Rocket League Catch All

I don't think that it will take away your max achieved rank for the season Disco. They take away the rank so people don't get grand master and then stop playing so that better players take it away from them.

Yeah, I think last time you got the rewards for the highest rank you received in the season, not what rank you ended the season at.

That's clever of them.

I had a doozy of a 2v2 competitive match last night. I saved a copy just to be sure it happened the way I thought it did.

They scored within the first 30 seconds, partially due to me accidentally bumping my teammate going for the ball near our goal. "That ones on you teammate" was the message. Sure, no problem. Next kickoff, he's in closer position but doesn't go for the faceoff, and I can't block their kick. Swearing, etc - apparently my fault too. I don't have time to write anything in reply. They score again a minute or two later when I'm forward and he isn't far enough back for defense. Again, I suck. Huh? A minute or so later in the match, they score again - I forget how - and he explodes. "I'm reporting you" among other things, and then quits the match. Reporting me for what?!? I end up scoring after he leaves, and finish with a respectable (for me) 300+ points. No grief from the other team to me at all. I'm definitely not a good player, but that was far from my worst match...

I'm very curious to know what happens to those reports - do you think they review ALL of them? Or just when a person gets maybe 5 or 10 reports?

Peeps, the mute button is like right there.
It's fantastic.

The reports only send the chat contents to Psyonix. I don't think actions in game itself get reviewed, and even if they did you would have to be doing blatant stuff like flipping on your head and spinning or taking shots at your own net (repeatedly). They really are looking for people that are being toxic, so him reporting you will just put his chat comments into the spot light.

Psyonix is a small company. Those reports are a placebo. Ain't nobody reviewing anything. Maybe if someone gets like a million reports.

I haven't used mute yet because I've got a thick enough skin that I don't really care what they say - plus it helps that I know I really do kinda suck most days. This was just the worst example I have seen of someone reacting totally out of left field.

If I see racist/sexist comments, I'll use the report feature myself - so it's bummer if they really aren't doing anything with those more than a couple times a year...

I like to think if people are spamming racist or sexist comments in chat, that life will kick them in the ass soon enough. I do report blatant abuses like that though.

I've been having a bad couple of nights. I keep whiffing, and had more than a few accidental moves where I centered the the ball for the other team leading to a score and a few thousand "nice pass" quick chat spams from the person who scored, that sort of thing. It didn't help that I'm constantly wildly overmatched, and when I wasn't overmatched I was saddled with teammates who were constantly and deliberately self-scoring.

I think I'm hitting that part in a multiplayer game where I remember why I don't play multiplayer games. I'm not improving as fast as the game ranking system thinks I am, so I'm stuck in this phase where I can't learn to improve because everyone around me is so far out of my league that I can barely touch the ball.

At this rate I'll never get good enough to do anything but spectate on bottle rockets nights. Maybe I'll try to do color commentary instead of dragging my team down.

push through. do training to focus on specific skills. we've all had bad nights/weeks. I think I lost 20 in a row at one point.

I'm definitely in the same boat. I've been playing for way too long to be as bad at this as I am - but I also understand that quick reactions are a big plus in this game - and that is not a skill I will ever have... What about finding someone to regularly pair with? Someone that seems to be about the same level as you. At least that way you eliminate the lack of progress variable that is due to randos...

Is there a free-play mode where I can just tool around and kick the ball? My main problem seems to be an inability to judge the trajectory of the ball-- which is pretty much exactly why I don't play real sports. I can't seem to position myself on the fly.

Maybe if I could just kick the ball around without having to worry about a timer or a half dozen other people trying to stop me I could learn something.

The thing that originally took me from flailing around constantly to decent was doing the beginner aerial training a bunch of times. After that, it's just a matter of knowing when to rotate and where to position yourself. Positioning and understanding of where to be and when is much more important in this game than quick reflexes and you can be just as good with that style. It's like playing Heavy in TF2 vs playing Scout.

There are topics on reddit where people are crying about getting banned. So it does happen at some point.

Not nearly often enough based on some of the assholes I've seen though.

I only play casual online - but one of the things that helped me a little was changing my camera to 120 FoV as well as changing my controller's dead zone from .30 to .10 - I still can't fly though

I felt the large FoV (I thought it capped at 110) caused stuff to get skewed such that it was harder to adjust to hitting the ball. I put mine at 94 which is slightly higher then the default. My trick was to set the camera to be further back so I can see all around my car. I also moved the camera up so I can see a bit more of the field.

Maybe I'm just used to it now But the dead zone thing is somewhat new - and I do feel that helps. Means there is less lag between moving the stick and the car moving. Granted .20 change is probably not much in the grand scheme of things, so for me it is more likely a placebo effect.

I've gone through phases of adjusting my camera settings. I'll find something I like, use it for a good while, then change and make an instant improvement at a specific thing (dribbling, striking accurately, wall accuracy, etc), then I'll play that way for a while and change them again, aiming to improve another facet of the game. It's really probably bad for my consistency, but it seems to help work on specific things, so I keep doing it.

Highly recommend just sticking with the same settings. So much of this game at the high level is muscle memory.

Toggling ball cam on/off should be enough to make you able to do all of those techniques as well as you can.

Oh, I know. I. Just. Can't. Stop.

And I do pretty okay, generally. Spikeout may disagree. He's the frequent victim of my inconsistencies. Maybe HBIII as well.

It's usually when you come over from a prolonged period of playing on the PC or you just haven't played in general that it takes a while to shake off the rust.

I'm keeping with my camera settings, I think I used one of the top players (like Kronovi) settings & it's worked brilliant ever since.

I find I like my view a little higher than they do. So I end up messing with the general height of the camera, or the angle of the camera relative to the car. I notice most of the pros use 3-5 on those settings and I keep ending up at like a 12. Maybe I'll try some of their specific settings again. I want to play like Kuxir, so maybe I'll look at his. (Hah! Not likely).

My problem is, I play best close in, but the ball blocks my view so I never know when the other team is taking a run at the ball. I zoom out and play well enough, but my precision suffers terribly and I miss easy shots, miss when I'm trying to make saves at top speed, and miss by scooting UNDER the ball a lot. At least then I have field awareness, though.

Ah well. (Also, your quad post in the goty thread was amazing, Spikeout).

I hadn't thought about it before, but why couldn't they assign a button that zooms in either until you let it go or press it again? I think that could be useful...

Is it me or has there been a lot of lag lately? The last couple of times I've played the ball seems to bounce off of nothing when I'm close to it, and I keep not getting boosts that I clearly ran over.

In other news, I had a more productive session last night. Scored a few bicycle kick goals, which is no mean feat with four wheels. I did well enough that I decided to store a couple of replays just to review later.

Stepping away for a week seems to have improved my game a little.

Despite the rust, I find this is often the case.

And congrats on the good session!

I am the worst player: confirmed!

Unlikely, though I haven't had the pleasure. How many bad players have techniques named after them? Few, I believe. Of course, there's the Mendoza line, but that's a poor example.

Every time I reference the Mendoza Line, I get blank stares. The world is full of heathens.
