. I didn't have a PS4 back then so no free copy for me. I did have an Xbone though and when the game came out on Xbox in early 2016 a bunch of my friends were looking for something casual to play when we weren't playing our more serious competitive games (lol) so we picked it up. They mostly dropped off after a couple months but I kept at it and haven't stopped since (thousands of hours later). I got a copy on PC during season 3 but none of my friends played on PC so I still mostly played on Xbox until maybe season 5 when I switched to primarily playing on PC. I still sometimes play on Xbox with old friends and my kids play on Switch.

Looks like I bought it 4/26/16 and have been a PC player from the start, best $13 I every spent!

Started on PS4 through PSN+
August 2015 - but already switched to PC the month after. Remembered it as I played for much longer on PS4, but I guess that was "only" in hours played, not in days passed

I never play competitive multiplayer games, so had in no way expected to like this. But it is probably in my top 3 most played games ever now.

It was after about 3 or 4 weeks of a lot of podcast talk here that I knew it was good. I want to say that was fall 2015? I went to a friend's house and he had it on PS4, after a few moments I was hooked. Jumped in with the crew that tplayed it here and had a great time!

August 2015 for me, PC. It was just after the podcast crew raved about it and I think I found it for a slight discount on a non-Steam site. I didn't realize it's been 3 and a half years, and I'm about to crest the 1,000 hour mark.

Funny thing was the next summer I bought Overwatch thinking it would be the next Rocket League to suck all my time. I played heavily for a little while and still dip back in occasionally, but Rocket League turned out to be the true perennial. Only TF2 can hold a flame for me against Rocket League in terms of sheer hours and longevity over time.

Of course, since Steam didn't track hours until 2009, those first two-ish years of TF2 are unrecorded, which means RL has overtaken TF2 for tracked hours played, though not for real hours played. Not yet at least.

Aug 2015 PC. A little over 2000 hours in now and still love it. It was in the dying days of TF2 I was looking for the new GWJ game. I watched Gumbie and I don't remember who play a game, because I kept seeing Rocket League pop up on my friends list. Bought the game and got immediate invites to games. Had no idea what I was doing but loved it anyway. I remember when I found ball cam and thought "oh thank god" I can see where the ball is now.

Aug ‘15. My introduction to the GWJ community. Had been listening to the conference call for years as a lurker, wanting to find a hobby to spend my time after my divorce. The CC mentioned the game, and I finally convinced myself to get over my social anxiety enough to pop into chat one day and hang out in one of the private rooms. Group met every night. Remember talking in the forums about having a weekend thing to try to bring in new people, with Amoebic spearheading the community push as usual. She asked the group what to call the Saturday get together. I posted a YouTube video about alcohol fueled bottle rockets, and we all of a sudden had a name for the weekly hangout. Honestly was more about hanging out with the people at the beginning than the game itself.

I sadly don't really know so I'm not help to this question. I started splitscreen with BEPNewt on his PS4 for the occasion I was over there. Eventually, I picked it up nearly two years later (probably, ish). The PS4 community was pretty great. Accidentally tried it on PC and it was almost impossible for me to go back to console. I don't know how to tell when I started? My PS4 isn't hooked up and I'm probably not going to.

I recall some great times when I first joined. mwdowns convinced me to join a gwj session one night but I didn't have a mic so I cobbled together something that might work. Nope, nothing but static and noise for you all and so the jokes began that I was an actual bear.

I also recall the game where Darkensky came in and someone called him Dark in ski, huh? Is that Russian?" Not sure why but it cracks me up to this day.

Also, a game where another great line but not sure who said it, after either a great goal or massive wiff someone said " hey did you all know there is a rocket on this thing ?"

Do we still do bottle rockets or anything anymore?

Yep Bottle Rockets is still a thing, but now it's small enough we just take over a pub 3v3 server. Hopefully with Rocket ID we can get the band back together. I miss the chaotic voice chat of 3 or 4 games going at once.

Oh come on you really just want 8 people so we can play Rumble.

If we get 8 we’re playing Chaos. Red loves playing Chaos.

Red is the alien to our chaos play, you barely hear him coming to kill you from behind.

I would love for a 4v4 competitive mode. Just for those times when I'm in a party of 3 when a "4th wheel" jumps on.

How many hours is everyone up to now? I'm going to hit 600 probably this month. That is about 450 hours more than I have into any other game in my steam library.

3 v 3 or 2 v 2

all else = worst mode ever

I assume they mostly don’t know as most people I talk to who rotate badly seem to think they are doing it correctly and are kinda oblivious to it.

A lot if I add all my accounts on all platforms. Not sure I want to know how many.

I want ranked 4v4 on that anniversary map. That would be awesome.

I've probably mentioned, but I got RL when it was free on PS Plus. I messed about with friends on the game and enjoyed it, but largely forgot about it.

Last summer (2018), I got a bit bored with PUBG and someone suggested I get Rocket League. I was hesitant at first, but I'm so glad I double dipped. 231 hours currently on the Steam hour tracker!

What is the relationship between casual MMR and competitive MMR? My casual is like 1150 but my competitive is only about 750. I do notice if I play a bunch of casual and then jump into competitive I can feel a difference in the speed of the game, however since 750 is Plat1 I'm guessing 1150 would be Champ level and I'm obviously not that in casual.

I’d just given up a goal to let the game be tied with 0:01 on the clock. Can’t decide if this is the best way to win or the dumbest way to lose.

Hah. Both?

What a save.

I bought it on PC August of 2015. It did not run well on my GPU (AMD 6670) and I refunded same day.

I upgraded to an nVidia GTX 970 in January 2016 and re-bought it a week later.

Closing in on 1900 hours and I can truly say Rocket League is my new 'cruel mistress'. At least I don't have to pay Blizzard $15/month for the pleasure.
